Many seniors have financial issues, with some facing old debts such as student #debt. But the government protects seniors from certain types of debt. Federal law protects your Social Security payments, pensions, and retirement funds. There are even little-known laws that protect seniors' bank accounts. Debt collectors may be bothersome, but you can send them packing through various means that don't require you to pay them. Protected Social Security, pensions, disability and VA benefits can be used for your needs, helping you to find financial peace of mind. The HELPS Non-Profit Law Firm, based in Salem, Oregon, provides ongoing legal representation for purposes of communicating with debt collectors, serving clients in all 50 U.S. states. Once you retain HELPS, debt collectors can no longer call or send letters. Attorney Eric Olsen, Executive Director of the HELPS Non-profit Law Firm, explains why seniors may never have to pay certain debts, and how HELPS can help you even if you don't retain their services.

@@allennoble9261 credit cards can get a Court judgement against you but cannot garnish your SS or pension so depending on how much money you have they may be able to go after your earnings. Most won't sue unless it is a high dollar amount over 10K or 15K. It usually isn't even the credit card company they just write it off and report it as income to the IRS but companies buy these debts for pennies on the dollar and then sue.

A piece of advice that I've learned. If your debt is turned over to a collection agency never ever pick up the phone or respond to any letter from a collection agency. They may be able to keep calling you or sending letters but as long as you don't answer the debt does not have to be paid. After 7 years it'll go off your record.

I constantly see in social media that people under 30 have this strange idea that Seniors are just sitting around with huge bank accounts. My Dad is 81, he was a "contract employee" when he was told he didn't need to come to work the next day. No cake, no gold watch , absolutely no severance - just "you're 65, bye!' My parents live on their social security. It's terrifying. I've been disabled for 28 years and can't work. We've always wanted to do the right thing, pay the bills, but they have been scammed, Mom always handled the money and she has Alzheimer's. It is sickening that these good, hard working people who really could use help (someone to clean twice a month? No money for that), but I have no idea how to get that for them. Seniors deserve respect, not harassment. Thanks for this, I'll look at the website.

Everyone Needs to know this, my husband is 70 and has just finished treatment for cancer, it's very difficult paying all the medical bills on top of household bills.And credit card bills. All of our credit is basically in his name and he's worried about losing our Good Credit Rating, as well as the fact that he has to go for frequent check-ups because of the cancer, or because it's left him with issues he may incur more medical bills while we're struggling to pay all the ones we already have because of the cancer. I hope you won't mind responding and give me much needed advice.I know we aren't the only ones dealing with these types of problems. Bless you for the work you are doing to help us Seniors, because most of us have no idea what to do. As majority of us have worked all our adult years and Always paid our debts.

After a terrible 2022, shell-shocked financial backers have a lot to think about and losses to recover from. An expansion report and a wealth of other data did little to alter assumptions that the Central bank would likely keep raising interest rates regardless of whether the economy slows down. This implies that portfolios will experience more losses during the first quarter of 2023. I'm currently at a crossroads deciding whether to exchange my $250k security/stock portfolio; how might the continuous market volatility work to my advantage?

@Chimonger1
@Chimonger1 3 жыл бұрын
The tricky bit, is getting accurate records copies from providers. ESPECIALLY if you entered the care system via the emergency room. One must literally request an itemized billing--most never give you those. THEN, you need to scrutinize the billings, and QUESTION any items you think don't belong. That might need sitting with a hospital social worker or nurse or billing office, to explain the items on the bill to you. THEN you have to fill out a form to contest the wrong items, and request they be removed. Pitfalls of this: The providers KNOW they can easily buffalo patients and their families. It happens ALL THE TIME, pretty much everywhere I've ever worked, in 2 States, and heard plenty from others who've worked in other States. --> OFTEN, records are lies, both flagrant and of omission....not only of what was done, but what supplies got charged to your bill. --> WORSE...if you experience an adverse reaction to any treatment, those are mostly NOT charted, UNLESS they cannot avoid it. Most patients and their families are CLUELESS of adverse reactions. Most, IF they are charted, are made to appear as entirely different "problems", given Diagnosis Codes making SYMPTOMS into stand-alone diagnoses of their own--which is very wrong---but that is one big reason why healthcare has become so derailed from healing. That applies to at least the last 40 years of vaccine adverse reactions, drug or other treatment reactions whether in or out of a hospital or office. Then there's all that split billing from individual providers. [lost typing due to gargle glitch] The USA is one of THE MOST COSTLY countries to live in, specifically for health care of any kind. Medicines, surgeries, treatments, everything, is charged at the highest prices. INSURANCE industries and PHARMA industries, have made the US healthcare system what it is: extremely, unrealistically costly, and, got laws passed long ago, limiting Docs to only diagnosing, not curing. No one can legally claim they have cured anything. Docs are legally restricted to use only "poison, cut, burn" [drugs, surgery, radiation]. The reference books for Diagnoses codes, and for drugs, have grown exponentially in size, more because Pharma has made a huge business of reinventing thousands of Symptoms, into stand-alone "Disease", because they have invented drugs for those. And medical devices. etc. The feedback loops that determine how much, and when, prices get raised, is truly Machiavellian. Kinda like Tax laws.

