I’m so sick of Disney recycling the same ‘going against family tradition’ storyline that’s been used in Brave, Encanto, Coco, Moana, Little Mermaid, etc. Instead, why can’t we have a story where the protagonist is struggling to find her purpose while her family actually tries to encourage her instead of bringing her down? It’s a struggle I’m sure many of us can strongly relate to.

The elemental theme actually seems to be more about racism and how people were shunned off from each other due to being different because the different elementals don’t actually live together and amber and wade are two completely different people of different races and have to deal with that problem.

Everybody jokes that Pixar films are ''What if -blank- had feelings.'' and it's largely true. One of the biggest things that Pixar seems to forget is that what the characters are is integral to the story. Toy Story can not happen if characters are anything else than toys. Even Cars 1 and 3 have a reason to be cars. If Lightning was a human he would just need a newer car. Everybody talked about how the Good Dinosaur is just a boy and his dog story but with a dinosaur as an owner and a human boy as a dog. The magical world of Onward is just our world with fantasy creatures and fantasy gags mixed in. Pixar used to make human stories in fantastical worlds. Now they are creating boring stories and turning fantastical worlds into cities and suburbs.

'Turning Fantastical worlds into cities and suburbs' That is exactly how I feel about it. Lightyear is a great example, they could have had a bombastic, cheesy sci fi throwback to 90s action movies, but they instead made the most boring alien world with no space exploration, no aliens, and a dull color scheme. The 3rd Toy Story will always be the perfect conclusion. One thing that was unique about Toy Story is when the first one came out many kids be it primary school/elementary school or whatever it is will have grown up with Andy since then. In the 1960s, Dr. Seuss made the definitive work on the subject, The Sneetches, and in the 1970s it was animated for a wide audience. There's really no need to tell this story again as there is no new take on the subject as far as I can tell. Worse, Pixar picked a very strained metaphor for the story. Fire and water really can't mix. We use water to put out fires and this is very much a good thing, not a bad one.

I keep expecting Disney to announce that Pixar and Disney Animation will merge into one department, because they are in trouble in more than just film production (and that's bad enough), but they're slashing dead weight left and right, and pooling resources would be logical for them to do. Plus, they've devalued the Pixar name so much, they don't have people turning up to them just because of brand recognition anymore. Especially with how Lightyear turned out, I think that was a wake up call for a lot of casual viewers.

I think I have an idea on how they could've made the forbidden romance story work if they really wanted to do that. Have the roles be reversed. Have it be about Ember and Wade's parents having a forbidden love and leaving their elemental towns but Ember and Wade don't agree with it because it's dangerous and they feel like their parents are escaping their responsibility and family and have to work together to bring them back before they evaporate for good and leaving their families to fend for themselves. The theme being about how children feel like they have to take responsibility for their parents which is something I feel children can relate to.

@@justsomeguywithnomustache6245 Good point, theme and execution are very different. It's important to know that these days no idea is truly original. In fanfiction i've seen stories with the same theme but executed uniquely in a refreshing way. I also agree that not every story has to have a complex plot. Luca is one of my faves because of how simple it is. To me the theme is a little weak because it reminded me of every high school movie which was about someone who is in a sheltered family until they meet and fall in love with someone who they escape with and changes the main characters world view. This however is personal and nit-picky. I don't recall Pixar ever doing a romance before so it would be interesting to see how they'll execute it. I love how the movie looks and love a good opposites attract romance every now and then. Also the target audience, kids, may have not been exposed to these cliches yet. I remember as a kid I loved Gnomeo and Juliet and didn't know about Romeo and Juliet. Is it original? Obviously not, but I still loved it and it got me into Romeo and Juliet. Their stories have become a lot more generic. Think of the run of Toy Story, Incredibles, Wall E, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and Up. Out of all of those, only Finding Nemo can be said to have had a conventional, familiar story. All the rest, a rat that has a talent for cooking, a robot left behind on a polluted earth, an elderly man who attached balloons to his house to leave his old life, a family of super heroes in a world where they're not allowed to be heroes, Toys that gain sentience when people aren't looking... Just some of the most original, wonder filled premises any studio has ever brought to film. Latter day Pixar, even with good films like Inside Out are premises that are more... Normal. A person's emotions personified is interesting but totally what I'd expect of the genre. Ratatouille had a french rat that had a relent for cooking, lmao. I still have no idea how they got away with that. They used to have some artistic balls. On reason why Cars and Brave were seen as such relative let downs were the familiarity of their premises. They simply did not have that creative, out of left field originality that all the early Pixars did.

