This is the first real explanation video on why you should hunt for turkeys with TSS shells instead of Lead. There are detailed explanations, science, math, and even some kill shots. But in the end you really understand why there is such a rage over the Tungsten Super Shot.

There are two reasons to shoot tss. 1 sub gauges. 2 hunting areas that don’t allow lead. Other than that shoot lead. Winchester long beard XR’s are the best lead round on the market. I wish they made it in 10 gauge. So with all that being said why don’t you sell .410 and 28 gauge TSS? There are multiple 410’s on the market that are specifically designed for turkey hunting.

Had 163 #5 pellets in a 16" circle at 60 yards the other day with Long Beard XR. 5 patterns better than #4 or 6. A 2 oz load of #9 TSS has 794 pellets. 2 oz of #9 lead has 1170. Lead shot has 47% more shot than TSS, and is just as Lethel unless you are shooting really long ranges. In which you will likely end up killing more than one turkey with all the fly outs. Not to mention picking all the shot out of the bird. I'm still undecided on TSS. I've taken 3 turkeys over 60 yards (62,63,64 yds) with Long Beards. Won't go lower than #5 shot. But you still made a good video.

Ok I agree with Paul Shumate I shoot the Winchester Longbeard . And I have shot the Remington Nitro witch I didn`t like . Everyone of the test you did up to 50 yrds that Turkey would have been DEAD with the Remington load also . And I know if you want to shoot what you call the best then the price will have to come down although I have only heard what just the 410 TSS shells cost and it wasn`t cheep by no means . To me the joy of Turkey hunting is to call that big Gobbler in as close as possible not to shoot him out there 60 / 70 yrds . And one final word I have never lost a Turkey that I have shot at but I do admit that I had to shoot at one twicethat was because it was a new gun with a tight chock and I missed him at 8 yrds. and nailed him at 30 yrds . You get a thumbs up still

I just patterned Longbeard #4s (Mossberg Turkey Choke) and TSS #9 (used Carlson TSS Choke) at 35 yards and really is not even close. While both shells did deliver killing shots, the TSS put 35-40+ lethal hits per shot whereas my best longbeard shot put 8-10. Now maybe I could use a tighter longbeard choke, but TSS gave me a bigger, denser spread with way more shot. Not to mention that Longbeard pattern isn't getting any denser further out. To each their own and I understand finances are different for people, but once I start thinking about tags, gear, and gas money an extra $50 doesnt seem ridiculous for the extra confidence I have in not worrying about crippling one up

4:00 Your discussion of relative surface areas may or may not be relevant. As the size of a sphere increases, it's surface area also increases but not as fast as it's volume. The #5 shot has more volume for its surface area than the #9 shot. If both shot are lead, or tungsten, the smaller shot will be more affected by air drag than the larger shot. That's why dust particles can float in the air. They have very high surface area compared to their weight. To compare #9 tungsten to #5 lead, you would have to determine the surface areas of the two shot sizes and their weights, then calculate their weight to surface area ratios. Even that may not tell the whole story. I'm no physicist. On the other hand, your target tests are pretty darn convincing. On the other hand, I don't shoot past 40 yards. Any decent lead load does the job.

Not to take away from TSS, because it truly is superior, but this is a point that is often missed. The only way to get more pellets per ounce is to have pellets that weigh less. At some point, you have to start thinking about the energy that each pellet holds at the distance you're wanting to shoot. A #9 TSS pellet does, in fact, weigh less than a #5 lead pellet. That being said, the #9 pellet is ballistically superior and will hold more energy downrange. How far can a #9 TSS go before it won't penetrate reliably? I haven't found that answer yet. What I do know is that a #6 lead pellet will kill at 50-55 yards with a MV of 1200fps, making 50 yards easy with a 3.5" gun. If you want to go further than that, you have to look at TSS and find which pellet will do what you need.

@@mikelhardin3869 the claim I've heard is that it carries more energy at a specified distance. You can look at pellet counts and tell that it's not heavier than a #5 or it wouldn't have more pellets in each shell. What's harder to verify is that downrange energy number. For me, it's really splitting hairs. Federal #7 TSS is a solid 60 yard round for me and I killed a bird at 70 when I misjudged the distance.

