Why Newbie Collectors Need to Stop Doing This and Start Doing Research Instead!

It's a harsh reality but it needs to be said. Not enough newbie collectors are doing the proper and well needed research into what they are looking to get. As a collector, it is important to use logic to make purchasing decisions and not just buy something based off of emotion. By doing more research, you will limit the amount of mistakes you make which could be costly and set you back some. You will probably have a better experience collecting and have a larger collection over time. Research and the gathering of information is very important, so stop posting in Facebook groups about your new acquisition you have no idea about and start doing your own research!

Exactly, I was at a gunshow this fall and a table had a fake 1903a4, obviously just an 03a3 someone added a reproduction scope and mount. Price listed $4500, I overheard a customer offer $4000 since its missing the front sight, the seller then told him that it was converted in the field to an a4 and the marines didnt like seeing the front sight in the scope so they removed it, thats why the finish was marred where the front sight used to be, this also proved the marines used in the pacific, lol.The seller countered with $4250 and then the guy handed over the money and walked away with his new rifle. Not even joking, I couldnt believe how someone could drop so much money on a rifle without even knowing anything about it. Firstly the markings are different on a real a4, offset so they can be read around the scope mount, no a4s were ever converted in the field, and they never had a front sight so the cut should be there with no finish wear. Sadly it seems like many people have more money than brains.

@GenerationKill001 not a bad price as long as the scope mount was done up right. It sounds like it was! I really hate to see people do the conversion ruining an original 1903a3, but I certainly respect those who either take sporters or drill recievers and make an 03a4 for themselves, not passing it as the real thing. Rather have an 04gery than a bubbad sporter

This video has enlightened me a little bit since I've been looking into getting into the surplus market for a while now. I've passed up on some solid deals, but I've been trying to get to the point where I can put the money together and get enough research done to make a solid decision. I do have a couple of gun shops that I go to that are actually quite opposite in what they offer. One store offers stuff at a reasonable price, but you have to really look the stuff over and the condition of some of the weapons are not great. The other place had higher prices, but they only carry weapons that are at least in good to mint condition. I also go to gun shows and the smaller ones don't really have too much anymore in surplus, but larger shows should still be solid.

I went to a gun shop just yesterday known for stocking milsurp and found two different guns I haggled over. A M91/24 that looks pristine (and I mean there's not a single flaw with the stock nor a spec of rust I could find) and has a good bore, extractor, and rifling for $400. Hell she even has the original cleaning rod. Similar to what I'd get on an RTI hand pick ($349 + 50). Same dude was trying to sell me a $800 Enfield with way more pitting and way more wear than the Italian pasta rod, not to mention the absolute state of the rifling. I feel like if you just knew a bit about guns in general $800 for something with bad rifling and a bad bore would be an obvious ripoff regardless of the name or furniture. Needless to say, I walked out with the Carcano, my first one. Buying the ammo will be a pain in the ass, but it was objectively the better deal.

I hate the posts on reddit or other forums titled "How'd I do?" or something similar. Half the time the guns aren't even what they thought they bought and the other half the guns are in such poor condition that they aren't worth half of what they paid. I was a newbie collector once, I got slightly shafted on a 6 digit Winchester M1 I bought for probably too much for the condition that it was in. But that taught me to always research what I'm looking at. Even if it means pulling out my phone right in front of the seller at a gun show to double check a price or variant of a gun.

Some people don't want to research and just want instant gratification. I was always told: 'buy the gun, buy the book'. Not many people will take the time to read the books anymore. To me its some of the best part. I still have to chuckle at all the 'What do I have here" posts. Good video as its a reminder to more seasoned collectors as well that there is ALWAYS something new to learn. Be well.

Was at MB Defense earlier and one of the employees brought in his old Combloc stuff to sell. Brought in a Baikal IJ-70 Makarov with the original box, manual, 3 mags, and the cleaning tool imported in 1991. I decided to put the money down on it because it was $800 tax included and I couldn’t find a similar one online for much cheaper, plus it’s supporting a local business. I know he also brought in a Polish Makarov and a TT-33 clone. Last time I went in, he brought his Yugo SKS, so that was cool to see, said he’s gonna try for $700.

Well, supply and demand. Doesn't always mean the people demanding something are the brightest but due to all of the import restrictions from countries that do still have loads of surplus things will be impossible to change. Instead of infighting we need to push local federal representatives to repeal the import bans from China and Russia so everyone can get their old garbage rod Mosin or SKS to Bubbify.

I started collecting mil surps years ago, back in the 1980s. I researched and read everything, I could, as there was no internet back then. "Guns and Ammo" put out an annual called, "Surplus Firearms", edited by Garry James, and I read everything I could, plus, studied books on different types of Firearms, military antiques, etc. I think that it was my father and other World War 2 veterans got me hooked on it, unknowingly. Plus, all those movies, we watched years ago. My dad brought home a captured P-38, including holster, magazines and a cleaning tool, and he showed it to me one time. That, and the fact that things were cheaper back then, got me hooked. But, before I went out and bought, I read. That collection is long gone, unfortunately. But, I would still use what I know, before buying anything .. Knowledge is always better. Know, before you go.

