Working as a human biologist, I think it is also important to note that noise pollution in cities can cause what we call "hidden hearing loss". Although this does often not affect a person's ability to hear quiet noises, hidden hearing loss leads to a poorer perception of noises (caused by a loss of synapses in the ear). As a consequence, it becomes more difficult for us to listen to a person's voice in noisy environments (I talked about this in one of my videos on revolutionary hearing implants). I think it's important to be aware of that!

That _sounds_ like me. I have no problem hearing the faintest of sounds, or distinguish the direction the sound came from, but I often have to ask people to repeat what they've said.

I remember in my childhood, one of the best things, which I now miss, is hearing the birds chirp in the early mornings. I probably didn't even appreciate as much as I should have, but I definitely look back on the occasions fondly. I want my little feathered buddies to come back full force.

So you basically liked hearing birds ask for sex when you woke up. You can use alarms with bird noises connected to a surround system and it will give you the same experience if not better.

Same here! Used to see bright blue kingfishers flying around between trees back in my hometown. Now it'd be rare to even catch a squirrel climbing up the grails

@@alienufoweird Even when you put it like that, I still miss it tremendously. Also, assuming I even have the finances for my own surround system, I don't think I'd go for it anyway. I dunno, but for me it just wouldn't feel genuine. Good idea, though!

I remember going camping in the woods back in 2012, once I got back I couldn't sleep properly for a few weeks because my house felt so damn noisy. We really have a lot of noise and light pollution, which is extremely sad as we really miss out on some amazing things.

I cried coming back home from camping thinking about all of the noise pollution I was coming back to. As I type this the a-hole across the street is revving his motorcycle full on... it hurts my ears. UGH.

People like me with hyperacusis, central nervous system dysfunctions and/or dysautonomia really feel those effects. It was only after moving to the middle of nowhere in a forest that hyperacusis finally started getting better than when we lived in a busy intersection. We couldn't believe the calm was tiring me so much and I only ever feel that same feeling when we have a contractor work on the house now. Those noisy episodes remind me why we made the right choice. I cannot comprehend how animals with even more acute hearing can handle it. Also see Healthcare Triage's sleep at hospital episode!

@@michaelesposito2629They are loud enough that many people here feel the need to wear earplugs. Just like many people feel the need to wear earplugs when working with heavy equipment and machinery. One more thing. deaf·en·ing adjective (of a noise) so loud as to make it impossible to hear anything else. (AKA does not cause deafness)

My favourite times are when the power is out. I live in the country, there's no traffic noise, and without the constant hum of the appliances running, fans, and the air pump, it's truly silent. My family wondered why I always had earbuds on as a kid, even with nothing playing on my mp3 player or walkman. The earbuds muffled the ambient sounds. I still wear earbuds with nothing playing sometimes if the din of life is too much. Maybe I have an undiagnosed sensory processing issue, but even just the background, normal house noise can bother me.

I've experienced what it sounds like without all of that noise before (especially cars) and was surprised at how wonderful and peaceful it was. It made me feel much more at peace and made me jealous of the way people used to live.

While I agree that noise pollution such as loud cars is a problem for other animals, the opposite problem tends to arise in rural areas for a certain subset of people. Sometimes it is too quiet. Let me explain. For context, I am legally blind so I can't drive. This is a problem because public transportation is basically nonexistent in my town. That means if you can't drive you have to either find someone else to drive you or you have to walk. Where I live it is winter for about half of the year and it is often windy. When it gets windy, the sound of the wind can get louder than almost any of the vehicles on the road. It can be dangerous to walk around in certain parts of our town if you can't see properly because some of the cars are too quiet and get drowned out by ambient background noise. Our town and similar toens would benefit from cars that were louder and from fewer cars such as priuses.