My problem with modern Pixar, is like Disney, they are too big to care, both studios are so successful, they feel they can make anything, that will automatically be a smash hit, they feel entitled to the audience applauding them, and win another Oscar, this lowers the incentive to be innovative and bold. Pixar films are not being made for us, they are being made for the investors and shareholders, these films were probably conceived in bokerages, with charts and graphs, mathematically plotting to fish the biggest whales and their money, it is cynical to see the audience as a licence to open bank accounts. I was quite happy Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio won the Golden Globe and Oscar for best animated feature, I liked his film better than "Turning Red", del Toro took chances, he appreciated art, and respected his audience, Turning Red joined cars as the only Pixar films that did not win an Oscar or Golden Globe.

If elemental was a story about how “love is stronger than fear and when you really love someone, you will take any risk,” then it might be better. He as water is a threat to her as fire and the story being about if elements loved each other over trying to be a metaphor for biracial love because he is a threat to her. What will that say about two cultures coming together? Or a dad like figure made of fire trying to raise a child like figure made of water he found left on the road. A story about how the love parents have for their children is endless and is a sacrifice because children take a bit from their parents. The time, patience and need to grow up so you can take care of someone other than yourself. Idk. I’m a new writer so these might sound boring but at least to me they seem more intriguing than a regular love story. No story is original and that is true however it’s how you take a common theme and expand on it. Some of the best stories are made from artists who are sharing a deep feeling they hold. Many stories talk about feeling alone but the ones that do it best usually come from an author who was feeling lonely when they wrote it and the twist on how they would show what being alone feels like.

I think it would be really interesting if they flipped the script in Elemental and instead of the typical "different people from different backgrounds overthrow prejudice and get together" story, made the message "some relationships really aren't meant to be." Fire and water really shouldn't be... romantically compatible, just like how some people, no matter how much they love each other, just don't work together. Often we hear that love overcomes everything in a relationship, and while that's true to an extent, there are definitely some relationship dynamics that just are not healthy from the outset, some differences (like having completely opposite values, for instance) that aren't compatible. In cases like these, the people in your life warning you that it might not work out can actually be trying to alert you to that instead of just saying "different people bad."
@Paul_Recall
@Paul_Recall Жыл бұрын
I agree with you that that would be a much more interesting premise, but I feel like the film in it's current state cannot tell that message. So far, it seems like what Element a character is is determined by heritage rather than personality, as all families shown are the same element. If the elements represented what kind of personality someone had, then that story could work. I am not a fan of how this movie is shaping up to have elements represent race, despite the elements being different. Water actually hurts fire as shown in the movie, so giving in universe justifications for why Elements should not be together is not good when your story is about race, as that only gives more justification for segregation (which there is none).
@katiemcq3936
@katiemcq3936 Жыл бұрын
@@Paul_Recall Yeah, if it's supposed to be analogous to race, the plot I suggested would definitely not work, and neither would the plot Disney seems to have planned 🙃 -For my plot, it would have to be the case that the elements' differences were more representative of differences in values, compatibility, personality, etc., instead of race -For Disney's plot, if element does = race, it would have to be the case that the elements didn't actually have an inherent incompatibility due to the harm they pose to one another. We can already tell from the trailer that they DO, though, so hopefully Disney isn't planning on making some kind of problematic race analogy here... I guess we'll just have to see how Disney handles it, but my hopes are definitely not high given the lack of nuance they've been using when handling complex themes lately. (I'm also not sure why they would want to handle the whole "Racism but it's [x] instead of different races" idea again since they just did that a few years ago with Zootopia. Seems like it'll just be more of the same if that's the route they're planning on taking)

