I barely noticed any minor quirks in the video, I was too busy looking at the graphs and listening to the wealth of information this guy has to so kindly offer. He's an engineer, he spends his time researching the science of sound and making great speakers, not wasting it on becoming a KZfaq diva.

Excellent video. A wealth of practical information directly from the man himself. Phil Jones is a legend in the field of audio system design. This was a real treat to hear him speak so candidly about his own history and about the evolution of speaker design in such a technical way. If you're not an engineering-minded person, you may get distracted. Otherwise, you will enjoy the information this brilliant man has to offer. Either way, the important thing is that his bass rigs are amazing.

A lot of good info here but it is so hard to concentrate on it with the constant refocusing. Apparently Phil's arm movements are driving the AF crazy. Someone should have caught this and focused it and then take it off of AF. This also created a booming in the microphone. Even with those annoyances still enjoyed Phil's insight.

Fascinating stuff, Phil. I have a number of your cabs and am a confirmed fan. My favourite is the 4B. It combines the speed and clarity of your small drivers with a bit of old school "bloom" (for want of a better term) to sweeten the sound. I have 3, so can stack them up if needed for larger occasions. The C4 is the most surprising in terms of sound produced for its small size. I have a couple of those, too and they're perfect when space is tight. Adding a decent tweeterless (can't stand them for bass) 1x12 warms the sound up a little and gives a powerful rig that is still very compact. Running a number of smaller cabs means carrying them and fitting them in the car is much simpler and I can take as many/few out as the job requires. All the best.

Informative video. But I didn't hear anything new that's not been known for the past 50 years or so. The key comment would be. "Watts are not really important. It's the spl that is the key factor " so I would concour with that. So if that's the case then why refuse to publish the spl figs of each combo?

This was all very interesting and EXTREMELY informative!! I must admit, this video exposed more than one of my previously held misconceptions.. To which I’m grateful! I’m fascinated with the direction bass design & amplification is headed! I only the same advances would gain acceptance among guitarists.. Coming from a guitarist’s perspective where it’s about all about valve amplification. Heavy and very expensive transformer/ output tube power amp design invented in the 1920’s, And 12” AlNiCo magnet speakers.

Great point to end on: the power draw of the amplifier is very different than the decibel level of speakers. Drums and trumpets only require 10 or 20 watts of physical energy, but it all gets converted into sound.

If you are an owner or looking to own some PJB equipment... If you have any questions, give this hands on, customer focused company a call. Its rare to find companies today that welcome a relationship with their customers... I own 2 Cab47's and love them... Bought v them at different times... Spoke to Steve and Mike from PJB, and they were both a great help, and generous with their time... I came away knowing much more, than before the calls! And, because of the advice I received, I bought the 2nd Cab 47, instead of another cab that would not have matched up as well, and i probably would have blown up the new cab!! I have spoken to several professional bass players that tour with major acts . They generally are using 2 - 4 X 10" Cabinets . When I mention some of the newer , smaller speaker designs , have you used or heard them ? They respond by saying they like the stack they are using . Then comes the punch line . They are not sure if the smaller systems will " move some air " . The bottom line , I think , would be to get these units in the hands of working musicians and let them play them in numerous venues out on tour . Where the rubber meets the road .
@jked7463
@jked7463 2 жыл бұрын
The one limitation not addressed is excursion. A bass cabinet the size of a pen with a million watts won't work because a cone that size would need practically infinite excursion. Even if the driver could have that much excursion, at 5 - 7 mph, it couldn't move fast enough to get the waveform out. So yeah, as you said there is a limitation to the efficiency/power input ratio.

I’ve have one, the C8, and can vouch for its great sound. The weird part is you have such clarity among sound, low through high end, but the physical vibration you get with larger speakers like a 15inch is not there nearly as much. A rock band I had played with a few months back did an outdoor gig in a pavilion and we brought our own PA system. Using a 500w bass head with the C8 (it was only hitting at most 300w) they didn’t patch me through the PA because it was carrying so well, they just put some of my signal through the subs. Jaymie Lewis (Deadbeat Studios, sorry if I butchered his name) has a review on them and you can hear a good amount of detail. I based my decision of if that review and some others and was not disappointed.
@smollande
@smollande 11 ай бұрын
@@AndrewTannusMusic thanks for sharing. It's quite clear to me now that the lack of 'vibration' could be due to the load-sharing amongst several small speakers as opposed to a single 15. You hear the notes played but the floorboards don't rattle. I suppose this is the clarity that I've heard others speak of. Good for recording as well as technique focused playing where the thump can get in the way.