@@alexandertownsend3291 I mean, isn't it better if we raised awareness about issues like that and made better technology to alert the blind and deaf about things like that, rather than making our environment insufferable? Noise pollution also affects hearing and creates stress, which leads to all sorts of problems, and it also makes communication difficult, which leads to other safety issues and general unpleasantness. I say it's about time technology advanced more as far as things like you mentioned go, it doesn't even sounds like something that should be a problem to achieve nowadays. All sort of things have been popping up in recent years and I'm guessing it's about to improve. Working on a more quiet environment will probably take longer than creating solutions for things like that, so I think we should keep working on both.

It's maddening, especially when one lives in apartments and share inner walls with the offenders. It shakes the entire building; walls, floors, cabinets, oven, windows, teeth and eyeballs ! And the only reason for it IS to annoy. It's hard to believe the government bothered passing a Noise Act only to completely fail to enforce it later. Shipping and energy extraction are extremely loud. A lot of ships muffle the exhaust noise under water as well as use sea water to cool the engine which has to generate a lot of frequencies and a high decibel level. Propellers also generate noise, especially when cavitation happens. Drilling oil/gas wells as well as pumps are extremely loud and you can hear them for miles in the open air and I can't imagine what it would be like underwater. It will be a slow process but noise emissions need to be more regulated in all fields (land, air, and sea).

I don't think it was a euphemism for pooping. I think he genuinely meant they were relieved from stress which is why there was less stress hormones. I think it was literal. They actually let out a sigh of relief of stress, therefore there was less stress hormone when they pooped later.

Also affects on a human level those prone to sensory overload... such as people with autism, PTSD, anxiety, and Sensory processing disorder. I deal with PTSD, and sometimes it's really hard to go outside and function because of the sheer amount of sound. I try headphones, but constantly get a message about how it's going to damage my hearing if I try to drown out the sounds bugging me.

it is very effective. our car park is about 50% electric or hybrid. there is a huge difference in sound pollution. only good thing about the electric cars. far more calm environment

When I was in the Navy I remember we had to keep a 24 hour whale watch up when we were off the coast of Alaska. Every time a whale was spotted we had to turn off our sonar and depending on how close they were, we'd limit engine noise. I just remember we used to have to turn the sonar off and limit noise quite a lot. However it made for spectacular whale sightings!

Had to watch out for them by Australia too. Very majestic, but a bit too curious for their own good. Was always afraid we would hit one because they would come really close. Never really worried about dolphins though, those guys could swim circles around us

Here in Adelaide, South Australia, there are a group of dolphins called "Port River Dolphins" (because they live in the Port River) who speak a special dolphin dialect designed to be distinguishable over the noise of the river traffic.

I grew up in a pretty rural area, very quiet most of the time. A few years back I moved into an apartment that was yards from a 4 lane road with cars going by nearly 24/7. I still haven't gotten used to the noise of the traffic and sometimes I feel like it makes me a little bit crazy. Unfortunately, this place has the cheapest rent around so I feel like I'm in a cage.

I love the birds and the squirrels that come to feed in my yard. This year, they have all disappeared. It took me awhile to connect the dots, but I realized that the new commercial grow that moved in across the street this year, starts up a generator every morning and it runs until sundown. I find it unpleasant. Apparently the wildlife find it unbearable. All the things that drew me to this area are now gone; the trees, the quiet, the wildlife, and the fresh air. All gone. Big sigh.

@@Thumbsupurbum Really? I didn't know that. What are your sources? Where did you get that? Part of the reasons why I love electrics, is their stealth. But if there is a loud frequency they make, that can be heard by something, then I want to know that, so can tune or muffle it out. When leaving for work, going on a road trip, or returning home, I don't want to wake up or disturb people, OR animals. I don't want to be an a55hole, or draw unnecessary attention. I love riding overnight, and I hate my engine noise. I'm saving to convert to lithium batteries & ultra-capacitors. And I hope solid-state, or better battery chemestries, become available to the homemade BEV world. Where did you learn about motor sound frequencies?