My personal problem with the current Pixar movies is that I don't want to see realistic animated movies anymore. If you're going to make the backgrounds as detailed and accurate to real life as possible then why not just make the movie live action? Why waste the efforts of dozens of animators to design something that looks the same as the stuff you can see outside? It's like making cheese by letting the milk spoil even though you already have cheese in your refrigerator. Especially when they still make the characters in the world look cartoony anyway so why not just go all out and make everything look like that? The reason why movies like spider-verse and Puss in Boots 2 are loved by fans is because they take advantage of the fact that they're animated and use that to create new worlds beyond what regular humans can do. Pixar's animation still looks amazing but I can't help but feel that the novelty of their animation looking highly realistic is going to wear off after everyone else starts making more creative looking worlds. I might still see elemental just because Pixar has exceeded my expectations before, but I think they should try to do something different than cartoon characters in a realistic looking world in the future.

I think this also has to do with most of the original creators and writers of these beloved movies either now being retired or removed due to controversy The studio is now mostly in the hands of young or inexperienced creators who sadly don’t have the same talent their predecessors carried. They prefer making stuff that’s pretty or passable for money but not memorable These people also seem to not want to take risks with their movies to tell deeper darker stories like the originals. BUT this could also be due to the fact studios like Disney are “scared” of making stuff that’s dark now in fear they’ll lose money from helicopter parents (what’s considered “appropriate” now for kids movies is MUCH different than it was 10-20 years ago)

That's a pretty extreme take, being a sequel doesn't make a film inherently bad. First and foremost it's neither realistic for an IP holder nor healthy for the brand in question (usually) to be inactive. Most of the greatest films (as well as books and games) of aaaall time usually have the number 2 or 3 next to their title, they are usually sequels, because the creators took their lessons and experience and improved and expanded on what they already had. If the industry applied your logic the majority of what's considered the best of the best in film, gaming and television straight up wouldn't exist. They should ABSOLUTELY NOT stop making sequels to things, it's completely nonsensical. Then there's the elephant in the room. Why would they from a creative standpoint? If there's an established cast of characters, locations and lore why not use it? Why not expand and build off of what's already there? They should all just stop making sequels and prequels because of some people's "prequels/sequels bad, new IP > anything else any day" bias? Most of the time with a good writer and director behind the helm there's another story to be told and worth telling. Creators shouldn't be driven to a point where they create an IP and then throw it in the bin and start from scratch because some people dislike the mere concept of a continuation. The solution is elementary. They just need to do both, both original and sequel/prequel outings. And so they do and good on them, they're just pretty bad at it lately, they need to do better, much much better.

Wanting a new story and new animation with every new movie is really unrealistic. There are only so many stories that can be told in so many ways. The options are not limitless. The odd thing is alot of the newer films you cite are directed by new people at Pixar. When you mention the good/bad films in 2015/17/20 you'll find that Soul, Coco, and Inside Out were directed by some of the people who directed the films during the 00s while Cars 3, The Good Dinosaur and Onward were made by new people. It could just be that the new staff at the company, talented as they are, aren't as bold as some of the older people who worked there. That being said though Cars 2 was all on Lasseter.

