Fun Fact: Adidas is a German company that also made anti-tank weapons during WW2 for Germany, and the only reason the factory wasn't destroyed and the workers arrested is that the owners wife managed to convince the American forces occupying the area that they only made sports shoes and not weapons, then the American forces became frequent buyers and things took off from there. Also, the name of the founder of Adidas is Adolf "Adi" Dassler.

im from east Germany and i remember ,my parents talking about how GDR police used to caught people trying smuggle western things into the east .My youngest uncle 43 years of age was a GDR police officer he told me that sometimes western students would trade western things for eastern things ,like books for example turned out Shakespeare and other novels were extremely cheap to get in the east block so western student flocked to get cheap books for their studies .

True, my dad who lived in the Soviet Union said that the locally produced Converse All Star copies, called "keds" or "kedi" were usually of bad taste, everybody hated them, and so those who had outside connections and got their hands on some Adidas sneakers, were considered gods. My dad recalls, "we'd go nuts if we someone with those three stripes on their shoes"