@@observingrogue7652 My source was just the fact that my dogs ears will perk up whenever my neighbor(who has an electric vehicle) pulls out of his driveway. Even though I don't hear anything. But I did a little digging and found a couple of studies about noise levels of electric vehicles. None were specifically about animals, rather were about human. But the high frequency noise is mentioned and discussed. Here is a paragraph from a the study(link below). "The results show that sounds 6 and 7 with 12dB amplification on the high frequency components were identified as worse than the baseline sound. Listeners commented that these sounds were similar to the sound of a dog whistle or had very high tonal frequencies almost at the limit of hearing. This is perhaps not unexpected with such high amplification on the tonal components but shows that these very high frequency components contribute to sound quality. By comparison sound 5 with +6dB on the 8054Hz tone was rated as average with high confidence intervals indicating that not all listeners could not identify this change as clearly different to the baseline. In comparison, sound 8 that had all clear high frequency tones removed was rated as slightly improved over the baseline sound with a smaller confidence interval. @@Thumbsupurbum Ok. Thank you. And I'm well aware that electric vehicles do make noise. And I'm not talking about the government mandated, low speed artificial noise, for the blind and stupid jaywalkers to hear them coming. I mean fluid turbulence of moving parts, tire rolling noise, mechanical noises like barings & gears, and the natural electro-magnetic noises...What worries me is, are the motors, gears, and barings, making a loud, disturbing, far reaching noise, that I can't hear, because it's out of my frequency range.

@Evi1M4chine So what your're saying is, I shouldn't bother surrounding the motors & transmission, with sound dampening material? Even at full "throttle", if the sound is comfortable for me, then the sounds will have little to no effect on nature, that's 3 or 4 meters from my electric motorcycle? I grew up with Tunercar culture, like turning economy & sports cars, into homemade racecars. Turbokits, superchargers, antilag, exhaust crackles & pops, and little to no mufflers & resonators, or a refined exhaust sound to live with.....But now I'm getting used to the sound of electric motors, and I found, my favorite sound, is the haunting echo of 2 motors working together, instead of 1 big motor. I would like to hear that sound, and was considering doing what Yamaha & Lexus did with the LFA. To my understanding, they used musical instrument techniques, to fine-tune how sound from the engine, reaches the driver. I want to do something like that, with my homemade electric motorcycles, where I can pleasantly hear the sounds of the dual motors, and maybe the straight cut transmission gears, while those sounds are dampened to everyone & everything else. What volumes and sounds, would you personally define as trivial? If an electric vehicle can make a dogs ears perk up, then I call that a disturbance. And I worry about what other animal will notice, and stop whatever they are doing. If an animal sees me fly by, that's one thing. But if an animal is tucked away somewhere nearby, trying to mate or sleep. Then I don't want to cock-block or stress-out that animal...I'm anti-vegan, but amazingly, I care a lot about this.

As an autistic person who is highly sensitive to noise, this is so resonant to me! Lots of my family and friends are so noisy, but above moderately quiet things physically hurt my ears. While this isn’t as dangerous as dying wildlife, it seriously affects a person’s quality of life! I also have problems discerning noises, so speech is difficult to understand, and listening to a person talk is hard because I can also hear the birds outside, the traffic outside, next door, the tv, my chinchillas, the clock ticking and the neighbours chatting outside all at the same time. So trying to listen to one sound at a time is hard! Good news is despite some mild tinnitus my hearing is way more sensitive than average, so like the common pet dog I know when the post is arriving and how long until the take away dinner arrives 😅🤣

@@terryenby2304 I don't like ear plugs either. I've been wanting to get ear defenders. Do they limit your ability to navigate? I know when I get rid of my ability to hear to some degree it also gets rid of my ability to "see" most things around me or know if I'm breathing so I breathe louder

I'm in agreeance with the birds on this; I purposefully avoid high-noise environments. I don't go to clubs, I don't go to the cinema, I don't go to live events, period. I, on occasion, will go out to eat somewhere I know will be mostly quiet. Going out is something I avoid, if possible (98.5% of my shopping is done online). I'm incredibly thankful for the internet for allowing me the ability to avoid all the noise (& smells). I'm much more relaxed & happier now.