I don’t want some existential thing about death in Soul and commentaries about race and being different in Luca. I just want some wacky cool rich story that makes me laugh and cry like WALL-E and Finding Nemo. The sequels lately have also been mid as hell. Especially Toy Story 4. Its very simple actually. Disney commands Pixar with a fist of iron, controlling what gets to be produced (more mature themes that show nuance and the grey areas of life and whatever) cause they want their product to be safe and sell in countries like china. Add that to the fact that the new voices are still finding themselves and you get some mid, some great but def not mind blowing a la The Godfather esque movies. I agree with pretty much everything you said here. My issue with the recent Disney/Pixar output as of late comes down to fact that the stories they’re telling are ultimately pretty shallow and lack anything truly memorable outside of enjoying them in some way while I was watching them. As much as a lot of their recent films haven’t been bad and are fairly enjoyable, they’ve all been either overly simple, seemingly more focused on representation and lacking that edge that made the initial run of Pixar masterpieces so timeless, moments like Buzz’s reckoning in Toy Story 1, Jesse’s backstory in Toy Story 2, Hoppers reveal and how dark A Bug’s Life actually was, the thematic reveals of Monsters Inc and Wall-E, Mr Incredibles breakdown before the final battle in the incredibles, Anton Egos flashback in Ratatouille, the opening montage in Up or barracuda attack in finding Nemo. Like as pleasant and relatable Luca, Coco and Turning Red were on a surface level that’s as far as they went with their stories and themes; and they’re less memorable and interesting because of that. It’s pretty much the same problem that Brave and Cars had but instead of being exceptions in the catalog movies like those two are now basically the main output from the Studio

@@Attmay unfortunately they passed on 3D animation solely because it's easier and faster to produce a whole 3D animated movie than a 2D animated movie. Especially if the 2D animation is frame to frame and not flash, but even if you combine ftf with flash animation the times still longer than whole 3D. Disney is producing movies just to gain money, they do 3/4 animated movies every year so they can hope that at least 2 of them are successful. So they are sacrificing the right time to develop a good story and spit safe ideas just in different environments. About pixar, I don't know if they copied Zootopia or just thought at the plot in a safe way, but still kind off disappointed that they're running out of ideas for stories. I just personally wish Disney will stop making so many movies in an unbelievable short amount of time resulting in boring stories or awful animation (just think about how terrible was the cgi in the Pinocchio's live action) and also they aren't listening to the public who's tired and sick of their live actions and sequels. Pixar is unfortunately following Disney 's directives and will fall as Disney is doing rn.

Let me summarize it quickly. Every single company is focused on one thing right now: get your attention. And nowadays there is more competition than ever. That's why most of the big brands are focusing mainly in sequels and remakes, because they bet on the safe side. It's happening the very same thing with AAA games. They play safe and don't innovate because they don't know if a new IP will sell enough for their current standards and the trashy economy all around the world.

one thing about Pixar was that they made stories intended to stick with the viewer, stories about growing up and eventually having to let go of childish things (toy story) finding purpose and new love even after great loss (up) giving up everything you know to do what is right (Monsters Inc), (risking your life to do what you love as an artist (Ratatouille) being strong enough to protect your family (the Incredibles) just to name a few Pixar's stories involve a lot of sacrifice (and death) in their themes something not typically found in your "and they lived happily ever after" story that Disney was so known for but as the years go by Disney has still played it safe, heck even more safe that before because of a lack of a villain for fear that it'll offend someone. and they've taken Pixar down with them now while some of Pixar's films stay good, they feel a lot more like typical Disney films and when they try to do the sacrificial themes, it clashes with other elements of the story like character motives and marvelesque humor (like in lightyear) Pixar used to take risks, I remember there was a lot of talk about the amount of death in the Incredibles, now, I see people confuse Luca for a Disney film and Strange World for a Pixar film, there's very little difference nowadays

To me, the most distinctive aspect of the Pixar formula is creating non-human characters and putting them into problems and conflict that could only work with them an not to actual people. -What if you were someone's favorite toy and one day your owner replaces you with a new one? -What if you were an ant and one day you got tired of not thinking by yourself and always doing as others say? -What if you here a superhero and one day you were no longer allowed to be one and forced to live as a regular person? -What if you were a monster in kids closets and one day a kid appeared inside your closet? Each of them of course also having a deeper and more universal message behind that can be interpreted and taken by everyone. But the first movie to break this rule was Cars, as there was absolutely no reason to make the characters non-human. The story could perfectly well be about an arrogant car racer that on the way to the final cup has an accident in a small town and is detained by the local police and forced into social service... and NOTHING would change by the fact that there are no freaking sentient cars. Since then Pixar has departed more and more from this formula looking for more "mature" "human" and ambitious stories... The first couple attempts like Wall-E and Up were successful, but since Car 2... They seem to have lost the ground. Today they are all about sequels from their golden age and original movies that are indistinguishable from what Walt Disney Pictures does.

