Solid review, and Savage World's flexibility may be its greatest quality. It really can do it all.

It really was kind of a Holy Grail of games for me. I tried all the Universal systems I could find, GURPS, Cypher, Genesys, and a wide variety of others. Each has their advantages, but I always thought they had specific genres they were distinctly better at. Savage Worlds could do a good job at anything I threw at it.

As Hasbro/Wizards will never again make a game for it I'd love to see them sell Dark Sun to Savage Worlds. That would be so perfect.

I love this take, and while it will never happen, it could have a “spiritual successor” in Savage Worlds. The Savage Worlds system with the Fantasy Companion is already quite capable of handling the material.

How apropos - I was holding the SWAD codebook in my hand at my FLGS only yesterday! I ran a ton of SW from 2015 to 2016 (almost exclusively). SW was dynamic enough for me to run a Supernatural/Buffy/X-Files campaign, a Supers campaign, and some fantasy.

It really is pretty impressive what you get in your core rules “kit”. I feel like character design is flexible enough that you could legitimately create any hero you could imagine with very minimal reskins, right from the core book… without being bogged down with rules minutiae or complicated sub systems like you get in a Champions or similar system.

@@booksbricksandboards783 It was phenomenal for making and playing Supers, Justin. It plays lean, clean, and doesn't have the laborious character creation system like other Supers systems. The older my friends, brothers, and I get, the "more narrative/less crunchy" games have become appealing to us. SW left an indelible influence on me: I implement bennies in every game I run regardless of system (i.e. making a magical bauble in my DCC campaign that provides 2 bennies a day to the wearer) and plan to employ them in my upcoming Stars Without Number sandbox sessions. Additionally, I've used the card initiative system in other systems to spice things up. I think your video (and my reminiscing of the system) has convinced to pickup the SWAD, haha.

Lol. Well I am glad that I am helping you rediscover a lost gaming memory. Just played a session of my TMNT game with my 4 and 13 year olds this afternoon (using SWADE). It is something I could not accomplish with any other system. That alone makes it worth it for me!

Fantastic video - There's actually a Savage Worlds Adventure's Guild product with a toolkit for Saturday Morning Cartoons specifically like TMNT called, "Big Apple Sewer Samurai." It might have a few more useful edges and setting rules for you and your kids' game.

I actually DO have Big Apple Sewer Samurai. It was a good take on the genre, I just decided to use core rules to keep it a bit simpler for the boys and I both (our first SWADE game).

OMG I loved TMNT RPG. However, the %checks for everything along with the wall of text/too many options meant no one wanted to play it. I would love to see how you use savage worlds to play TMNT.

Thanks, been a rough day and I love seeing your comment! Maybe when I get some time I can get a solo run on camera for the channel. The short version is, the SWADE core rules EASILY handle the characters, mutations and powers, between the Edges and the race creation rules, combined with the cinematic combat style, I have created all the turtles, as well as many enemies from the books. Thanks for watching!

Since you played both...what are pro / cons of SW vs Cypher?
@booksbricksandboards783
@booksbricksandboards783 3 ай бұрын
I have played and ran Savage Worlds. I have only ran Cypher System, though I did create the pre gen characters for the adventures I wrote. Savage Worlds handles combat much more tactically, and generally crunches numbers in a more satisfying way. Everything in Cypher is a bit more abstracted and requires a little more descriptive narrative to tell the story of the actions. Both are good systems. On the surface, Cypher character creation SEEMS much more streamlined than SWADE, but in practice, unless the players want to really master the system and figure out what all the options do and how to get to them via the requirements, Cypher in practice is harder to get to do what you want. SWADE is, conceptually an easier teach, a more mechanically satisfying experience, and more able to mold to your liking in my opinion. If I were going to run a modern detective or horror game, I’d probably run Cypher… anything else I’d just play SWADE.

Well I bought Deadlands when it came (circa 96/97). Loves at first sight. And quite modular as I always have people deep into western wanting something more westerny (with ranches, bad guys, duels, a la John Wayne) and not too "Zombies and creatures". Savage world is... the kind of system I totally ADORE. The only exception being Deadlands which I orefer running on Old Deadlands for the rest this is such a fantastic system.

@pralinor

@@booksbricksandboards783 Classic is more flavoured. by that i mean the western ambiance is far deeper ingrained in the ruleset. Once I say that: tons of western are on the small vs helluva. Like the Magnificent seven, Rio Bravo, etc. And Classic splendidely fail to capture that, the combat system is cumbersum, detailed, gory and painfully slow. for duels in the street, where speed is totally irrelvant, bloody awesome. For charge of the bad guys in the town on horses with guns blazzing... Totally another story. Swade (reloaded so) is less flavoured, does a couple of things worst but it is a better system. Not to mention you can use it for tons of other games !

It truly is pretty amazing. Can’t wait for my hard copies of Horror and Fantasy companions (and the Advanced Player’s Guide). One of my Pathfinder players that has only picked up one book in over 3 years, has already picked up the PF Savage World rules (6 months or more in advance of our transition to the new system). Which is to say, yes, it is the best!

$15 Wal Mart laminator. Standard laminate sheets. I used the tent style sheets from the PEG website for Wild Cards and a fan made Ally sheet created for Weird War 2. I then cut down to size and send back through the laminator to seal them.

@@danacoleman4007 I had a recent experience that started off rather bad, but then improved at the end. Pre ordered the Fantasy Companion, they didn't ship. I emailed because they really never indicated when to expect shipment. I saw it was available on a few retail sites. They responded that it was a glitch in their preorder process that comes up "occasionally". Since I had preordered the Horror Companion as well, I asked if they could make sure to keep an eye on that one so it didn't get delayed by a couple months. They said they couldn't due to their current system. Just take my chances. Then when they finally shipped the Fantasy Companion, the firs 72 pages were glued together damaging the book. They were pretty prompt this time about getting a replacement shipped (haven't got it yet, but got notice). I really feel any of the bad experiences are related to the size of the staff and limitations of a small company. Seem like good folks that make great games.