People always use the saying that an item is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. But it seems to me that internet sales has created two separate markets. Lets say the typical price of a gun is $400 but someone lists it for sale at $800. Maybe 1 in 1000 people would pay that ridiculously overpriced amount. If a local gun shop listed it for that price it would take them 6 months for enough people to visit their shop to find that 1 in a 1000 buyer. Since they want to move product and not have it sit on the shelf a store would drop the price to a normal amount long before that. But it someplace like Gunbroker lists the gun they could have thousands of views per day so its easy to find that person who is uneducated about prices or is wealthy enough to not care. And then people see that sale and think it represents the market price.

Meh people rarely do their due diligence. But let's face it; you have a lot of people early in their cycle. You see something, it very well NOT be there tomorrow and you've already drove aways to get there. You get the sweats and buy it. You scarcely knew what it was to googlefu it outside on your phone to gauge the price from a 5yr old listing on armsamerica, or wildly inflated prices on gb. You bring it home anyway, and you realize you came home with another impulse buy. You had a suspicion and it turns out correct- its a Vetterli, but sweet mercy, WHICH vetterli is it? You start to sweat more as your googling points you to a swiss carbine. After 2.1hrs of frantic googling you post it to reddit. You've got a vetterli carbine alright, one that bubba got ahold of. You're ripped publicly, and you just blew a fat stack on a wall hanger. You live, you learn, and you do better next time. Its the second evolution stage of the collector. I dunno how much this universally drives up costs though.

The thing with rock island auction and many other auctions both online and in person is that you have to remember the fees they charge the buyer. 5-20% buyers premium/buyers fee, sales taxes, shipping and handling if can’t pickup in person. A gun bought for $500 bid can end up costing $600-$700 to get it.

An odd video... A lot of good advice in here; but... I'd argue that - compared to how it was in the early 2000's - if you know what you're looking for, and your not independently wealthy, and you have a real life and can't go to gunshops every day, and you don't have your own FFL or C&R and so you can't order directly from websites and have it shipped to your front door, it's not always better to pass on something you have really been looking for, even if it's a little over-priced. Not saying to pay gun show prices. Gun shows are a racket anymore. But a lot of times, shops don't know what they have; or they over paid, themselves, to get what they have. So as long as you know what you're getting into, sometimes you have to spring on those guns which you only find in the local shops once every 2 to 3 years, and not wait, assuming that prices will come down on that particular surplus rifle...maybe...if you ever see one again...

Well…it takes two to tango. Gun forum members need to be very cognizant of how they treat “new posters”. We’ve all seen it. Dog piling some kid because he isn’t in the cool club is a surefire way to contribute to this problem. A group that prides itself on informed minutiae should not reward members who okay the gotcha game at the expense of the naive.

Right, there are group/ forum rules about harassment and just depends on how much the admins want to enforce them. I’ve seen forum posts going back to the early 2000s where people just got something and posted asking about it instead of doing a bit of research (which was somewhat harder back then). Really, I’ve just seen more and more “don’t know what I got, tell me about it” posts as of recent years as well seeing them pay silly high prices for it.

@@BattlefieldCurator 1. Everybody starts from somewhere. Including asking for help. 2. Your response even assumes a certain level of knowledge from the unknowing: needing research. For all they know, and assume, every one of “X gun” has a simple answer and are all the same. Educate, don’t excoriate for what they don’t know. They probably did some basic level of research to find the very forums to begin with. 3. The barrier for entry into “whatever model gun” collecting club is pretty low: buying something. It’s not a skills based endeavor. A new guy teeing up an obvious question is really just him making an attempt at fraternity and friendship. What he really is looking for is a mentor and old hand to show him around the joint. Far too often he is meet with derision and ridicule for not knowing the secret handshake or even obliquely blamed for ruining the club atmosphere by his mere existence. 4. Our advice for close to 15 years about gun forums is thus: get in and get whatever information you are looking for. Serial numbers, dates, etc. Then get out. The longer someone dilly-dallys in there, the greater the chances a regular is going to try to cut your head off for clout. Regards, Marky John1911 dot com

Not all CMP rifles are junk… A. CMP Special M1 Garands are the only ones that are totally refurbished. B. Many other M1 Garands are put together with surplus parts to make rack and field grades C. M1 Garands that were returns from other countries are inspected and if serviceable, they are put on the racks in the stores in field, service, and expert grades. Some are even auctioned if they are that nice. D. Returns such as M1 Garands, Krag Jorgensen, M1903s, M1903A3s, and M1917s from veterans organizations are usually kept as is, if serviceable. E. Many rifles won’t have all original matching parts because the U.S. military would upgrade and repair them in the armories throughout the years. I’ve seen pretty good looking M1 Garands from veteran’s organizations, Turkey, and Denmark. Phillipine return M1 Garands can be pretty rough though.
