People just need to exercise caution, I swim outdoors all the time, the sea is cold but people still swim in it, and the sea has rip currents. Other countries like Germany create nice swimming areas from old quarries. In the UK we just rob the ground of its mineral wealth and create YET ANOTHER PAY TO FISH LAKE. Accidents and drownings have always happened, they happen every year around the coast, but we do not fence off the beaches and put up warning signs of deep cold water. It is more about people being careful if you do not think you can adapt to cold water stay out. My body adjusts within about two minutes and then I enjoy my swim. You have to be careful not to swim underwater or dive into water where you do not know the depths, you must first check for underwater obstructions. The quarry I swim in has underwater branches and hazards but with care, it is very safe. If you are not confident swim with a buddy or swim with a line attached to a float. Be cautious before the water temperatures have time to increase and the thermocline gets established in summer. The place I swim actually got too warm for me in summer, I had to go to a spring-fed oxbow lake for a cooler swim. Swimming under the influence of drink or drugs is stupid, do not do it! Take a picnic, but do not expect to eat a massive meal and then be safe in the water. Most importantly of all, create goodwill with landowners by taking all your litter home with you in a bag, no exceptions.

When the water is that ripply there is also a current. I once swam by myself in a lake and didn't pay attention and was carried down towards the dam and had to swim against the current back to shore. I was so fatigued when I got out of that water, I knew if I had been in the water any longer I would have drowned. So I don't swim by myself anymore.

We had a gravel pit within 10 miles of where I grew up. We were there a bunch. We heard of underwater currents, large fish and a bunch of other excuses not to go there to swim. I do remember one guy that drowned there. I didn't know him as he was older. 30 something I think. He tied a heavy thing to himself and carried it off a ledge everyone knew of. 30 feet on the bottom is where they found him. My babysitter would not let us go there the next day and we missed the recovery. She knew him and cried all morning about how the under current must have got him. I'm talking 1983 ish.

My father told me about when he was a kid and a local quarry, they would find large rocks and swim out into the quarry and allow the stones to drag them down deep into the water to see how far down they could go. No one ever got hurt or drowned. When I was a kid we used to jump off a sheer cliff into this natural "well" to prove our bravery to each other. The "well" was about 15 feet in diameter and 40 feet deep to the water's surface. The water was about 15 feet deep. None of us ever got hurt except for one kid who was drunk. The thing about governments is that they have to have something to do or else they worry about being useless, so they tend to make more and more laws and find new things to make people worry about in order to maintain their relevance. Safety commissions are the most likely to do this.

The quarry is a convenient place for the mining company to illegally dump their toxic waste. Often the water in a quarry looks very clear. Its clear because nothing will grow in it. That's the part of the story they are not telling. If they are actively dumping at the quarry, they certainly don't want you to see it. Other than that they don't want to be held liable if you were to get injured. As far as the swimming itself is concerned there is nothing particularly hazardous about the quarry.

ArtemiaSalina most quarries are far deeper than that and have rusted machinery at the bottom, causing water toxicity, not to mention water moccasins and eels

@EndofMusic A sudden change to really cold could cause a swimmer to gasp and inhale water. So no, that's not total bullshit. However its more likely that the water contains toxic chemicals commonly used at mining operations. Other industries may also have been dumping there as well. So yeah, the owners don't want kids swimming there. Old quarries contain hidden secrets.

this is a tipical fire service scare mongering video, specifically designed to put people off of what to me, is about the greatest passtime in the world, open water swimming. the fire service has always been very anti open water swimming, and can't seem to get how enjoyable it is compared to boring indoor pool swimming. some of us don't want to be 100% safe all the time, so back off and stop nannying us! also, there is plenty of info from places like wildswimming.com, and the outdoor swimming society, that gives advice about cold water, getting tangled, and such, to let people decide for ourselves, rather than being dictated to by these fire service killjoys.

Whilst I agree, I don’t think that’s the message here. Even if you are a strong swimmer these places will quickly reduce your abilities to swim at all.

all these videos, claiming quarry's are a dangerous place to swim, cant tell us why, other than the typical hazards you look out for as a swimmer. I would like a 'real' reason aka-undertows.. nope, whirlpools.. nope, sharks or gators...hope not.

It's cause they dump chemicals in them but they won't admit that so they just say it's cold and deep and dangerous and leave it at that.

Because of the steep cliffs. You can't see the edge of the cliffs underwater, so imagine wading through shallow water before suddenly being dunked into freezing cold water hundreds of feet deep

in my opinion, if a quarry is being abandoned it should be by law that the company that dug it, has to put up fences, or some other way to stop people from going in. if not that at least warning signs.

Honestly, yes. They *should* do that. And they have been doing that, in some areas. But sometimes the water is either, too toxic, or too deep for them to even get near it, and safely place fencing around it.

No people should take responsibility for their own safety. Otherwise, you would have to fence off all cliff tops and the Sea. Most drown because they swim without due care and attention, or swim under the influence of drink or drugs. The Quarry near me is a great place to swim, the water is clean and very clear, it gets too warm at times. But often my time is spent clearing up old beer cans and bottles usually shit Lager beers I would not even put down my toilet. So the same people who have so little respect for their bodies they drink shitty poor quality chemical filled Lager to excess, are the same idiots who swim after drinking. If they die it's their own fault, not the quarry companies or the government. The same idiots will also drown in the sea or die when they drive their cars pissed up. We could do with a few less piss heads, the more that die off the better, no sympathy at all for them.
