For a while the barrier for me was that the format needed a banlist. Nuclear banlist hit and they’ve been adjusting the banlist since then, so there’s a lot more fun and interesting decks to play now.

Great vid! Premium is a great format with so much to explore in each clan. Yeah it can be daunting to a new player but in our experience, how you engage with the new player and how positive you present yourself in showing them the format really helps in retaining the new player. 😊

In my community we play Premium format, we don't play Overdress, for different reasons. Personally, we find the Premium format more fun than Standard. Even my Feltyrosa deck was converted to Premium format and with the Festival support, the deck is very competitive. All the points you mention are correct, and something that affects not only the Premium format but even Standard, is the excessive cost of the cards and more now with the implementation of the promos that cost more than 50 dollars being a common rarity. This is one reason why we focus more on Premium, because we only have to update our decks and not buy new decks if we play Standard.

Thanks for watching and wow this is the first comment I've heard that purely focuses Premium over Standard. That makes a lot of sense in both the promos and the necessity of buying new decks. That's why I mention the stigma that Premium was more costly, isn't always true. It really depends on the cards that are needed in a deck. Thanks for sharing your feedback too 🙏

Standard promo is there to incentives going to weeklies. But that would only work if the playerbase ain't as spread out like the west is. So yeah.

I was reluctant to go to premium previously. It's because some cards are hard to find and the old, good cards are quite expensive. But now that I got into it, it's actually the most fun format. Although the problem I have with it till now is that there is a huge power gap between the different decks such that you see the same decks again and again everywhere and theres little amnt of rogue decks that are playable.

That's why I was mentioning "decks with similar power levels". It may not match perfectly but something within the same proximity haha. What clan(s) do you play now in Premium?

@@CommanderJaime I mainly play Link Joker and Tachikaze. I also play Aqua Force and Angel Feather but I wouldnt call them "clans" cos for these 2 clans I only have abit of spares for 1 deck. I can totally relate when u were talking about similar power levels. It is fun and games until I face things like Jet with my Tachi 🤣😅. Havent tried Gaia from history collection tho. Hopefully it would be good enough.

@@bryantimothy8616 pretty cool combination! I have a casual Ancient Dragon deck myself and have Chaos. They're both very unique with their mechanics. Gaia seems good because you can revive any 2 units. How's your play testing?

@@CommanderJaime I love Chaos too. Was previously running a build that focuses on locking opponent's attacking RCs but I feel like the old chaos (the one that keeps ripping opponent's hand) way better after history collection. I guess it's especially due to the build having more soul with prison order (RIP Zinc) when harmonics in any clan can unlock cards. For Tachi Angerblader is very strong but it has consistency issues. It needs lots of pieces and ur sweepers can go to another sweeper's gauge most of the time. I guess it's just that the equip gauge mechanic has always been a source of inconsistency and deck out. That is why I recently am testing out pure Ancient Dragons. Little to no equip gauge 🤣🤣 altho the strides are somewhat weird for them. Way more consistent but less power ceiling also. It's abit hard for them to hit numbers and to generate hand cards. Gotta bet on the OTK with gigannotopharaoh. Ill let you know once I tested Gaia from History Collection. I havent tested it at all actually. What about you? How have your testplays been!

@@bryantimothy8616 yeah Chaos can also give Force markers to screw over History Collection decks. They can't do their super stride skills if they were given a marker already. Yeah in Ancient Dragons I do use the Pharaoh stride as a finisher as well. I do play Fronts since Tyrannolegend can stack them. It feels good when you power up 4+ restanders LOL I haven't tried Gaia myself. Just mainly theory.

I'm actually the reverse, I used to be a premium main and I had played Premium from G-BT01 but recently I've just moved to a Standard only player. There's 2 main things that pushed me out of the format. 1. Banlists: Premium format needs to be kept on top of due to the large card pool and we haven't had a good banlist since Mori P's nuke of a list. Banlists are too infrequent and so many hits have been redundant (Stunverse getting put to 1 AFTER Exterminate came out, ND Alice choiced with Harri stride). While other things have been left alone for too long. 2. Uneven support: Premium collections specifically are laughably uneven in what they support. Select clans have been given things like 'Heart Enablers', 'Guarding Interaction', 'PG GGuards', etc. While others are left in the dust.

I totally agree with those two reasons. It can be a more dynamically changing format to make it more interesting. Yeah the fairness isn't there for all the clans. I've seen over the years that when a clan gets new support that is really good, it shoots up in viability (Murakumo, Nubatama, Megacolony for example).

It took me a long time to get my friends into the premium format. They started out during the V era and the power creep of V was intimidating for them to start another format. Eventually I talked them into watching the G anime here on KZfaq and we built decks from the anime. They loved it. Now we play premium over discord 2 to 3 times a week. For me, it's the lack of reprints. I do know Bushiroad printed out a bunch of reprint sets and/or Revival Collections in the past. But the circulation was so short only the full-time players/scalpers/hoarders got access to them. I am a returning player (went on hiatus until the lockdowns were over. Also, a Kagero player here), the ridiculous pull rates for the upcoming History Collection along with the absurd pricing for the cards in that set, it's definitely a major deal breaker for me and would rather invest in Standard instead.

