At the start of the podcast, I was questioning the things he was saying but by the end I was smiling a little. I think it's because he was talking realistically of things that we can do. Instead of saying fancy things he was talking about improving the basics. Loved the examples. Great talk!

If you believe that agriculture is a large employment opportunity sector, I'm bit concern about the vision of govt. We have to decrease the numbers of people employed in agriculture sector yet at the same time increase the agricultural productivity. We have to shift those people from less productive agri sector to manufacturing of goods(low value iteam) and eventually to high end manufacturing like China did. Lewis turning point should be our target.

You are right to some extent. In the US about 3% are in agriculture and they feed half of the world. The reason is mechanization. It has its pros and cons. But even the high end manufacturing does not require that much human labor. The big tsunamis of AI is around the corner. Even the big economies are scrambling to provide jobs . One solution is minimally mandatory wages until the masses can be trained to fix the AI infrastructure and that will be also temporary. The whole concept of 9-5 job is going to be turned on it’s head . In for a pretty rough ride.

While you are absolutely right about the increasing agricultural productivity with mechanization, you should know that it would take a country like pakistan decades to achieve that.p.s people do not want to learn new things or new ways so meanwhile it is better to exploit the current situation while keeping in mind that we have to feed the poor people too. Can’t just think about gains
@asad-kc8zf

It goes back to basic education. I mentioned somewhere else that we need to fix the K-12 basic education instead of establishing fancy higher centers of learning. Then it’s garbage in garbage out. Also with modern mode of communication who wants to go out plough the fields ? That’s not where the jobs are and need to go with modern techniques of farming in order to feed a population of 220 million plus and growing. I know it’s going to take a while. Take a look at the German model where in high school they start to sort out who need to go to university and who goes to a vocational school. Not everyone needs college education. Again just basic K-12 well rounded schooling.

I think we need more economists like Muzzammil Aslam in Pakistan's economic policy (keeping their political and personal views aside) because the way he explains and understands things by connecting them to real market structures is more sense-making for a normal citizen. indeed his political views were biased but we need to see the bigger picture of the current scenario.

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Bhai PMLN obsession with dollar was reason why we witness the age of deindustrialization and import led consumption. Bata and service already manufacturing their products in Pakistan. More and more products will be localized. Please stick to the policy of import substitution. No nation on earth became rich without healthy manufacturing industry. Export led growth is the only path.

Pakistan has income of 5 trillion and expenses of 8 trillion and therefore they have no option but to keep borrowing to bridge this gap and to sustain interest payments on their huge outstanding loans which are now more than 100% of their GDP... IMF wants Pakistan to generate more revenues but that is NOT possible! The only solution for Pakistan is to cut Costs (slash military budget by 75%).. not TAX people more and more! It can no longer seek strategic balance with India (an economy 10 times larger) and get into any kind of race with it whatsoever.

Very confused... This guest is saying some crops were bumper then why didn't the food inflation come down? Moreover if there was bumper harvest in crops like Bajra then trade it with another nation for sugar/wheat, so that common people may get some relief. Secondly, if 12 Lakh new employment opportunities were created with the help of VCs, start-up eco-systems, Technology introduction in food distribution chain and other allied activities, then how come there was not multiplier effect? How come the nation is facing stiff problem with BOP settlement and debt servicing and poor tax collections? I mean at least the domestic borrowing could have been eased. I don't know what he is trying to say. He is showing rosy picture but the outcomes are just not matching his story.

I agree, his explanation is very bookish. Not focusing on core micro issues of our running issues. Unless we learn the skill of proper management into every core operation, we are unfortunately not going anyway. It's surprising how he mentioned that we are cheapest country yet he ignored the repurcussings with our purchasing power. It might sound cheap compared to rest of the countries but in reality in real terms it's more expensive for someone living in Pakistan.

Good interview. But I would like to disagree with his statement regarding Auto sector @23:22 . We were completely capable of producing all parts of automobiles. However, the Japanese were least interested in it. The Govt did not force them & deletion plan was an eyewash. The Japanese skim high profits through transfer pricing (like the pharma sector). Transfer pricing is when Suzuki Japan sells engines to Suzuki Pakistan at high prices, then Suzuki Pakistan wants to increase price because their cost is high.

Well, with my little knowledge I know the sudden implementation of a new technology brings disaster and for a country like Pakistan where most of the people look at the price and profits they have if they loose it the are not coming back. So a slow step like "Muzzammil Aslam" was talking baby steps have to be encouraged by not implementing a rigid scenario but a little bit flexible one. They will surely know the value of their work. Government should take a major step in giving barren lands on contract basis to poor or middle level people to make it agricultural, this will surely boost the people of Pakistan to grow in the field of agriculture and the major crisis of importing things relating to food may be disclosed. Plus the land will grow again and it will surely open new opportunities for others to provide the products directly and indirectly related to it. Let's just sum up: 1: Providing land and making it habitable asset for government + an income stream for a middleclass person can surely bring a change. 2: Providing AID to them as an initiative so that they can work smoothly instead of just giving a monthly to family who is a burden and doing nothing just wasting that provided money. 3: funding an innovative idea that can engage many person within it. Instead of investing in one mega project that is not approachable for the locality. Over and out.

He is not a trustworthy person , he was saying in june that govt will increase 10pc salary of govt employees but govt only did 5pc increase in salaries after 3 long years. Such a liar and pathetic economist , no surprise why this govt has failed so badly bcoz as long as these type of people are assistant to PM how can we expect anything good happening.

@@songoku3716 Prices of potato , tomato and all the vegetables have also increased globally??. Mr i dont know about you but iam a middle class person and facing really tough problems to make both ends meet. If petrol prices have increased globally than what about prices of sugar, floor and other eatable things. You dont know how a middle class and how poor people are living. If they are so intelligent and honest why cannot they prove by their performance?. Failed completely failed. I dont want to indulge in fight with you. Wish you best of luck for your future brother ❤️

I came here to understand the current economic situation of Pakistan. I heard the full podcast. I assume that the respectable guest, obviously more educated than us, was biased. He criticised PML-N repeatedly for how they affected the government, but he did not provide the answer to the inflation questions simply. Mentioning PML-N to and fro was an unauthentic move of a "market economist". Despite this, he could have given real-time market analysis without favouring any government. Overall, it was a good discussion, but I did not like the political smell in the conversation: there should be one more podcast on the economic situation of Pakistan by a neutral person because PMS & CSS examinations are coming. Getting real-time information from such podcasts will be the easiest & coolest way.

This podcast was really amazing. I am least interested in Pakistani politics. I do not understand the blame game culture so I do not follow news and stuff like that. But HIs way of explaining difficult things in layman terms was really informative. I hope these kind of policies lead us to a better future and the next govt also takes wise decision and make good policies with long term benefits. I want my kids to live in a better Pakistan. Hatts off to you for bringing in such gems and guests.
