If you for some reason need a new entry into this series adjacent to this & a bit of a darker more nuanced spin off, please beat me to the punch id love to see a bigger brain tackle that

6:51 due to the prevalence of tandem bump drafting, in 2011, NASCAR made some changes to the front end of the NASCAR Cup Series cars (then in the 5th generation of vehicle) to increase the temperature rise of the water, forcing cars to back off to cool down several degrees. I think the changes were to the size of the duct leading to the radiator, going down in size. Joey Logano is quite infamous for his AGGRESSIVE pushes at Super Speedway races, as he had caused a few incidents in the past, but he is very good at the style, having won the Daytona 500 a few years ago.

Something to remember too is that in nascar, some cars are better pushers than leaders. Some people struggle with their car getting too loose when leading the pack whereas someone else could be getting tight . Super speedway racing is a 180mph chess match oh processing where you can develop a run to pass the lane next to you, managing risk to save your equipment for the end and knowing where your cars setup is after hours of racing.

yes and no. just as we've also learned from this video, it's not necessary to make physical contact in other to profit from this. the car in from can go faster by not being held back by the same low pressure zone behind because the following car changes a lot in terms of aerodynamics (yes, affecting the leading car.) fragility plays a reason but Formula One cars aren't spec cars, so they just don't behave the same. that's why the only reasonable attempt to this can be made by team mates which is what we've seen in the past during qualifying. it's also worth noticing that they drive on circuits that frequently involve either heavy breaking or high speed turns; in both cases, the loss in downforce is detrimental.
@eliascregard396
@eliascregard396 8 ай бұрын
@@HxTurtle I think you are confusing bumpdrafting with normal drafting
@HxTurtle
@HxTurtle 8 ай бұрын
@@eliascregard396 no, I don't think so. normal drafting only helps the guy behind and has an effect of several car lengths. bump drafting helps the guy in front as well and requires them to be really close normal drafting is to reduce the gap on a straight and ultimately ends in an overtake move (or attempt.) whereas for bump drafting, this isn't the actual intend. it's to gain an combined advantage (the video explained it quite well where he said, "think about the same frontal area, but twice or even more the engine power.") what I wanna add to this, as it wasn't too prominent in this video, is that physical contact isn't required for this effect to kick in. hence, "bump drafting" (where the guy in front also gets an advantage) is theoretically possible in Formula One as well. (yes, the example I pointed out, that it was trialed several times in qualifying [cf., Ferrari at Monza] is a poor one. yes, the beneficiary car was behind in this case, which isn't enough to deem it as regular drafting, but the gap was too large for the leading car to gain an advantage so yes; that indeed doesn't count.])

Bumb drafting actually isn't illegal in NASCAR, locking bumpers is. In 2010 and for several years after they discovered they could stay connected for the entire lap or two, then swap positions as the push car overheated to continue on pushing. The racing was basically 20 groups of 2 car tandems driving to the front then falling back during the switch & driving back to rhe front. The 2011 Daytona 500 is a great example of this.

really love the nascar inclusion in these videos! as a lifelong fan, and as someone that's driven those things on the sim the past 3 years, i can tell you it can be beneficial but one wrong misjudgement and the entire field dies. i've done it before and it's not fun to set off 😓 seeing it in open-wheel is both really cool and definitely more sketchy. it would be really nice to see someone try it carefully in f1 sometime simply for the ridiculous nature & feasibility but i don't think toto wolff or red bull would be happy cashing in checks for damage 🤭

Drafting is why you don't see outsiders racing on ovals in the Cup Series in NASCAR. A Cup race is no place to learn how to draft with these cars. In fact, unsafe drivers would get intentionally dumped into the wall by Cup regulars.

The same principle works in the water as-well in mass water starts in triathlon or long range swimming. The wattage or energy used is really decreased.

This is drafting. It used to work in NASCAR till all the cars are just cookie cutters and identical to all other cars. Works better on short track than the two long ones Daytona and Talladega. Plus in NASCAR they bump each other around the track. And when doing it they don't break like F1/Indy cars do when they touch. Rusty Wallace said the same when he retired from NASCAR and was in a cup car with an Indy driver I forget his name. Rusty said we do 200mph around a track. Indy guy goes well we do 220 around the track. Rusty said well we bumping the hell out of each other at that speed. Indy guy goes oh we touch we crash/break. Although I haven't watched NASCAR since the Faux Noose Hoax. I had been slowing down watching it and that was almost the last straw. Then NASCAR had everyone bowing down to Bubba "Smollett" Wallace and kissing his feet thinking he was oppressed. Yet his White daddy was top of a bank the entire time he grew up thus he was never oppressed just a spoiled brat.

Oval racing is extremely precise, requires 100% focus all the time, bad brakes, a 3500 lb car that has substantial oversteer, high horsepower/low downforce, and learning “side force.” In fact, no former formula 1 driver has won an oval race in the modern era (25-30 years) despite 500+ combined starts. Oval champions in Indycar like Franchitti and Hornish also were pretty bad. Statistically speaking, a driver should be able to “luck” into a win with a 1/3 of that number. The 1.5 milers are extremely difficult especially when a driver masters the art of running the wall.