Yeah definitely understand where you're coming from. Feel free to invest into Standard more if you want to get the physical cards. You can always play Premium online if you have a desire to do it from time to time.

I am a premium player myself, and I do play on CFA (but not frequently nowadays due to my job), but the thing that basically made me practically stopped playing premium is that my deck is Japanese deck. Because English cards are just more expensive in my country (and SEA country I wanna assume) and I am a little scared of trading my cards away, I ended up sticking with JP cards. And with the fact that there is practically no official jp premium tourneys nor unofficial premium local tourneys (or ones that just doesn't fit my time), I just kinda stopped. I still do play it casually though, and I am fine with it, but I guess I just have a competitive side in me.

Yeah I hear the JP side isn't as big in Premium. Which can be challenging to find tournaments. It's good that you stick with it casually and that's still fun. That's your competitive spirit craving for competition still. I'm sure in time/availability you can still compete in an event or two when they arise. There are BRO and BCS events coming soon too.

For me as a cardfighter there are reasons 1.)So many mechanics to understand its really hard understand them all 2.) Cost of cards yeah its hard to find singles u need 3.) Favorite clans are to find and prices Like example my favotite clans like shadow paladin and link joker 4.) And lastly deck building is hard for me to create since always include new cards Example Regalis pieces G3 guardians Draw pg Etc. So these are my reason why premium is hard to build for me

Its good to know that standard is getting popular nowadays because back when it first came out me and my friends predicted that it wont sell and kill the vanguard franchise. We were so used to the premium format (and i mean like the old format and meta) that committing to standard is costly (We live in South East Asia some cards are very expensive even if its common) that all of us just stopped playing. In my opinion why players dont play premium is probably because it looks overwhelming.

Wow thanks for sharing your story. That's rough. Yeah old Premium is fun too. Yeah there's a lot more to do and account for in Premium. Which is one of the reasons I like it. Standard doesn't take much effort to figure out decks and matchups once someone has developed the skill. So it can get boring quickly.

Been playing since og limit break. Premium is my favourite format and there were indeed moments made me wanna avoid it(zarzan era, 2019 ezel era etc) there will be eras where you either play best deck or don't play at all at the competitive scene but casually it is probably the most fun format. One reason my friends are not willing to play premium is because they feel that they won't be able to remember every possible combos and they don't wanna play a game with a new opponent and get otked out of nowhere because of the lack of knowledge due to the large cardpool they need to go through to know most decks. Another reason is that certain cards are very hard to find but my argument was that revival collection exist but they still don't want to find certain commons and rares and some g guards that are just impossible to find at this point

Yeah some formats in the competitive scene definitely had huge power gaps. But yeah the casual side is still really fun. It can be a lot when you don't know what other clans do. I recommend just getting a general idea over the clans. Like Murakumo tends to make clones, decrease power with Shirayuki, etc. Tachikaze tends to eat its units to call them back or for just skill costs. Then in a game, you feel a bit better and not totally lost lol

simple entry barrier, few standard stuff enter the scene, this is completely different from early V when V stuff comparatively compete with older stuff, now with the upcoming hiscolle harmonics is also a must

Why i stopped playing premium: Harmonics Messiah - 69 usd; Strides under new errata - Flip a unit WITH THE SAME CARD NAME. This tells me 2 points: 1- Bushiroad keeps breaking their promises ( we will not make cards that need another copy of them to work [2019]). 2- TCG consumes your money because people plays stock market on children cardboard. If i wanna play now, I'll proxy everything and play for fun. My community is long dead since 2018.

As someone who played mainly standard up until a little while ago, Premium is a significantly better format in terms of options and fun. Stronger and more broken but so much more variety.

@@CommanderJaime Granblue and Luard (currently proxying the G2 V PR until it comes out in March). Was thinking of also testing Nubatama in anticipation of the crest making Rinne super insanely broken beyond compare. I just like the power trip of premium. Such insane numbers you can hit. Played a Narukami player who Stunversed me second stride and I had 10 cards bound until I called Sleeve Belle with 32 cards in drop (was able to turbo the number from Navigator) and it became a 60k booster behind a 70k Skull Dragon and Bartho guard restrict lmfaooo.

for us its very hard to get into due to how hard the cards are to get, how rare other people want to play it, no consistent main sets to look forward to that shifts the meta, and no anime show as well to get hyped, which really saddens me as I want to use what I had from previous vanguard eras. Probably the biggest hindrance in these is the low amount of people who care about premium in my country.

