Alex Salmond, Scottish First Minister and leader of the Yes campaign, has conceded defeat in the independence referendum.
It follows a campaign of more than two years - during which time the No campaign had consistently led in the polls.
Their arguments had previously focused on the economic and financial risks of independence - with the Chancellor George Osborne ruling in February of this year that Scotland could not use the pound of the currency if they voted yes, and the former Chancellor Alastair Darling capitalising on this in debates with Alex Salmond.
It was only during the later stages of the campaign that Westminster politicians began to make the emotional case for the Union - with both David Cameron and Gordon Brown speaking passionately about the United Kingdom in the days leading up to the vote.
The former Prime Minister also promised that Scotland would gain enhanced powers even if they voted No - that process of further devolution will now begin.
