Hey everyone! Just a quick demo on why I feel Sennelier oil pastels are the best you can get. I'm working on a 100% Sennelier oil pastel painting of an Autumn Scene. This is on Art Spectrum sanded paper.
I will be doing a full tutorial on 100% Sennelier OP painting sometime soon.
Happy Holidays!
Rich

It's because they crreeaamyyy. They got that butter, coffee cream, crisco smoothness. The magic is real. I've built a collection of these and every time I use them, it's incredible. Great video Rich! Your shadows and light work are inspiring.

Senns + sanded paper is my favorite combination. Now if you want to cut in some really fine detail, try a sgraffito-like technique, but use Faber Castell Polychromos colored pencils instead of a stylus. The pencil will cut through the pastels down to the sanded paper which will then pick up the pigment from the pencil.

Interesting. I do have a set of the polychromos, but havent tried them in the way you're describing. Sounds fun. Thanks!

Your painting is gorgeous. I agree that using 100% Sennelier is magical. It works wonderfully on to of other brands. But I think Sennelier truly shines when used on its own.

Hey, Rich! Great video! Do you find that the sanded surface helps better with layering Sennelier? I mostly use Neopastels, and also mostly use Bristol Smooth or sometimes Stonehenge Legion paper. I sometimes find Sennelier to be a bit too slick on these papers, and when I try to layer them they can quickly turn into a mess if I mess with them too much. Would a sanded paper help with that? Also just wanted to say that I'm a big fan of your art! I loved oil pastels growing up, so when I decided to get back into them as an adult I scoured the internet for every single thing I could possibly read on them, and I saw that you are super active in the oil pastel community. Your videos are so helpful! Thank you so much for being so generous with your knowledge and spreading the joy of oil pastels with other artists. I know I'm not the only one you've helped and inspired, so thank you!! Happy Holidays 😊

Hello! And thank you 🙏🏼. Sanded surface definitely helps. Although I have used 100% sennelier on Bristol smooth paper before. Takes a bit more patience and careful blending on that. Sometimes just letting the oil pastel sit for a couple days allows for more layers when things get slick. I haven’t really experienced that with sennelier though. Some sennelier sticks are softer than others . Certain colors that is. But overall, I feel they out perform the other brands. Neopastels are also great. I use them quite a bit. Thanks for watching and I’m happy if any of this helps. 😁

I can definitely see where patience and careful blending come in! I think what sometimes throws me off is the transparency of some colors (which is of course great for some things) and that using a blending stump on them on the smooth paper can make them super streaky and I feel like sometimes lift up some layers of colors if that makes sense. So, careful blending needed indeed!! I think I've got this working process down with Neopastel that works well for me, but the Senneliers work a little bit differently and I just need to learn to adapt to them. I'll keep playing with them! I may just not have given them enough of a chance to like them more than Neopastel yet lol. Also letting them set up for a few days is a great point. Thanks for the advice!! 😄

@@ShannonRadelatArt oh yeah, I’ve had that same problem with blending on the Bristol smooth. Too much pressure will definitely move out the oil pastel right down to the paper. I really have to use light pressure and pretty much “move” the oil pastel to where I want it. It’s taken some practice to figure out how much force to use.