At least at the local level here, the answer can be boiled down to people don't quite like that it has the same problem as YGO where broken overpowered combos that very clearly were not meant to be possible happen because cards not intended to be used together are allowed. Players who already enjoy YGO can probably get more into Premium, but a substantial chunk of the vg community over here are people who wanted to quit YGO in the first place and Premium kinda reminds them why they quit YGO. A common opinion I hear is instead of P they should've done G continued with G Collection sets that would've been better curated to prevent this issue of "this broken play obviously is an oversight because cards from different formats designed with their specific formats in mind being used in the same deck cause unintended interactions".

Interesting that does make sense. I'm a person that casually plays Yu-Gi-Oh when I get the chance. I do enjoy it still. So I can see the added complexity and combos are similar to what Yu-Gi-Oh provides. That's understandable if people that stopped playing Yu-Gi-Oh and wanted something more balanced in a new card game. Standard is definitely a great route for that. Thank you for sharing this 🙏

@@CommanderJaime History Collection kinda does something similar to that idea of G continued by revamping the older G cards and making them the central focus again..... but the common complaint I hear the most about Premium's lack of oversight with card design is that Imaginary Gift and Stride shouldn't be in the same deck, and the History Collection Erratas are basically just enabling exactly that.

I agree with Elin111. Premiums issues for me have just devolved Premium format into 'YuGiOh light' which at that point, I could just actually play YuGiOh if I wanted to be playing a game like that. The issue is two fold aswell, there's the meta decks that just have the best cards (Bermuda & Narukami have been meta relevent for 4+ years at this point and just continue as they have so many above average cards in their card pool). Then there's the random cards that aren't strickly ban worthy as they don't top consistently enough, but their card design leads to nothing but frustration from the opponent (things like Gredora Stride Floodgating turn after turn or cards like Operator Girl, Linka resulting in a 'did you draw the out' situation with Elementaria).

@@elin111 gifts are fine but I believe it shouldn't have been just "get 2 gifts". I was hoping for card design specific to the clan. Like get 1 gift and do X mechanic for some clans. Or other creative ideas.

whats bushiroads obession with releasing these premium battle decksets lately? messiah, chronojet and the three overdress ones and the premium format one for pale moon and grandblue? if u wanna release them around once a year like with the legend deck then thats whatever but releasing all of those in a row without a single " normal trial deck " is insane i wouldnt even mind if they nerfed the decks with like less of the op cards more filler cards, cray elemental OT, no draw pgs, all commons no foil, basic/no g zone,no staple reprints before selling them at trial deck price and with no add ons like sleeves and deckbox bc the price those decks retail at right now/when they came out is/was not worth it, u can pay that price if u want a deck to go win nationals/regionals with but those decks wont make any more ppl wanna play standard/premium again wether thats new or returning but those trial decks definetely attract new players since u get a bare bones ready to play deck which can be upgraded later, do u think this trend of battledecks at exorbitant prices will continue or do u think theyll sell trial decks again? making proxies aint a valid solution to the problem, everyone buys the actual deck for a reason otherwise everyone would make proxies apart from comp players we as consumers want to feel the real cards physically and not paper

It's an investment that was well worth it in my eyes as well. I do recommend it to players that really want their play mats/certificates protected/look good on a wall.

The degenerate things in Premium just make it feel so pointless to play unless you're playing meta. We tried doing Premium at our locals but people just don't come even when they have a deck. Some players will inevitably bring the most disgusting top rated thing they can think of and it ruins the whole vibe. It feels wrong to straight up ban the meta so people just stop coming rather than complain.

Yep exactly, when players get "destroyed" it can feel "what's the point". Perhaps just playing casual is better in this case. Usually tournaments have players that want to win and will play the best decks.

You can definitely view it that way. Both V and Standard have very limited card pools compared to Premium.

The biggest reason a lot of VG players didnt touch premium is that, lets face it, the format is incredibly broken beyond repair. When you drive checking 6 times and then 3 times isnt meta. Where theres a vg that attacks 3 times while also deck thin. That also isnt including their rearguards. Yeah people seeing that already say nope. The salt i felt in standard overdress is enough. V guys most won't even gonna go to premium because while V is degenerate format in itself, but at least it didnt have OT. And other stuff. Added to that bushi just add a huge wall cost to premium by harmonic Messiah. Yeah the future ain't looking good for this format

Bruh There are two reasons people don’t play Premium Price and availability of cards Both of these are in Bushi’s hands and they refuse to fix them. The history collection set just proves it further. People aren’t even pulling playsets per CASE because of the insane 3 card packs. If staples like Crystaluster were easily available people would join Premium quickly. You mention proxies in the video but face it, no one wants to play with proxies over official cards, they don’t feel good. Also the OT segment, dude instead of advocating for stuff like just play casual without it, tell Bushiroad to ban it. It makes this whole game an absolute joke as a competitive scene. It’s even more ridiculous that they gave up supporting the only format without OT.
