I use new penns, old penns and Newell's for surfcasting and I like all of them

They are both good reels...Newell is a great choice for beginners as well as advanced.

I still own a Newell 550 here on Guam and Very rarely did I service it but it still cast like a dream. It makes a little more noise when casting because of my lazy ass but it still does the job. After watching this clip I’m now thinking, should I put it up for sale and get 3-4 newer more modern reels for the price I would sell it? Or keep it and fish the crap out of it till it finally says🙅🏻‍♂️........thoughts?

Bought my Newell P454-F back in 84, when I was living in Orange County. Spooled it with 40 pound test, it was and still is a good reel. I live in Wyoming now, so not much use for it. I should sell it, but just cant bring myself to do it. Its in great shape. Oh and I had it on a 5.5 foot Kunnan Casting rod.

My 540 5.5 drag finally wore out.☹️ Hopefully I can find someone who can fix it. It was my workhorse. I never went on a trip with out it.

These reels dont compare to modern Shimano, Daiwa, and even Penn reels. Its like comparing a 67 Mustang with a Ferrari

Manufacture target, served a purpose, but failed to achieve the next level....cant tell you how many I seen exploded on the west coast.