This is going to be a hot take: I actually don’t mind the characters in Cars being sentient cars. The world would just be boring if it was all humans, no different than any other animated films. Sure, the world-building can be strange, but I think with a few tweaks it can actually work and be creative. Plus, the first movie isn’t just about racing, it’s about roadside travel as well and the places in Radiator Springs accommodating to the needs of cars like Luigi’s tire store, Flo’s cafe for gas and oil, Ramone’s paint studio for custom paint jobs, Lizzy’s store for bumper stickers and Fillmore’s tent for organic fuel. Replace them with humans and it doesn’t work. What would humans want with tires, gas and oil, bumper stickers, organic fuel and especially custom paint jobs? ESPECIALLY the latter. What would a regular human being want a custom paint job for? Just painting their bodies and not just regular painting, but painting that can ONLY be used for cars? Do you even know what type of paint they use for cars? I’m sure it’s different from regular paint humans use and because of the chemicals in them, definitely wouldn’t be healthy for them. So for a movie themed to roadside travel and dedicated to the old days of cruising, especially when we later learn a new interstate was constructed thus allowing other characters to bypass Route 66 and Radiator Springs, thus not needing to stop for amenities like new tires or paint jobs or organic fuel or bumper stickers or even necessities like regular fuel and gas, them being SENTIENT cars is necessary for those themes and that plot regarding Radiator Springs to work.

@@hunterolaughlin You just proved my point by saying exactly what I think "If the Cars movie was told with humans instead of sentient cars, it´d be a pretty boring movie". I am aware of what you are ssying, but I was talking about less superficial aspects of the story and more into the narrative. It´s not about building a world for cars... It´s about creating a STORY for cars. My point is not that if you put humans in that space it would uncomfortable for them. My point is that if you put humans there the story should not work at ALL. Even if we go with the world building, I think it´s pretty deficient as other movies like Robots have done a much better job designing a world that is clearly not made by or for humans. The think about the painting in Cars, I think has a pretty clear human equivalent: Tatoos.

@@eduardof7322 Well, let me tell you, I’ve been putting effort into trying to improve the world of Cars to have it make more sense and be believable that it’s a world that sentient cars can exist in… and definitely has not been easy. Example, when I came to regular paper maps and not GPS which sentient cars can easily use, I had to figure out a way they can look at regular maps without any hands and the best I came up with is having the maps be in those glass stand things you see at nature trails when you want to look at the different trails, and the cars could look at them to decide which road to take and they’d be at the end of any cross-section for the cars to keep track if they’re traveling on the right road. That was one solution I came up with, but then I remember there’s other types of vehicles like tractors and harvesters, which the film has with Frank and the tractors which are the cows of the universe. I thought about keeping them, but realized if the tractors are cows, then they’d be animals and one of my fixes was removing any animal-based vehicles like birds and insects, and also if the harvesters are the farmers (not bulls like they’re based off on in the film), then they’d be harvesting wheat. But what good is wheat when I already decided cars wouldn’t need to eat food by getting rid of restaurants and diners in their world as well as any human cooking equipment?! I honestly don’t know why I’m going through this effort to fix any of the “holes” in this universe many others like to poke at. I just don’t understand why they can’t just turn off their brains and roll with it.

