In This Video, I am going to be explaining why I think that Otonashi was the programmer and main villain in the anime Angel Beats. This anime came out all the way back in 2010 so it is a classic I would recommend checking out before watching this video. There is currently only one season of this anime out and unfortunately, since it does end after 13 episodes I would recommend it since it won't take long to watch. This video spoils the entire anime so be aware of that if you do plan on watching the anime. If you do by some miracle happen to read this much I am always open to suggestions whether that be new content or problems with the videos. I will now list character names to boost my chances in the algorithm.

I always thought it was obvious that the characters are in a limbo and they all arrived from different time periods. One feels like he is from the 70s, one from the 80s and one feels straight out of feudal Japan. It felt like that from my first viewing already, it also prevents plot holes. One of my friends clearly did not think this and was very confused by the ending. I didn't even see it as a theory, I genuinely thought and still think this was the intention. The whole Not Yet Dead Battlefront feels like they already came to terms with this and makes the it is God conclusion they come up with make far more sense.

Huh ! Now that you mention it... That makes a LOT of sense. Oh ! Those poor people who probably were there for centuries... I hope they weren't aware of it.

I'd rather prefer that otonashi and the programmer are theoritecal parallels to each other and also the reason why otonashi woke up with no memories and after angel is because of the concept of where memories are stored in the hearts that is either a metaphor, old japanese myth or whatever, I mean I myself didn't get how otonashi actually passed on with regrets whenever I get a series summary because when he died he had already donated his organ to save a life and that could have been satisfactory for him, I rather like a theory where otonashi was not in fact meant to be there but rather was brought there by angel on accident, because of the donated organ

I agree mostly with your final sentiment, however I don't believe he was there on accident. The way I see it, Otonashi was not there due to a regret from his own life, but rather stemming from Angel's regret of never being able to thank the person who extended hers and his own goal to live to help others. Otonashi was, in the end (indicated by his signing of the organ donor card), able to find satisfaction. This is further evidenced earlier in the series when Otonashi leaves the hospital after his sister's death, he witnesses a little girl and her mother thanking a doctor for helping the little girl overcome her illness; following this, Otonashi, who up until this point was living only for his sister's sake, is now striving to live for others and help them. Part of this motivation is evidently carried into the afterlife as he is there for Angel's sake to help her pass on. Otonashi awoke with no memories since he had no reason to remember the regrets of his life as he died with none. TLDR: My head cannon is that Otonoshi is in the afterlife because he is committed to helping others (he helps all the other BF members obliterate) and thus there as the final puzzle piece for Angel's obliteration (angel is/was the programmer waiting for otonashi?). Possibly Angel was the programmer? Waiting for her lost 'love' (Otonashi) to come to her and help her move on, this could be evidenced by how all the members of the NDYBF thought Angel was just an NPC prior to Otonashi exposing(?) her as a person just like the others. She also happens to be the only character in the show able to program, other than maybe Christ (glasses guy who kept sayin "Call me Christ"). I also like the first theory in this video, that Otonashi was waiting for his sister to appear in the afterlife because he could not accept how his sister had lived and died, even though apparently she was able to accept how she had lived. Maybe him regaining his memories after listening to his own heartbeat could be seen as him rediscovering his own path to accepting his life but still waiting to finish his business in the afterlife by helping all the others prior to the graduation ceremony and thus no longer needed to wait for a sister that is not coming.

@@p.bandjames Problem with Angel being the programmer is that the AI implies that Yuri wouldn't know the programmer, but she clearly does know Angel. I do like your idea that Otonashi is there for Angel as opposed to due to his tragic childhood as it explains his amnesia, but it doesn't explain why he arrives so long after she arrives. One explanation could simply be that god wanted Otonashi to not only help Angel but also the Battle Front members, hence why he only arrives after all other BF members arrived, but seeing that god's not an explicit character (and that his amnesia doesn't have a strong explanation here), some may not like this idea. Rewatching parts of episode 12, Yuri asks if some of the NPCs were once humans, and the AI says "Yes, there is. Just one." followed by "It's the programmer himself." If we are to take this AI's words as honest, there are 2 possible meanings to this. 1: Takamatsu (the ripped guy who goes shirtless) is the programmer as he is the only one shown to become a shadow at this point (meaning he's been here before even Angel but has been hiding it for whatever reason. Perhaps his plan was something like periodically resetting himself back into a human after becoming an NPC, ensuring he doesn't stay as an NPC permanently, meaning he may not even be aware of being the programmer, but this is merely far-fetched speculation). 2: The AI doesn't know Takamatsu has become a shadow. If the latter is the case, the AI's knowledge may be so limited that it may not even know if the programmer perhaps succeeded in his plan to meet his love and moved on long ago, or if others like Takamatsu have also become NPCs as a result of this reset, leaving us with little reliable info as the AI wouldn't be a reliable source of info.

Nice theory. I always asume that Otonashi did his proces in the after life before Angel could die. When she whent there, she couldnt move forward because she had to met Otonashi, who vas reincarnated. So when Otonashi died, his soul, fracture in two, one continue his journey and the other one takes his past form and is the one we follow through the after life. It is said in the anime that the after life gives people every thing they need and it self actualice. I think that the after life consider that it needs a real angel, and thats the new part of Otonoshi, at the end of the anime, he starts acting like an angel, making every one move foward. Also the part in which they reunite again, i think is the second life of Angle, but the third one of Otonashi.