I’d love it to be less quite. I often use noise cancelling headphone when i go outside in the park during my lunch break. Not to listen to something, but because it’s more peaceful that way. It’s always surprising how much noise there is when i take them off

I live next to the Palo duro canyon in Texas and it’s the only place I’ve gone that is truly quiet. In winter the only thing you can hear is the wind blowing through the canyon and it’s absolutely beautiful.

I found a great solution for those of us living in a noisy area: HEARING PROTECTION EARMUFFS. I got the the 3M Peltor X5A for $23 a few weeks ago and it's been a life-changer. The noise from traffic outside my window is completely gone. I can study in peace. I can't even hear my spouse clanking dishes in the kitchen. It's great! I've owned Bose noise cancelling headphones. They're good, but nowhere near as good as those passive earmuffs. The earmuffs are much bigger than headphones, and I look like a dork while I wear them, but I don't care; I'm so happy to have some quiet when I read. Also, there's no need to charge them!

We had really bad snow 2 years ago (I live in a country not equipped to deal with it). Roads were shut, not a car in sight. I was living in the middle of a large city. Only then did I realise how much I loathe the sound of traffic. Cars completely ruin the place we live. Wish more people commutes by bicycle.

Never mind the animals, we are all annoyed by the noise. I notice it in many ways. When I'm back at my parents house out in a smaller town, I get significantly less stressed than I do in the city. When I go outside and want to hear music, I have to set the volume to around 75dB, which is really bad for my hearing. Inside I can get away with much less - as much as 25dB less. New innovations are allowing us to cut down in this insane noise somewhat, such as electric cars. Unfortunately the lawmakers are out in force, telling car manufacturers to add noise-producing speakers to them so that people realise they're there because they're playing loud music?! Is like a race of who can scream the loudest at this point. I'm going to go ahead and get some quiet now.

Depression as we know it basically started with the advent of motorised vehicles. In the UK when we removed a day of rest and quiet, mental health declined and it has essentially been annihilated (1 in 3 mentally ill and rising) with the introduction of reversing bleeping alarms on vehicles which pervade our entire environment.

I recently moved to a new city and am now living pretty much in the center of that city. Of course even at night some cars travel the roads but those are few. But it is pretty light outside. So it happens from time to time that I am awakened by song birds in the middle of the night. They sing at 1 a.m., they sing at 2 a.m., they basically sing all night long. I think it might be because, yes, there is a whole lot of artificial lights around but maybe also because of the noise pollution at daytime when they don't hear each other.

Particularly from submarines, since they have no other way of figuring out where they are. At least most ships use passive sonar rather than active unless there's a reason, and most vessels these days have masker/prarie air to lessen the noise coming from machinery and propellers. Still, sonar is especially harmful since subs and sub-hunting ships tend to hang out where whales do

I moved near a city because all my friends are here. My quality of sleep is abysmal now, I get on average 4-6 hours of sleep. I have to always have white noise playing when I go to sleep to drown out sirens and the incredibly loud vents in my crappy apartment. I really want to move far away from the city.

I think it's funny how people associate birdsong with attracting a mate; Yet, I"m pretty sure most songbirds are establishing territory boundaries, like...The whole mocking bird's multitude of songs is...to ward off as many OTHER birds as possible! no doubt, the fewer birds in the area, the more overall foods available, and unclaimed. I mean. the territory establishment is centered around attracting mates, but...I guess it's not as simple as just a come hither.

It's a less important aspect of this but I wonder if the specific pitches of said noise also have an effect - on wildlife or on people. I consider myself to be a little bit unusual in that I hear background noises and really notice them, all the time; it's possible for me to tune it out but I have to concentrate. And often times, with very little effort, I can determine the pitch of, say, an AC hum. But that also means that in some situations there are clashing sounds, like hearing one machine hum as D-flat but another one, at the same perceived volume, in C... So it makes me wonder a little bit if the dissonances as much as the sheer amplitude being created that affects us, or critters. We already know there are certain sounds and certain pitches that are more or less soothing - like a cat's purring. So is the opposite also true?

