Why One Empty Bridge Wrecked Trade Between The US And Canada

Most people outside of Metro Detroit weren't aware of the Ambassador Bridge before it was blockaded. But its temporary closure showed why it was so significant, because of the disruption it caused to US - Canada trade. Still there were plenty of questions floating around even after the bridge reopened. So I wanted to make a video explaining the logistics that make this bridge important and why trade goes through this area.

Growing up in Windsor I lived in the shadow of the Ambassador Bridge. My church, Assumption Church, is practically under it. My parents and grandparents are in the cemetery at it's base. The bridge was a huge part of my life growing up and as an adult who knows the number of trips across to Detroit for events. All that being said, it's crucial the "Gordie Howe" bridge is completed. It is an absolute nightmare trying to cross now, and the local traffic congestion is impossible. The recent trucker idiocy only made the obvious more clear. Build that second bridge!!

I’m counting down the days until the new bridge is completed. The Ambassador Bridge will always be special here but residents need more options. Appreciate your perspective from the other side of the river!

I grew up in that area of Windsor also. When I was young (in the 60s and 70s) the traffic was considerable but it got worse and worse for the local neighbourhood. The Huron Church or Huron Line as we called it and Techumseh Blvd intersection became a shitshow to avoid at all costs. You might call the a "second bridge" but I hear the plan is to dismantle the Ambassador Bridge once the Gordie Howe bridge is operational. This puts US and Canada trade in the same boat it is in now with a bottleneck for transport.

@@MrWaldorfian: There is no plan to dismantle the Ambassador Bridge when the GH Bridge is complete. The Canadian government demanded that the Ambassador Bridge be dismantled IF the Ambassador Bridge Company was allowed to build a second bridge beside the Ambassador Bridge.

A second bridge just makes sense. With traffic being expedited it will attract more trade through Detroit. Having to wait for an hour at the crossing is about the same time it takes to just go around Lake Erie through Ohio for truckers. More truckers=more trade=more money coming into the Detroit area. Even the owners of the Ambassador Bridge win because they will have more people crossing per hour instead of having the traffic backups.

Great video as always, very interesting to hear more about the Detroit landmarks I grew up with. Would love to see your thoughts about two of my favorite buildings; the art deco wwj and wjr transmitter buildings! Thanks again!

John Boehner was house leader and also good friends with the owner of the Ambassador Bridge. So perhaps you can do a follow up video where you dig into that relationship and what happened or more importantly what didn't happen at the federal level which for many years prevented the construction of a new bridge.

What are you on about? The Canadian government paid for the bridge because the U.S. Government is a morass of incompetence and corruption. That's not the fault of the owners of the Ambassador Bridge who have actually kept the link open for 100 years between the US and Canada.

Very informative video, I liked it a lot. I wished you would’ve talked about the Detroit neighborhood of Delray that is getting partly demolished for the new bridge, even though it doesn’t have that much to do with the videos topic. Other then that 10/10 video I really like your content. ;)

Good to know that Detroit won’t demolish the old ambassador bridge just that it won’t be used as much due to the new bridge opening ( let’s not forget it’s a national landmark in Detroit become human/irl)

Unfortunately, the Canadian government is mandating the demolition of the Ambassador Bridge a few years after the opening of the new Gordie Howe Bridge.

They were protesting public health measures. They also occupied Ottawa with blessing of cowardly premièr of province who fled to bunker cottage. Meanwhile construction of Gordie Howe shoot the puck bridge was underway despite american opposition. A better built bridge to handle todays and tomorrow's bottleneck. Protesting is easy, solving problems requires effort.

You are off on the metro area by over 1M .Its actually approximately 5.7 m . Your calculation only takes into account the three major counties and none of the urban sprawl into the adjacent counties (wikipedia is NOT a good source) nor does it take into account Windsor itself. Keep in mind that a large percentage of people that live in Windsor work in the Detroit area and have to cross every day. The new bridge is critical. I live on the other side of the country and can see this.

Your comment is wrong on multiple levels and I'll explain why 1.The calculation wasn't mine, Wikipedia's, or a misjudgement. All stats on population were pulled directly from the United States Census Bureau (thus why it says stats and figures from 2020 U.S. Census at 2:58). 2.The Detroit Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Livingston County, St. Clair County, and Lapeer County. Not just Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb. These boundaries are once again defined by the census bureau, not by me. (All counties I'm addressing are visible at 2:58 once again.) 3. Your number of 5.7M is referring to the Combined Statistical area (CSA) while I specifically state that I was referencing the Metro Statistical Area (MSA). Which is why the number I share is smaller. Even then your number of 5.7M is incorrect as the number is 5,424, 742 according to the 2020 census. 4. The population of Windsor isn't taken into account because it isn't formally part of the Detroit MSA or CSA. Ontario and Canada do track information on their population but it's not normal to list that in Detroit's metro area. Metro areas not only are about geographical location but cultural connection as well. Which is why I can't simply add all of Windsor's Metro Area to Detroit's when I have no clue if they all identify/have strong ties to the Detroit area. data.census.gov/profile/Detroit-Warren-Ann_Arbor,_MI_CSA?g=330XX00US220 data.census.gov/profile/Detroit-Warren-Dearborn,_MI_Metro_Area?g=310XX00US19820 All of this information is easily accessible and verifiable through reputable sources which I used in the research and the creation of this video several months ago. Have a great day
