Good video. Fed has always said, he hits his serve at only 80% of full strength. He holds back because he wants to be more accurate. I'd like to know what you think is reason why his serve is so accurate. And how we can as amateurs achieve that accuracy. I have a theory but I'd like to know what your thoughts are. Thanks.

Fed’s serve is a thing of beauty. The fluidity, ease, balance, coordination, different rotations, bends and angles - they come smoothly together and deliver a serve so versatile, accurate, mysterious it should be declared a great work of art and protected by being included in Unesco’s World Heritage List.

Simply put, (in my humble and amateur opinion) Fed has mastered repetition and consistency. If you videoed him hitting 50 servers down the middle on the deuce side, and layered those videos over each other, they would look virtually identical. For us amateurs, we can barely throw the ball up exactly where we want! Definitely a masterclass here from Fed, and great video

This reminds me of people talking about Greg Maddux being able to pitch despite not being able to throw hard. The reality was that he was able to throw hard, but chose to sacrifice speed for accuracy and movement. Federer is still capable of hitting 130+ mph serves but chooses to go with more spin and accuracy. If his max velocity was 120 mph he wouldn’t have a great serve because he’d be serving Jenson Brooksby speeds to be accurate.

I once read that, of the Big 3, Federer, Nadal, and Djocovich, none ranked in the ATP top 50 when it came to serve speed, but that all three ranked in the top 10 when it came to measurements of accuracy: depth and angle. Don't ask me how such things are measured, I have no idea...

Excellent video. Fed was asked about his serve. I cant remember when and where but I do remember Fed saying that the toss is the most important. You mentioned disguise and that is exactly what Fed was hinting at. He said you want the same toss for almost every serve, particularly slice out wide, flat or topspin. 6:30 demonstrates it! Thanks for the video!

You're right. I noticed this when watching some of his old matches. You would see Fed toss the ball, arcing it towards him and has three spots to hit the ball, whether it's right, top, or left. Then, he would constantly change angles with whether it's going to the T or the slice. That ambiguity is what made his serve such a thing of beauty to watch

I's a good video in comparison to tons of crappy other materials regarding Federer's serve on yutube. Still did't reveal everything, but you got the point in most cases. I can say his service motion is very fast and compact in comparison to others. He has had a slower motion at the beginning of his career, but it kinda looks like removed the "overthinking" element from his service motion and let it flow naturally with a certain pace, which kinda works for him very well. That's one thing. Another thing is that he has much, much more of the pronation motion in comparifon to forward motion in his serve. It gives the bal extra top and side spin and. And he can choose the balance between side and top spin on his serve without making it noticeable. His service motion is actually exactly what service is all about. He keeps his opponents guessing till the very end of the match and his serve doesn't let him down ti the end of the match. Ideal for me.

Awesome video! Fed creates so many opportunities for himself on his serve with the combination of his forehand, anticipation, and excellent court coverage. He is one of the most complete tennis player and such a joy to watch. I will miss seeing him on tour when he finally decides to retire.

The most important thing you didn't mention is that fed has a jackknife motion in it and that's why a lot of the power comes from his abs.

Something interesting to see that stroke style and technique is second to knowing how to win the match and we’re seeing that with Norrie, Brooksby, Medvedev and guys like Mannarino. Starting to make me second guess my obsession with technique esp, at the rec level.

On of the reason not to be underestimated is that Federer, by dominating people so much used to play many more games and sets per years! So by playing more game, of course he gets to do more ace... In ace quantity, he is 3rd. In ace % he is 89th... With 10%. This is as I explained, he played so much more. In term of Set won he is first with 4040, Nadal is 2nd with 3216 and Djokivic is 3rd with 3152. In comparison, Karlovic is 82nd with 1859...

The fact that the fastest servers aren't the best tennis players should give you an idea of why Federer sacrifices a little bit of pace for accuracy and spin. Yeah, he also follows the serve with superior play compared to the fastest servers, but that isn't the only reason he's much more successful. He hits a ton of aces. In fact, he's in the top 5 for aces. Clearly, he's speed isn't the only factor for aces and winning matches.

Honestly Federer has insane shoulder flexibility. You need to be very flexible in the shoulder to come out from such a big turn in his very closed platform stance. That's also the reason I wouldn't suggest serving like that if you simply don't have the mobility in your shoulder, which most players don't. Federer is a freak in that manner

Federer is my favorite player, but has I commented. The reason why federer has so many aces is simply because he played SO MANY games because he was winning all the time :)

Arguably The best serve in men's tennis over the last 30 years was Pete Sampras. His second serve was the best ever!

One of the reasons that the Sampras serve was so special was because he used a single toss which drifted across his body so where the ball was going depended on when he hit it.

Whoa. Stopped at 1:16. Federer doesn't have shoulder flexibility? Besides Novak he's right there. All the intangibles you mentioned about Federer's serve, you didn't mention placement. That's his biggest weapon. He's not 6'4 or over. 6'1 is not exactly short. Federer like a lot of players these days substitute the flat power serve for the slice. Also like other players, he can crank it up in the high 130s low 140s if he need to🤔
