He’s hated because he impacts the game being one-dimensional on the other side of the ball. Nobody respected Dwight either. Only “shut-down” defenders like Tony Allen and Jrue Holiday get respect for their defensive impact because you see it so much in the iso. Hell, Shawn Bradley got mad disrespected for always getting dunked on even though he’d be leading in blocks all the time. It’s about aesthetics as much as it is about stats in the modern age.

Basketball asides, Gobert just oozed “French”-ness, making him simply, detestable. Him being one of the most dominant and annoying defender while possessing limited offensive skillset just added tons of fuel to the fire. Players neither want to play with and against him, nor respect and love him. He’s just that type of one in a generation loathsome person, it’s amazing. It’s even more amazing that he has beef with the previous generational loathsome piece of ass, Green. Truly a clash of titans.

Lifelong Timberwolves fan here and I can say that most of us are happy with Rudy and actually respect him I ran into him at a target and dude paid for everyone in store. He's also an elite defender sure I don't think he should've won all those DPOTY awards but he for sure deserved 2 the other ones are fkr sure debateable.

Before watching the video, here’s why I think people disrespect him; 1- He seems to have never worked on improving his offensive game in any way whatsoever. Adding just a few post moves would have been a huge improvement 2- He’s won more DPOY’s than I think he deserves. If he had 2 or something I don’t think people would care as much but when yo have as many as Mutumbo, more than Hakeem, etc it rubs people the wrong way 3- His fault or not he’s been absolutely getting cooked in the playoffs due to his inability to even been serviceable on the perimeter. Bam and AD will get cooked a lot if switched on guards but not nearly to the degree as Rudy. 4- He talks a lot for a guy that is a liability on offense. I think it’s mostly getting cooked in the playoffs tho. A lot of fans don’t watch the regular season so when they see a DPOY getting cooked year after year in the playoffs they just assume he’s a fraud

To follow on, one issue I do see with Gobert is his footwork. While sometimes he does very well, there are a lot of cases where he just doesn't shuffle/slide his feet. This is critical for a big man to switch on the perimeter and stay in front of a smaller, faster player. As a Celtics fan, this was what impressed me the most with KP was how quickly he bought into and started shuffling his feet to stay in front of his opponent. Having tried this myself, I think it's mentally tough because shuffling side-to-side feels a lot slower. However, it gives you a much more stable base to jump, contest and change directions with a smaller, faster player. I also think teams need to use Gobert more like Boston used KP on defense. Boston would sometimes stick KP defending a weaker corner shooter, but sagged off so that he was about halfway to the paint. The key here is that KP didn't commit to the paint too early, he more deterred opponents by the fact that he was in position to help defend at the rim. At the same time, he was positioned to cut of a drive/kick pass and to close out and contest the corner shooter. This takes a lot of practice and discipline, knowing when to finally commit and knowing how to position to cut off the passing lane, but I think Gobert can figure that out. The other issue though is that it relies on the team having good perimeter defenses up top to pick up the opposing ball handler. Boston is spoiled by having White/Holiday, the best (without question) defensive guard tandem in the NBA. They also have two wings that are above average defensively (when they want to be) and all four of Brown/White/Holiday/Tatum can essentially guard positions 1-4. So maybe it wouldn't work without the elite versatility on defense. However, I'd give it a shot with Rudy, the threat of him closing to the paint alone will deter a lot of players.

Nice work on the video. The first thing I knew about him was that.. He had the weird microphone touching thing. Switching on defense usually gets him usually a tough assignment on a prime-time guards late in the game.. boy do those highlights travel. He's a bit quirky and/odd. It would be great if he scored He gets in odd on-court disputes and fights with teammates and non-teammates. He hasn't gone far in the playoffs, that's not only his "fault". I know/see all of that and I'm a casual fan. Finally we hear Shaq talk about him. We hear current players rate him as #5 most overrated and the top center in that category. Gobert is "unlucky" with timing, injuries, who is selected to be on his team, or his coach. It's not his fault that he's not hip or a marketable player. Not having the right mix of all of that can make success harder and it effects a player's perceived greatness or success.

he's just one of the biggest playoff underperformers of all-time. simple as that. the brighter the lights the smaller his game.

Gobert's issue is that it's very hard to win in the playoffs using drop coverage. During the regular season it's fine because teams don't have the time or talent to focus on attacking the drop. In the playoffs, pretty much every team has at least one elite offensive player and they have the time to craft schemes to isolate a poor perimeter defender. Boston did it just this year by targeting Doncic. Doncic did it to Gobert many times. In the playoffs, the offenses are too high powered and talented to play drop coverage on and that's why we see Gobert struggle more in the playoffs.

7’9” wingspan is very good but not great. Kevin McHale had a 8’0” wingspan although he was 6’10” tall. I think Gobert is disrespected a bit too much. Sure he’s not in the same league as Olajuwon, Ben Wallace, Mutombo, Rodman, etc. Gobert is still a very good defender as a big man.
