I like a versatile powder and I want to demonstrate that IMR 3031 is viable option for just about ever rifle from a .222 to a 30-06. In this video I discuss my logic and the various calibers and loads I'm already shooting with IMR 3031.

3031 is excellent choice for duplicating WWII M2 ball ammunition for the 30/06. (157-150 grain bullets) It has a very good burn rate for the gas system of the M1. In order of “best” powder for M2 ball and 165/168 grain 30/06 is IMR 4895, IMR 4064 and IMR 3031.

30.06 with a 150-grain bullet using IMR 3031 was the very first centre-fire load that I ever loaded. That was back in '71. I pulled the recipe out of the charge card on my new ten dollar Lee Loader tool kit. I fired the rounds in my $75 Remington Springfield 1903-A3 with a shiny new civilian stock. The load worked so well that I never tried any other until I sold the rifle in '74 and put the money toward my Weatherby Mark Five in .300 Weatherby. The 3031 was way too fast for that. I went to Du Pont IMR 4831 Now fast forward to modern times, IMR now has its five new Enduron powders that prevent new copper fouling and even diminish old copper fouling. I find no disadvantage to them whatsoever,, and, taken altogether, they can do anything that any other powder can do and just as well. Go to the IMR website to read about the powders. I am using one of them for the Weatherby and for 7 MM Mauser.

I'm sorry to hear it's July and you haven't been reloading. Where I live the prairie dog season on public land starts in July so I've been reloading quite a bit of .223 ammo. I used to use 3031 in my .223 but found a powder more suited for what I want. Loads listed in all my loading books always list more 3031 powder than will actually fit inside a .223 or 5.56 case. Here in Colorado we can't use a 22 caliber to hunt big game so my .223 is a truck gun and used for pesky critters. There is however no animal that lives here that I would be afraid to shoot with the .223.

Don't use 3031 for the 180 grain bullet. You can use it but the full potential of the bullet is not achieved. IMR 4350, a slower burning powder, does very well with the 180 gr. bullet. With 3031 about 300 fps will be lost.

In regards to using 150 grain bullets in . 30-06 reduced loads for deer, you will find that the bullets will expand adequately but less quickly. That actually is a good thing when it comes to unwanted excess carcass damage. Even Hornady indicates their Interlock bullets behave better at impact speeds in the sub 2700 FPS range. You really can change how a bullet behaves for the better by backing off on the gas.

Just to play I used to load, every once in a while, a few 110 gr. plinking bullets to a very high velocity. They would leave the muzzle and turn into a grey/sliver puff in the air a few yards away. I haven't done that in a long time and I don't recommend it to anyone but it does show the versatility of the 06.

I've never used 3031 in .30-06. Makes me wonder if it might make for great reduced load powder with 150 grain bullets. For deer in timber country I can't justify full house loads. 2700 fps is screaming speed for those conditions. 2500 fps and a bullet intended for .30-30 is plenty for the usual stuff.

@@preachersdayoff I checked your test fire video on .30-06 with IMR 3031. Sounds like it maxed out at 49.5 grains. Not surprised. I was approximating military 150 grain ball ammo with Hornady 150 grain Spire Points using IMR 4064 with similar charge weights. IMR 4064 is slower burning than IMR 3031, so peak pressure and max charge weights will of course be much different. My nephew shot his first deer with one of my 150 grain Hornady Spire Point handloads at about 2700 FPS. 200 honest yards on a woods road crossing. I paced 210 one direction and 215 the other. It was a slight down hill from his shooting position. Incredibly long shot for being in the woods. The load was certainly adequate. 1917 Eddystone with a 2 groove Johnson Automatics WWII era barrel. I have used IMR 3031 in 4 different cartridges with decent to perfect results. In small to medium cases is where it is at its best. That powder has been around since the 1930s. It was the best choice for several cartridges until ball powders started stealing the show in a big way in the 60s and 70s for several reasons. As for using it in .30-06, it is obviously very workable. I'm thinking reduced, low recoil loads may be where it could really shine in .30-06.

3031 is a great powder for everything I've used it in but I do believe the 150 grain bullets are small for the 30-06. I understand many people use the 30-06 as a deer hunting rifle but it is overpowered for deer in my opinion. It works well for that but so will a 50 bmg.

@@russellkeeling4387 Hello again. We seem to run in the same circles on you tube. I learned that . 30-06 and . 270 were both more than enough sauce for those Huerfano county mule deer about half a lifetime ago. I kind of laugh when somebody gets all excited about various deer cannons talking like those mags are capable of killing deer deader than dead. I believe the old .300 Savage has plenty of power in a .30 caliber deer rifle. It also shoots far enough and flat enough for deer hunting about anywhere. About any place you can hunt deer, a .300 Savage has been there shooting deer. Some friends west of town used a . 250 Savage for decades. They killed deer, elk, mountain lion and black bear with those little . 25 caliber 100 grain bullets without issue for decades. I would prefer a bit more gun myself, but it is a perfect example of what you can do if you shoot straight.

I used imr 3031 about 50 years ago when it was about the only thing I could get up in canada.I have never liked it because it doesn't perform in real cold temps.I use imr 4064 for everything from .300 savage/.308 in 150 gr.bullets at average vol. and imr 4350 for 165/180gr bullets in '06.The '06 is bolt action remington or ruger. You need to use a powder that will fill the case or even compressed loads because any void in a cartridge will cause uneven burn if you aren't shooting up or level.Pay attention to the fill rate on cartridges listed in the reload manual and quit trying to get sued for killing someone,Ok?
