I was the family rat's favorite person growing up. So sweet, loved shoulder rides, loved to give kisses, and he would do tricks for me. He lived SEVEN YEARS, which is unheard of for rats, even domesticated ones. He was very sweet and very well loved. I was only 11 when he died, but I still remember exactly what he looked like. RIP Ratty ♥️🐁

I used to have pet rats as a teenager. They are great pets. When I passed out from a head rush and collapsed, knocking over their cage, I woke up to my pet rats pushing on my face and licking me to wake me up. Once I woke up they were very happy to see me alive and they did not put up a fight when it came to retrieving them and putting them back in their cage. Great pets.

I remember I had to chose a pet for a science project in highschool, but I couldn't decide what I wanted. By the time the deadline came about I had procrastinated and never made up my mind. My science teacher (who became an amazing friend and mentor) had a batch of baby rats just ready to be away from their mom, so he let me take 2 of them for the experiment. That was probably the best outcome from procrastination in my entire life. Those rats became my entire world for the next 3 years. It's insane how smart and fun they are. I taught them all kinds of tricks, how to run mazes, to come when called by name, even to stand or sit. They really are almost exactly like tiny dogs, and I always carried them around in my front hoodie pocket, so the "pocket puppy" nickname is pretty perfect. I had never been so devastated in my life as I was when they died, but it was a really good life lesson and a great experience. I personally think rats make some of the best possible pets. Really great first pet to teach kids about responsibility and caring for something other then themselves.

@@OddHornedNinja I learned about death quite young. I think I was 5 or 6. We had a coop with many hens and two roosters. One of the roosters was really aggressive, fighting not only the other rooster but hens as well. And, well... You can guess what happened... There were many moment in my childhood then I would bring small dead animals home. Usually frogs, lizards or small birds that got unlucky on the road. My family was mad at me, and then they asked me why I keep bringing them home my only answer was "because I want them to have a nice place to rest". I was a strange child.

The thing is not that rats aren’t like the stereotypical depictions, the difference is that pet rats are nothing like wild rats, as different as day and night. Pet rats are adorable, sweet and cuddly, a lot more gentle and trusting of humans, while the wild ones are not like that at all. It’s like comparing a Labrador and a wild wolf; both may be canines but completely different.

Wildies are just as sweet as domestics when they're not conditioned to be afraid of everything. The personality of domestics is the personality of wildies minus the strong fear response. Humans just very rarely get to see the sweet side of wildies as they usually only express it to other rats, but it's their true nature. The only thing humans have done to the personality of domestics is to remove the fear that's necessary for survival in the wild, everything else is done by nature via millions of years of evolution into hypersocial colony animals.

Yeah. She can attack "the public" and our "tiny pea brains" all she wants. But all she's doing is hoisting up the belief that everyone is dumb and Hates rats. Literally pulled from thin air just to make herself feel superior. I've owned rats and know plenty who also did,. And its a common thing to genuinely get to a place where you think your better than other people because you think everyone sees them as dirty balls of disease when the truth is that's how you think everyone sees them. When people say "I don't like disease carrying rats" they're talking about rats that are carrying diseases. Not caged pets. You absolute fool.
@TechSupportDave
@TechSupportDave Жыл бұрын
@@kavalogue you're reading into it too much. Also, I'm pretty sure nobody likes disease and things that could potentially kill them. So either people enjoy stating the obvious, or they're actually talking about rats in general, because they hold misinformed opinions about an animal. I'd wager both options are just as likely. You have zero idea how many people aren't aware of the fact that cats are Carnivores. This kind of seemingly-common knowledge does fly by people. And I think calling these people pea-brained makes complete sense in such case. You're making it seem like you think "pea-brained" is some strong term, when it's not. Snowflake much?

My pocket puppy was Remy. He passed away 5 years ago but I still miss him everyday. He was a beautiful little soul and I loved him very much. Rats are so fun to feed as well. I used to love slicing a little piece of various produce (that are rat safe) and feed him in a little bowl of little goodies 🥰 my Remy loved to play tug o war too lol

My little sister has a pet rat from a baby she picked from one of my previous litters. His name is Strawberry Ice Cream, and he is super gentle, and can be walked on a leash when supervised. Very sweet boy, she'll be keeping him when I eventually move my own mischief to my new place.

It is important to distinguish these domesticated rats from wild rats. While they surely share a lot of the same traits, wild rats still retain a lot of traits that make them a menace to society. Same can be applied to wild dogs. Domesticated dogs are man's best friend, as they say. But wild dogs or even dogs without any training, can be a source of constant threat to people.