@@CamaroZ28Nut3 I have shot many turkeys in the 15 to 25 yards range. I have shot them on the ground and in flight as they took to the sky. The reason Winchester came up with the Long Beards is for longer shots. Up until I found out about them, I only took a couple of turkeys over 50 yards once in awhile,. Namely because they refused to come any closer or it was too wide open. Talk about visibility. I practice long shooting. I work on reloads. I even have one more potent than Long Beard. It takes skill in many areas to do what I have been doing: taking turkeys over 60 yards consistently. My shot last year was closer, and I took it because I was running out of time available for me to hunt. It was only 54 yards. Had I waited, it would have only been around 20 yards. Watch my video on it. You will see me pass up the chance for a double because where I was hunting I was only able to take one bird. You will also see me wait until the other two there could not be injured by stray pellets. Which by the way, I have taken many doubles at less than 20 yards. Doubles, that means two in one shot, not two in two shots. A few years ago I used my Browning Citori over under, and took two in one shot and a second one with the second shot. 3 birds, in two shots, less than 10 yards away. Tell me it doesn't take skill to do what I do. And by the way, for your misinformation, In the old days people shot turkeys out of the trees from early evening to early morning. Many were shot with rifles and not shotguns, even in daylight hours. How skilled is that? Some states still allow rifles to be used as well as shotguns. There was none of this B.S. of sitting around with a call squawking all day back then. That has only happened since turkey seasons were created and came under management. If I want to exercise my skills and take a 60 yards shot, then I can do it. Even if I pass up a 20 yards shot to do it. I've taken 3 over 60: 62, 63, and 64 yards. All were one shot drops. Let's see you do it, and then you can see just how hard it is to set up for such a shot.

I've walked up and stood still and had turkeys all around me waiting for the big one to get close. That's when I shoot them out of the air because they jump up and fly when Iam that close to them. But the people who don't listen and think I am dong it all wrong, go year after year without filling their tags. Some have even quit because they think it's too hard to get a turkey. (doing it their way) Statistics show 70 percent of turkey hunters who run and gun, will fill a tag. Ironically, 70 percent of those who sit and call will not. Look it up.

You're using pattern density to compare equal weights #9 shot and #5 shot. Even with different materials the results are pretty predictable. A more honest comparison of density differences would be equal weights of #9 TSS and #9 lead. The lead will have the denser pattern because it will have the higher pellet count per unit weight. If the TSS is more dense than lead, then you would have more pellets in 2.25 oz. of #9 lead than you would in 2.25 oz. of #9 TSS. What is that difference in that pellet count?

Wow we have some cheapo hunters in the comments. Guys will drive a $40k truck and complain about $10 sells ha. I shoot Winchester long beard xr and they are great shells, but why not give ourselves every advantage, to make a clean kill. I'll be shooting both Federal TSS and Ninja TSS this spring.

Those are some good patterns but I harvested a gobbler last fall at 78.7 yards. I was shooting Win. LB Extended Range 3" #4's with a Carlson choke tube designed for that load. I've done extensive pattern testing myself; I know my shotgun inside and out. I shoot a Win. Super X-3 topped with a Leupold 2 X 7 scope. The name of my gun is the Undertaker. The Turkinator

No lie TSS is way better but it cost an arm and a leg to shoot. I also live in California which means lead is not legal to shoot, so I'm shooting bismuth right now but if I'm not satisfied then I'll go to the federal TSS #9. But for right now it's doing a great job a 40 yd.s

Math is not computing? 2.25 oz in 400 or 800 pellets. The number 9's have to weigh about half as much each then, not more??? The smaller size would help their long range velocity, but their lower weight per pellet would hurt it. Not sure what wins. I would just chromo it at 50 yards if I wanted to know the truth. The real value seems to be pattern density in favor of the 9s at perhaps "similar" energy (E~MC but mass would seem more important as it is not the squared term). Not sure the other points hold quite the implied significance.

A #9 TSS pellet is heavier than a #5 lead pellet
@derekbeyers8804
@derekbeyers8804 4 жыл бұрын
I agree the #9 TSS weigh about 1.2gr and the #5 lead weigh about 2.5gr. The #9 TSS is closer to weighing the same as #7.5 lead. you could have a lot more steel pellets than lead in 2.25 oz because pellet weight is lighter. Now as far as density the #9 TSS probably more superior because of their density. Pellet count is impressive but need actual gel penetration to prove it's more lethal

I sure hope we will all be able to choose the Turkey loads for this years Turkey Season. If Biden and his Cronies have their way we may never have to worry about what size shot or bullets we want to use for any hunting. We all need to stay together and fight for our rights to keep our firearms and ammo. Time to really look at all the politicians that want to change our constitution and take away our rights. Time to get them out of office.
