Poor staffing is the number 1 reason why nurses quit. The patients are the least trouble. It's the staffing issues. And believe me, COVID-19 lockdowns has nothing to do with it. This has been a problem for years in the heathcare industry.

For me, it's the lack of timely staff, no communication, and no care on the end of the facility that makes me not go back or take a break from going there. Usually, the residents are no problem.

LTC it's horrible. I got my CNA in the summer started working LTC before I finish classes. I stayed for 4 months before I went agency. Too many no-shows. One CNA might show up for a whole facility or two. Sometimes you wouldn't even have LVN show up. Then the RN supervisor will reluctantly come past medicine. No help, no supplies, roaches, etc. They just don't care. I had to leave and I've been happy ever since I went agency can I try to stick to rehab centers and no long-term care

I have held an LPN in four states since 1985. Mostly agency assignments. Here is my observation of what has changed. Essentially, nothing. We now have PCC instead of paper charting. In most PCC programs that I have used, the redundancy is mind-boggling. Instead of writing the same info in five different places in the chart, we now navigate to five different pages to type in the same info, instead of the program cross populating the data across the different pages. My motto for the nursing industry is as follows: Why make things easy when we can make things difficult.

@@johnberry2877 True. And yeah almost every home in my area has on average up to 40 residents for one nurse. Same stories being told by staff from 3 different counties so kind of hard to run from it. I do agree nurses need to refusing assignments like that and push back to make a change. These nursing homes abuse their staff and then wonder why they have a high turn over and can’t keep anyone.

Have you heard of respiratory therapist? Maybe look into that career. The money is GREAT and they’re primarily in Hospitals. I’m a LVN and the pay sucks! If you want to be a LVN then yes, you’d make a little more than a CNA but not enough. IF you want to become financially thriving then I say go for your RN license!!!! The program won’t be easy but the opportunities and pay is out of this world!!! I work at a clinic and the RNs at my job make almost $100/hr and BARELY doing anything 🤦🏾‍♀️. SMH. I do far more than them as a LVN ! Smdh! I don’t know why it’s such a huge pay gap between LVNs and RNs. Smh

I worked at a facility for 7 years too long as a CNA. They were offering me a staffing job for the CNAs. I work Monday through Friday and whoever calls in I have to go in if I couldn't find anybody to cover. Also had to make sure all units were covered. And we had stubborn CNAs that would not work with this unit or that they're staying on the floor where they want. Anyway they're trying to push all that responsibility on me without any extra pay. They weren't going to pay me anything for all that responsibility. I turned it down. Somebody else took the job and she's having to work all the damn time. The other day she thought she's going to get to go home but somebody called in last minute and she ended up having to stay. She's totally regretting this. Sigh.

Not to sound naive, even though I am, but what happens if you say you don't want to accept the assignment because of the ratios? Do you just go home before you clock in if they don't have help (which they won't)? Then never go back and/or get dropped from your agency? I know LTC ratios can go higher than 30:1, but I'm just curious what would happen if you say I'm good irl?

Seems like the staffing coordinator wanted you to do her dirty work since you are agency. I’ve seen this so many times. Idk y facilities main staff hate on agency staff when they come. I welcome y’all with open arms cause y’all cone in do your contract and be out. I work at a hospital and agency gets the worst assignment and even over heard a nurse tell a charge nurse to give an agency nurse all the critical patients cause she was making more than regular staff. It’s a mess. I’m a respiratory therapist so it wasn’t anything I could do cause we got our issues. I’m just like, lemme do my 12 hours and go hone.

I wonder if this is common on the East coast. I never heard of a CMT. The LPN is the only person that gives meds in New York. You would work alone in the evening shift and night shift. I have seen some LPN nurses work alone in the day shift 35 to 40 patients on geriatric floors.

I’m in St. Louis MO. I’ve heard that CMT don’t exist in other states, for example IL is right next to MO and nurses even commute from IL to STL to work and IL doesn’t have CMTs

That’s why I quit working in the nursing homes it’s toxic. I really wouldn’t mind doing home health. Plus a lot of CNA’s called out plus I’m not working with 10 plus patients by myself. I rather be a nurse where there is a low patient ratio. One on one is what I can handle. Juggling a lot of patients by myself. It’s to much. That’s just my opinion.

You can't leave the board will take your license for neglecting the patients. Sucks for us with that. The facilities should have their license or whatever taken for not having enough staff

Are you friggin kidding me? That CMT should have pulled been pulled from the floor with 15 patients to go to the floor with 30 patients. Any competent nurse should be able to manage 15 patients. Come on now make it make sense!

90%+ of patients in SNFs are in medicaid so the family and patient pays $0 to stay there. The families should come and help at least

Out of 39 yrs nursing did 1.5 yrs in nursing homes. NEVER had time to do a video. In one place had 32 pts with 2 CNA's where did meds, treatments, quit there when got stuck 20 hr shift for 55 pts. Went to another place had 28-32 pts with 1.5 CNA this place had way higher acuity, fresh postop ortho, fresh ostomy, PICC lines, peritoneal dialysis, trachs as well as actively dying and demented. Admin strolled through to tell me hadn't answered the phone on 3rd ring! When staffing doesn't respond, call the administrator, since you worked for agency it works to call the agency... every agency I worked for was my strongest advocate and made places toe the line. When there is dangerous staffing, call state!!! That first nursing home pays $25k fines routinely but the thing is you aren't doing patient abandonment, also see if your state has safe harbor laws.

I think all black nurses should quit. I heard them say that the bosses or managers where setting the black nurses up to catch the virus. By purposely not telling them if any of the people they have to wait on has infected. And she knew it was done on purpose because when she called her boss she refused to speak about it over the phone in case the black woman so was recording and wonted to sue.