Michael I'm sad you seem to have felt pressured to do the only friends route with the phone. I believe Seniors do live within their means as much as best they can, he seems to understand this.. Huge Companies , but especially the Government's part, don't seem to get better. Often the worst . Happy New Year for 2021 and I send this greeting. out to all of the people who might be reading this. What brought you to this part during the Pandemic on New Year ? Good luck. I saw a post from a so called professional on here doling out advice, and making some assumptions which I believed to be wrong or misleading. . If you see something, say something. There I've said it ------Again !

Hi I have been registered with Helps for atleast 2 years. I am not a senior citizen but I am disable...they helped me stop a garnishment from my school loans. They also helped me with my IRS problems. I was very pleased with their program. This company is very knowledgeable & there customer service is excellent & they return calls & follow up the same day/the next day. This is a real testimony 😊. I would refer anybody to the Helos organization. I was able to keep a piece of mind through challenging times

@@jewels7139 yes Julie. Helps actually helped me apply for Non collectible status...I believe it's also called the 53 status. They did a conference called & notified IRS that they will be representing me...After that helps gave ne information on filing for a medical discharge.The school loan was waived & I was placed in non collectible status. Helps assistamce made me stop living in fear😊. I eventually was Brave enough to fill out the forms for a offer in compromise & I am presently waiting for a answer. IRS said to expect a decision around Feb 2. Helos Org ... actually took a tremendous amount of stress off my shoulder & made me tackle my fears. I just want to add on...I filled out the offer in compromise forms myself & irs walk me through the process. BY the way I felt comfortable enough to ask irs lots of questions & they were quite helpful. I wish everybody all the best on their economic journey. Happy New Year

They need to make a law that collection agencies can’t sell your account. I have credited card companies sending nasty letters to get me to pay for my deceased father’s credit cards. Fortunately I know I’m not responsible. My Dad had no estate, he lived me, and no will and no executor. I received a small Life Insurance policy that paid for funeral expenses. They can’t take Life Insurance monies. So they’re sucking air and I file 13 all their corespondents.

@@karenraynor8562 I have actually spoken with them on the phone and sent them copies of his death certificate. It’s a tactic that they use to try to scare family into paying for their deceased parent’s debts. Not to worry it’s a waste of time on me. Like I said I file 13 everything they send. I suspect they will eventually stop sending. They even tried to say they could take “the” house to assume it was my Dad’s. No it’s my house in my name and they can’t touch it. It’s just very sad that there is so much dishonesty out there and there are some people that they can scare and intimidate into giving them money. Money that is legally not theirs.

@@marthasavage4129 check your state laws and an attorney... if those letters are from creditors DEMANDING that YOU make payment upon your deceased fathers unsecure debt.... you might be able to sue them. In my state, it is UNLAWFUL for a creditor to go after OTHERS for a debt... and if they send letters, telephone calls and the Like demanding payment, we can SUE them in our state. If memory serves me correctly, in my state, they are also fined $7,000.00 by the state attorney general for each contact/demand of payment... One of the nations biggest cases against such unethical credit collections was won in my state... making the poor family very wealthy...

not quite correct. if you do not or can not pay a bill, credit card... the credit card company is obligated by law to charge off the account after 180 days soooo you may after this time receive a statement from a "collector"... do you have a contract with the "collector" NO YOU DO NOT. but you must reply within 30 days so...YOU MUST NOT PAY ONE CENT but contact your attorney who you will NOT have to pay...If the collector calls and want you to pay just tell them: I WILL DEAL WITH THIS BUT IN WRITING ONLY. THEN CONTACT AN ATTORNEY WHO DEALS WITH COLLECTORS... YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID.

Just found your Chanel. My 82 yr old mother lives with my sister who cares for her. I take care of her finances. She literally lives on a social security check. Most of her expenses are medical related. She was so close to being denied chemo a couple years ago. She makes about $100 dollars too much to qualify for the states Medicaid as a secondary insurance. She has had several falls, broken bones, surgery and therapy. Therapy a couple times a week is so expensive. I do pay her medical portion but this is good information to know . Thank you.
