Well done Mate, takes “balls” to take on such a change in location and life. I am Australian, so the good weather is easy to identify with. My Wife (She’s a Pom) loves rural Europe, particularly Portugal, Spain and France and if it wasn’t for our Children (6) and 5 Grandchildren….. we’d love to do something similar to what You have done. However we are building in soon in rural South Australia 🇦🇺 and I will just follow your experience and live out our European passion vicariously through your and other similar channels. If we get back to Europe and we happen to get to southern Portugal…… we might catch up for a few frothies 🍻🍻……. Meanwhile enjoy your life and we’ll enjoy following your escapades.

Loved this video. I love Portugal and the Portuguese are such lovely people. We often visit the Algarve and stay in Silves and love to spend time in Monchique. We never use the motorways and just stick to the N25 to get from Faro to Silves. Thank you for such an interesting video.

Hi Andrew! Interesting story. It seems that many people from the UK are hoofing it to Portugal for very good reasons. I moved from Montreal Quebec to rural Nova Scotia. The family originated here. The city was insane. I had to drive to work about 4 blocks through 8 traffic lights. I decided I had enough of the politics, crowds, and sitting for long periods of time in traffic because they were always doing construction. Nova Scotia is much more sane. The winters suck but we do have the mildest winters in Canada. Every place has a negative. It is said that, regarding Nova Scotia, your heart will never leave. There is truth to that. But the palms, the fruit trees, the beaches, the weather. P💓rtugal! So tantalizing! I could get used to that.🙂👍🌻🌷🇨🇦

Ok I’ll say it for you only because I’m Portuguese from immigrant grandparents and l was married to a Portuguese guy from the Acores. My children are first generation American. I live in a huge Portuguese area south of Boston Faults …..We are intrusive at times which is exactly what you said. People getting up close to see and or hear whatsoever is going on. The second thing is we are LOUD especially when we are gathered with our families. I think those are our biggest faults. On the other hand we are hard workers. We are resilient, kind, compassionate, honest, loving, always willing to lend a hand, proud of our heritage and love our festas(parties) especially when family is together. Oh yes we definitely are Catholic and join in on many church celebrations and ceremonies. I’m just finding your channel now but I’ll binge watch and catch up w you later. You’re a lucky man. If you’re lucky enough to live in Portugal then you’re lucky enough. PS… we are amazing cooks.

Perhaps worth a mention of all the Ex.Pat clubs and activities. Hash Running, Cycling clubs , Motorcycling clubs Badmington etc. etc. And how active people stay, later in life, even if it's just wandering down to the local bar in the sunshine for a few hours every evening knowing your mates will be there.

I am from Portugal and follow a few others like yourself who have made a home in Portugal. I am very keen to find the right place for me and my family (although they are much more reluctant than I am). The ambition is similar, build a more self-sustained way of life, growing your own produce as well as animals. I would love to combine that with the potential to earn some money from providing some rental spaces within my property to allow other families to come and visit to enjoy that more relaxed lifestyle whilst still being able to go on day trips to various locations. I know the Algarve and most Southern areas get very hot during the Summer but equally further up north it doesn't escape the heat either. Looking at properties and prices, what kind of budget should one set themselves plus contingencies for living there without necessarily earning something (I realise You Tube is an option but still limited). In terms of language, it would not be a problem at all.

Andy, Thanks for that tour d’horizon which we found both interesting and enjoyable. We’ve been watching since you were draining and renovating the well which seems longer ago than it was and enjoy your videos greatly and admire what you have set out to do and have achieved. Loved your point about the lack of overt materialism (we are fortunate to live somewhere in the UK where there is a similar unflashy vibe save for the tourists).

Your best video so far Andy. It can be intimidating baring all to strangers as to why your life took such a change in direction. However, there are many of us in the UK and elsewhere that need people like you to show that changing ones life in a major way is not only possible, but can be the best thing you've ever done.

My late father was a Sicilian artist and sculptor living in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Obidos, Portugal when I was 12 in 1977. He flew me there when I was 16 to spend the summer. Obidos is a beautiful walled village with a castle in the center. The people were lovely and the culture so rich. We spent days at the Algarve, enjoying the beach life. A wonderful experience for a young man. I had my first beer there, I believe it was called Super Bock.
