Theres no way anyone thought Pharrell was not competent enough to be a director at one of the luxury brands. He is the original inspiration for the current trend of collabs of street and luxury. He probably awaited for a brand worthy enough to approach him. Looking forward to what we get to see.

I actually think that P wasn't their first choice. And if both Martine Rose and Grace Wales Bonner turned them down its a huge W. Fuck monopolies
@KidCracken
@KidCracken Жыл бұрын
@@quicksilver3263 yeah I also thought about that.. Like what if Rose and Bonner didn't even want the job (or felt they didn't have the time to commit or whatever). Brands can't just pick who they want and then it's law. And some people don't care about getting bigger and bigger, as long as they're doing fine they'd rather do their own thing.
@THECASUALco
@THECASUALco Жыл бұрын
i don't think we should assume this is the case. Unless Martine and Bonner come out and say this we should refrain from creating narratives that make us feel better about our favorite designers and creatives. That's just my take. Plus Wales Bonner and Rose both did collabs with HUGE brands like adidas and Nike respectively. It's not like they don't sign lucrative contracts at all.
@KidCracken
@KidCracken Жыл бұрын
@@THECASUALco I'm not creating narratives I'm just thinking there could be a million reasonable reasons they didn't get/accept the job. And committing to a collab is hardly the same as committing to a full time job for years. And people are kinda creating the narrative that LV didn't want them for the job. I'm just making a counter to that 🙃

I like the angle you came at this from in regard to Pharrell's collaborative capability and putting people onto new things. A great producer brings many moving parts together for a perfect end result. Fashion and Music are somewhat the same to me, so I already know he has the skillset for the role. I totally agree that bringing this collaborative further at LV could be really awesome for the brand, but I honestly believe he already has a lot of his own great ideas that he wants to architect there. LV has always been the dream job for a lot of these guys and seeing it come to fruition also means seeing decade old ideas finally get fulfilled at the highest level

As you said, the game has changed in the fashion world and LV are thinking at Grandmaster level. It does make me worried that exceptional designers will be ignored because their fame level isn't large enough. How do you get, 'famous', enough to be considered for that kind of job without having that kind of platform?
@uropy
@uropy Жыл бұрын
They can work under Pharrell and work their way up. That’s what Virgil did when he worked for Kanye. Nothing comes easy.
@mrdecember
@mrdecember Жыл бұрын
I don't think this will really change much. At the end of the day, there are only a handful of Luxury houses in an ocean of fashion brands. If working at one of them was the only way to get 'famous' or 'recognised', then it was an impossible game from the start. I think great work will always shine through the cracks. For example, if we take the designers that many feel were overlooked such as Grace Wales Bonner, Martine Rose, Samuel Ross etc - you know who they are! None of them have been CD at a luxury house but you know exactly how exceptional they all are. I really don't think Pharrell stole his job from anyone, and relying on a luxury house to provide you with a platform seems like a losing game to me as a designer anyway.

Pharrell (Kanye & Nigo as well) is an amazing producer. If he has an idea, he can hash them out & get the help he needs to accomplish those goals. A great producer knows who/where/what to tap into to make those visions come to life. He’s also great at seeing other’s talent & put them onto a visible platform to propel everyone. I think he was a great choice & stoked to see the outcome.

I love Pharrell. Huge inspiration. Huge win for the culture. Was a huge NERD fans when i was a kid. Virgil looked up to him so he got that co sign anyway. Kanye is too risky for LV even though hes a connoisseur in that space. What Kanye taught me through his collaborators is that he's creatively demanding to take the brand to another level (i.e adidas yeezy and skims) and hes against the status quo. But. again hes very risky to get him on board. Im all for debates one one one. Pharrell just wants to make cool garments! Wales Bonner would be amazing at the same time im looking forward to see the new collection for pharrell. Im hyped!

I disagree. Kanye isn't a good designer. He is good at marketing. He is able to create sales. Obviously, that is, what it is about for the owners, but he isn't made for a brand of the size of Louis Vuitton. He is able to sell a couple of things, maybe a a dozen, but that is it. Louis Vuitton is far to big to rely only on him being able to create a hype. Thats all Kanye does, he creates hype, not quality.

People really underestimate the design team lol. They are the true mvp for sustaining the biggest house that is LV after V passing. LV will be okay with Pharrel. I’m highly highly skeptical, feels like another monopoly celeb cash grab, looks like grassroots will be the only place to go for challenging fashion, only problem is these monopolies will either steal their designs or offer unrefusable money to either buy off their brands or add them as their creative directors. I’d also push back on pharrell giving new designers space to collaborate although he would I don’t doubt that, I do think either a wales bonner or martine rose who know more young up and coming people in these spaces would do the same if not more, seeing their industry experience? I want to be proven wrong, but they way fashion is heading it’s not looking good….big fashion anyway