My Theory: The world that Otonashi comes to in the first episode, the stage for the Anime Angel Beats, is what is known as a “pocket dimension” or a parallel world adjacent to World-Real. In between the worlds are what is known as is a space or plane between two adjacent worlds, we will call that “Dark Space.” Now the physics and time mechanics of each world are different from one another. In Dark Space, there is no time, there is no construction and de-construction of soul. In a sense, Dark Space can be seen as a piggy-bank or phantom zone in between two or more adjacent worlds. Its only purpose is to segregate worlds, and like hell-real, five minutes on Earth is 5 years in Hell. So dilations are significantly different. I suspect that Otonoshi is not the programmer. The dialog of the programmer in Angel Beats only fleshes out the story more, and provides a goal and a resolution to the story. It answer why they are in that world, what is the oncoming problem, and how it is solved to provide context to and ending. There is no evidence that Otonashi is the programmer. We only know of the programmer when Otonashi meets the goal and making everyone in “AB-World” move on from their suffering. The connection between Otonashi and Tachibana is pretty simple: Two people exist with the same heart moving to the beat of an angel (an unknown greater force of nature). When Otonashi expires, he was a registered donor, and his physical heart was transplanted into Tachibana. So in a sense, they are like a dyad of two beings sharing the same heart, and because of this, they were soul-linked. So when Otonashi died, instead of immediately coming to AB-World, he was tethered to Tachibana who was still alive in World-Real. So for the amount of extra time she lived, one would think that Otonashi spent the equal amount of time in Dark-Space, but in truth, he wasn’t there, suspended for very long. Instead, Tachibana expired and immediately went to AB-World, and Otonashi eventually drifted to AB-World where he is reunited with her and finds put the truth. The truth is his heart was in her chest, and he fell in love with her because they both shared the same heart. On her end, she falls in love with Otonashi because of the indirect gift that she received from him after he expired. So in one hand, the start of Otonashi love for Tachibana is based on a connection of belonging. For Tachibana, it starts with the feelings of appreciation and surrender herself to the man who gave such an enormous gift. When Tachibana moves on, and she leaves Otonashi alone in AB-World, her soul gets suspended in Dark-Space where she waits because she is still tethered to Otonashi in AB-World. It isn’t until he lets go and moves on from AB-World (assuming there is no one there now), it is reborn in World-Real, and shortly after, she is reborn. This would explain the age gaps in the before and after. Originally, the age gap between this was probably five years give or take two years. Towards the end of Angel Beats, i think the age gap shrank a little. If i had to guess, and this would make the story interesting if it ever continued, i think the “Programmer” was a separate person from Otonashi, but the person he had great affections for was Kanade Tachibana who went by another alias before she was reborn and left the world tied to Otonashi. I think the Programmer was attached to Kanade and couldn’t let go of her. In his grief after losing her in AB-World, he discovered the ability to program the the AB-World (assuming it’s a function of that parallel world) and eventually, he turned it into a high school. I suspect that he was attached to Kanade until he lost her, and they were high school sweethearts. When he passed, he found her in AB-World, and fell in love with her again until he lost her again. So after he lost her, he found a way a way to alter AB-World to be campus and eventually, he moved on to the next world to find her again. Only, in Angel Beats, Otonashi is linked to her and they declared their love for one another. So this would create new conflict. My 2 cents.

When I tried to watch this a few months earlier, my level of empathy was like Angel's, which means, almost non-existent if it meant the fulfillment of duty and purpose: -I saw Yuri as a mere warmonger, as she would risk the universe's integrity by facing God, even though it could have been the Devil who arranged for the unfairness that befell her life and family; -I did not judge Angel's attack on the Ootanashi. He was dead and he asked for proof of it. She delivered, because that's her job; -I'm not sure I can be so forgiving towards the hypnotist. He was neglected, I get it. But steal someone's identity like that just to get the love of someone who probably doesn't even deserve it... This one I'll admit I refrain from passing on active judgement. It feels too unfair for me to do it, given I do not know that kind of neglect; -And, I saw the humans' actions in resisting erasure as futile. That was the purgatory. They would either be reincarnated or ascend. That's how it works both in the East and West. All they had to do was to either follow rules or fulfill their final wish. Yuri I might even understand why she couldn't do neither, because even in my scenario, I imagine she would need not to be at peace if she hoped to one day face the Devil. My final veredict... This show was perfect. And I, am an idiot who could never deserve to have my sinful eyes gaze upon this wholesome beauty. Because, I spent too much time with my routine of overseeing. My level of human concern and care is very minimal at worst and lowly average at best. I do have one complaint though. It should have been longer. Seriously ? 12 episodes ? For a show this complex with such 3 dimensional characters ?

Here are some of my theories on why Kannade arrived before Otonashi and why I believe Otonashi is not the programmer. A) Otonashi was probably in the process on passing on until his soul probably got stuck in the realm between the new life and purgatory for a long time which prevented him from moving forward. Since Kannade has the regret for not thanking the donor, he then appears in the purgatory somehow. Hence, he woke up without any memories purgatory. B) Otonashi was probably already born in the new life and lived his life completely or shortly died without any regrets. Then his soul returned to the purgatory without any memories and helped others and Kannade to move on from the purgatory . Man I love this anime. Hopefully my theories make sense lol.