Yes,infrasonic sound is an interesting aspect of sound. Also the texture of the sound,pulsing droning,thumping noise etc. It doesnt have to be loud to be intensly irritating.

You missed the opportunity to mention the sound test at the bottom of the Mariana Trench a couple of years ago, where not only did they record the Earth "breathing" (The sounds of the Earth changing shape in response to the tides.) but also storm waves hitting the shore in South America, and traffic noise from the US east coast. In the BOTTOM of the world's deepest ocean trench.

as someone whose job was audio, (ret'd) I was (and still am) VERY aware of noise, both in and outside: for me, being in a big city is, aurally, almost painful, and when the emergency vehicles go by, is painful... and then there is tinnitus...it's there all the time from the womb, I would imagine till death...

This is even more reason for people to switch to electric vehicles or use non-motorized forms of transit. Also, since tolerance varies amongst species, one way researchers could figure out the ideal noise level is to survey the types of wildlife in a geographic radius. For the most abundant, most ecologically important wildlife, find out what is the safe threshold level of ambient human generated noise. Aim to reduce noise levels to that level. Landscaping got real noisy beginning 40 years ago, gasoline powered equipment replaced rakes, brooms and trimmers. Now rechargeable battery equipment is bringing the noise levels down, at least for the DIY home owner.

for those who care about environment, switch to e scooters folks. i have one and they are so much effective in reducing noise pollution. it's price is same as the usual scooters which run on petrol. this is a small step we all can do towards reducing noise pollution

I live in an apartment thats poorly isolated. Ive had some pretty noisy neighbors over the years, and its life affecting. You'll get really exhausted and stressed out. Excessive noise is not good. Also, what about people with autism? Hearing loss? Stress? Inability to focus as a result of noise? This is a big deal to a lot of people

One more problem: the frequency profile of the noise. Noise might be very broad, and the composing sound frequencies, including the ones that our human ear cannot hear, might have different effects depending on the noise source and the species under study.

I've been arguing for moving the entire population of the USA to the east side of the Mississippi River and allowing the western half to become the world's largest nature preserve where the only people allowed are scientists with legitimate studies and natives who still wish to live in their traditional ways. Now I have another reason to add to the list of reasons we should do this.

This is what I know--my biggest motivator for moving was to get away from my upstairs neighbor walking around in the middle of the night. I moved outside of the city just so I could have a quiet bedroom and could get better sleep. Had to renovate a house and now commute an extra 20 minutes to work...but it's been worth it.

The first minute of the video the sound kept skipping, and cutting of the end of Michaels sentences, but i thought it was just a bit becouse the video is about noisepollution and how it can effect on the hearing ... but when noone else had commented about it in the comments I became suspicious and started the video over ... this time with no skipping audio .. turns out it was just my tv buffering slightly when changing the quality of the video

Howd the frogs manage. I've been stuck next to builders a relative has builders next to them doing my favourite hamnering but it's not a digger dropping stones into a skip. This noise has led to pxxg due to headaches. Im in a bad mood for weeks spend hours running as I can't listen to it. I have a lower tolerance to all noise now. Complained the builders as they changed their schedule so I couldn't leave. Weeks of this seems to make one irritable nothing can cheer me up and I'm researching places I can safely rent in the country during covid 19.

My AC is really loud and when all my neighbors run theirs too it's really hot as well as loud in the breezeway. I have to turn on CCs as well as raise the TV volume. It drives me nuts. W/o AC my TV is on volume 15 w/ AC I have to turn it up to the 40s.

i think we need to redefine what a national park can be. Like right now there's just parks and not-parks. How about areas were people are allowed to live and farm, but there are certain rules in place to protect the environment such as noise allowances, and bans on other things that bother wild life like pesticides, excessive light, etc.