Last Pixar/Disney Animation project (not film, project, I'm including the dreadful shows based on Pixar properties here) that I wholeheartedly enjoyed was Zootopia and that was almost a decade ago. Everything is either mid AF, bad AF or so forgettable you even question what Pixar's goal even was with the film in question. Even movies that I enjoyed on a first watch like The Incredibles 2 got pretty rotten as time passed, with the films' flaws kicking in hard once you notice them and taking you right out of the experience. The inevitable comparison that usually befalls this topic is usually "But is DreamWorks better" and I might as well give my personal take on that as well. I think so? DreamWorks has had many yikes projects this last decade as well (Trolls, the Spirit reboot etc) but accompanied by their low lows have been some pretty high highs. Not only the recent scapegoat PiB: The Last Wish (which is peak don't get me wrong) but also plenty of their other films like KFP3 and Captain Underpants (HtTYD3 was also received really really well but I personally think it was absolute 💩 so I'm not gonna count it😝). Where DreamWorks shined the most was television, with excellent shows such as *literally choose any of the Dragons shows*, Paws of Destiny, tAoPiB, Boss Baby: Back In Business and Camp Cretaceous just to name a few. There were still bad shows here don't get me wrong (Dragon Knight and Spy Racers I'm looking at you) but overall I'd say their library of TV shows is pretty entertaining, especially compared to Pixar's. I want both companies to step up their game and go back to what made their films good in the first place, cause they seem to have lost sight of what that was.

Do you know how much having the water cycle can do? since water turns into clouds then back into water, tenachly making them immortal, even if they are burnt they can't become ash they just turn into a cloud faster. I think it is more having an issue adding humanity to a Fantasy concept, because thats what turns a sterotype into a masterpiece.

I was more turned off by the art style they went with. I thought it was super generic compared to the usual stand out Pixar vibe. Whenever I looked saw a trailer I just thought it looked too much like Steven Universe, or something of the like. For the film itself. I thought the story couldn't really hold up to the message it was attempting to give. The overall theme of Mei trying to find her place was nice but the B plot was lacking IMO. One of the main things that annoyed me when I watched it was how quickly her secret got out. Her friends find out and like 5 minutes later they're pimping her out to the other kids at school to buy the concert tickets. It felt rushed and I thought it would have been a bit better if the group had more time with it. It could have strengthened their friendship and maybe have a high moment of her being more confident feeling like she's managing only for it to come crashing down when it finally came out. I think they rushed the film along a bit too much in general and didn't really give many of it's characters time to breathe. That could have been the point though, now that I'm thinking about it. If that's the case it might get a bit more credit.

The company lost its original charm and drive to do new things and started to create a formula and n order to survive. Pretty much. They know they can pump out the same stories that have worked for generations because generations of kids keep being born and keep watching their movies. They’re not worried about the audiences that get older and see the pattern: they realize their market and have a formula that works and they are going to stick to it.

i think your points are valid and interesting but i also think something the public often doesnt understand is that stories arent mainly there to get you from what they tell but how they tell it. its not about the direct content but abou the experience they give us. what i also think is Disney and Pixar (etc) movies are there especially to teach a younger audience the black and whites of life and the older Audience the Shades of grey in between that grasps individuals identities. i do think the part where movies often lack is that they go for form over function as they focus on sensational visuals and audio and not content. But i also do think this is mainly fault to us viewers and not the Studios. Studios give us what statistics prove to be selling most, not what they themselves wants. Content and how its presented shapes through us as audience. But i only say that from the perspective of a designer myself

I think when Pixar was relatively new they were willing to take more risks. When they became more established they were more focused on maintaining profits. It seems to happen a lot.

No when they were independent they were focused on taking risks when they were bought by Disney they were forced into making profits

While I'm not a huge Pixar fan, I have faith they'll pull through. EVERY sucessful studio has a down period if they last for a long time. But they'll pick back up again.

I just realized just how meaningful the original cars movie was. Great video man, and hope the animation industry learns something.

One line makes it so Monsters University doesn't make sense. Mike Wazouski had a line in Monsters Inc. where he mentions him and Sully have known each other since the 4th grade. How did they first meet in college, if they knew each other since 4th grade?

Cars 3 could have gone into tuner culture and the import scene. McQueen could have gotten a new look and some under the hood (SPEED!) enhancements, new rivals, old faces (Snot-Rod, Boost, Wingo, DJ and some others from MTT)