New understandings for me: first, power compression due to increased heat-caused coil resistance. You make a good case for the use of multiple small voice coils in this regard. Second, the temp sensitivity of Neodymium-- suddenly the behavior of neo in the clutch makes sense. Very accessible engineering info, the casual ramblings of a very organized mind. And now I must ask-- while I agree that Watts are less important than max SPL, I wonder why PJB publishes the power handling but not max SPL of their cabinets. Or have I missed the spec somewhere?
@johnridley1656
@johnridley1656 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I am concerned about the lack of spl in the specs . I can't see that 4 miserable 5 inch Chinese speakers are going to keep up with a band in a gig situation. Home and studio stuff, it'll be fine.

Expense of manufacturing the box is not a few percent, but a few times more. Expense of lugging the box around. Work for the customer to carry the box around. All 3 are fails when you can now build, like he said, a 1,000 watt speaker for $1,000 and a 800W amp that you can pick up with one hand and stuff into a coat pocket. To build a 18 cubic foot folded horn cabinet now will cost the manufacturer most of $2,000. Takes two men to load it onto a truck. Lot of people have stories of permanent back injuries from hauling bass amps and so hate anything heavy. Need I say more?

I tried to watch but that constant tapping and refocusing in the video made it too annoying to watch despite wanting to know the info. WTF was that?

PJ21UK : Well Mr. Jones I feel that we here in the United States need to go back to making products ourselves. In the late 1980’s,I was building guitars in some of the most well known factories here on the east coast. The wood,pickups and strings were all quality products. I didn’t have an issue with our best mahoganies being from Honduras. When I got into building/repairing tube amplifiers. Getting to work and learn from the best the Tri State area had to offer, there was a sense of pride! Today I’ll easily use tubes made in other countries. Depending on the feel & sound myself or customer is going for. So I should recant my statement and say I wish more products were made here? I do however think most tube amps I’ve worked on from Asia were junk. Cheap potentiometers, jacks,switches etc.. As for speakers, Faital Pro series from Italy, some of the Eminence line made here and Jensen from Italy, I’ve been dealing for years. When I first started doing amps I had a Guass 2X12, EV 2X12 and JBL E120 2X12 cab for guys to hear their amps. If the guy hated their amp, id tell’em that was more of their actual sound. Most guys like an inefficient speaker because it distorts a certain way. You know better than anyone, we had little options back then. Now we have option anxiety! Personally I love your amps! I think the amp I tried was on par with an older Walter Woods head I had. It wowed me like the first time I had those Bose 901’s and a set of Altec VOT on the floor. Since I’m not gigging like I did way back, I’m using my old GK400RB with an old 2X12 Bassman cab I loaded with Faital 300PR’s. Smaller gigs 1X12 Bag End with a Faital. Honestly the Phil Jones rig I tried had as much if not more bottom with the 8’s. I liked the 8’s because they actually gave me more of a mid sound I liked? I like a little smooth grit to my sound. What I don’t like about my old GK is I think the power section could be warmer? Loud is one thing and feel is another. I felt your rig even at a low volume. The way an old Trace Eliot AH head would feel? You’re bedroom level but you feel it in your body. Do I break out my old Acoustic 220,320 or 320B heads? Personally I’d rather sell them as cool sounding as they are and get the PJ rig. Don’t know if I’m going to let my pride in the way of getting a “Dream Rig?”

@@theirritatedirishman5440 (I could agree with you more. However it is almost an impossibility. If I could bring my factory back to USA I wpould do it in a heartbeat. If I did it now, it would be sucicide for my business.

PJ21UK : Well,Mr. Jones, I have to tell you that I’m absolutely stunned by the sound and feel of your amps. I will be indulging soon!!! That’s what most guys don’t understand, there’s a difference between “Sound And Feel.” When a rig does both beautifully it’s a must to have. What I’d love to see is an amp like your’s with a simple foot switchable midrange? Someone wants that Jone Paul Jones scooped smily face sound? They step on that switch to defeat the mids. Want more of a “Growl?” It’s there. Merry Christmas Brother,talk soon?

@@theirritatedirishman5440 unfortunately all the American amp brands are under something else now so all these name brands are moving to China. Ampeg has been primarily made in China for several years now, they are currently owned by Yamaha. Mesa was recently bought by Gibson so it’ll probably be moved to increase profitability. Aguilar was recently purchased by Korg. If you want American made amps these days you pretty much have to buy used or stick with boutique level gear. But even the boutique stuff for example greenboy audio uses components made in different countries. Amplifiers are starting to be like cars. Even the cars that are mostly made in America have parts like airbags from China.

The camera operator needs to turn off the auto-focus. That's where all the 'clunking' in the audio is coming from.

Seriously enjoying this video and was very crurious about this exact topic but I have to say for a guy into audio and a company that works with musicians you sure did a poor job of recording your own voice. I'm watching this and listening on some pretty cheap studio monitors and there is some boom when the camera shifts focus. What the heck? You're in the sound business for Pete's sake!
