This was great, thank you! I just started getting into houseplants last month, and a friend gave me a fiddle leaf fig she found at ALDI to start me off. It took me a few weeks to realize he wasn’t doing so great, so I pried the grower pot out of the decorative plastic pot and found that his roots had grown out the bottom and wrapped themselves around the grower pot! He got repotted right away! Lesson learned.

Aww crap. I just repotted a plant into a larger pot. It’s recovering probably bc I have better soil now, but should I move it back to a smaller pot? Is that repotting too often too soon or??

Violet Thompson, repotting again will cause a small amount of trauma to the plant, but having a plant growing in too big of a pot will be much more detrimental in the long run. So if you have determined that the plant is in too big of a pot, it would be best to repot it. Here are some videos that will help you make that determination, if you haven't already seen them: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hL6pa7pp1-CRdZc.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pc6JacufuNSbfpc.html Let me know if you have more questions!

I started mixing my own soil (it’s been a slow process). I’ve started mixing potting mix, perlite, and peat moss- not 100% sure this is a good mix but any info or suggestions are appreciated! 🪴🌱

Kelly Ramirez, sorry for the delay. Yes, that sounds like a good mix. Adding some worm compost would be good, too.

The 1/3 to 2/3 ratio plant to pot referring to height of plant or over size of the plant? I have an avocado tree that I started from seed it’s about 3 1/2 foot tall very thin stem in only leaves on the top 8 to 10 inches and I reported it the spring into a Aidan spot in since then it just seems to have been struggling it was doing much better in the 6 inch pot then I thought it was getting too small for. The roots are very well developed in the 6 inch pot. Do you think it would be a wise idea to repot it into a smaller pot

Christina Hutchison, Good question. If the plant is tall but without a lot of leaves, or is a vine, you do want to estimate the overall mass of the plant when looking at the 1/3 to 2/3 pot ratio. If the plant is not doing well in the bigger pot, you might want to go down a pot size. Is the soil remaining wet for long periods of time?

Healthy Houseplants Does it seem to be but the diameter is 8 inches but it’s one of the taller pots I’d say it’s almost 10 to 12 inches tall.

@@christinahutchison3967 If the roots also fill up the pot with the same ratio, as mentioned in my recent video on root mass, it could work well. That's often an easier way to determine when you have a vining, rangy plant. Here's that video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pc6JacufuNSbfpc.html
