Harry Potter Theory

Күн бұрын

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re discussing Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, and the events of the Half-Blood Prince. More specifically- we’re going to be diving in to the iconic and emotional scene where Snape ends the life of Hogwarts’ loveable headmaster- Albus Dumbledore. Diving in further, we’re going to be analyzing Snape’s murder of Dumbledore, and honing in on one peculiar aspect pertaining to the colour of Snape’s spell.
Starting all the way at the beginning- we know that Dumbledore’s death was pre-ordained, it had to happen, and he was going to die anyway- that’s why Dumbledore enlisted the help of Snape to kill him.
“If you don’t mind dying,” said Snape roughly, “why not let Draco do it?”
“That boy’s soul is not yet so damaged,” said Dumbledore. “I would not have it ripped apart on my account.”
As per the rule of the unbreakable vow that Snape had made with Narcissa regarding Draco, Snape was responsible for taking action on Draco’s part in the event that Draco was unable. So by killing Dumbledore himself, Snape was effectively saving Draco, and doing Dumbledore a favour. This did however, leave Snape with the daunting task of killing the man that he had grown to like- the man that took him in after Snape defected from the Death Eaters.
When the time comes, and Snape is facing Dumbledore with his wand out at the top of the Astronomy tower- he finally releases the spell that ends Dumbledore. We can very clearly see that Snape used the most effective method of killing known to the Harry Potter story- avada kedavra, the killing curse. The killing curse is one of the three unforgivable curses- curses that are ‘unforgivable’ because of their sadistic nature. Avada kedavra’s purpose is simple, it causes the victim to instantly die. If you want to kill your victim, then this is the spell to use. The spell creates a blindingly intense green bolt of light right before the victim simply drops dead.
But what’s curious about Snape’s particular avada kedavra (and this is only in the film, so take from it what you will) is that when it strikes Dumbledore, it isn’t the green that we’re accustomed to, it’s far more of a blue. I found significance in this moment because it’s re-iterated again and again that avada kedavra is a ‘green’ jet of light- so why was it so blue? The meanings behind spell colours in Harry Potter are never properly explained, but last week I made a theory video where I discuss potential relationships between spell colours and their meanings. In this video, I outline that for a spell to be produced in it’s ‘truest’ form, the spell requires intent- and the spell must be used for the purpose for which it was made. By this logic, someone producing an expelliarmus properly, and for the right reason, would produce a pure-unwaivering red colour from the tip of their wand. The same goes for avada kedavra- if used accurately and for the right reason, producing an unwavering ‘green’ jet of light.
So, my theory for Snape’s ‘blue’ spell is this- he had regret. In order to produce avada kedavra, or any of the unforgivable curses for that matter, it requires ‘intent’, and it’s generally suggested that the degree of intent will determine how successful the spell is. My thought is that Snape had JUST enough intent to kill Dumbledore, but not enough to produce the spell in its purest form. This would explain why the spell colour waivered from the traditional ‘green’.
Snape didn’t want to kill Dumbledore, but he knew that he had to, so- being the pragmatic man that he is, he got the task done. However, that certainly doesn’t mean that he ever wanted to kill him- it was the last thing that Snape wanted to do, he just knew that it was the ‘right’ thing to do.
What do you guys think of this theory? Let me know in the comment section below
Until next time

Throughout the series, everyone knew Snape carried all of the heaviest burdens. When you have to be a spy for both sides, it becomes effectively tasking. Physically and mentally. I felt bad for him ever since the 1st film, when he tried to counter the curse that Quirrel was casting on Harry’s broom. The man lived through so much discrimination even though he was a good guy 😢

I don't think he was purely a good guy, since his main motivation was the obsession he had for Harry's mother. I don't think he ever truly cared for Harry, he even said to Dumbledore that it always was because of his "love" for Lilly and he truly despised Potter, who Harry reminded him of all the time.

No one can be “pure” good. We always have that slight bit of bad in us, but Snape still is the most honorable out of all the wizards. Think about it, this guy is part of the reason Voldemort didn’t succeed. Had he spilled the beans on how the Elder Wand works, all would’ve been toast. He did everything he was asked to do, and didn’t ask for any recognition. The guy is a legend, unlike Dumbledore, who just manipulated and strung everyone along. Sure he saw a bigger picture, but you gotta admit, if we’re speaking on terms of evil, Dumbledore is almost as bad as Voldemort 🤷‍♂️

The spell colour is for the intent. Snape did not kill to murder. He killed for mercy. It was a mercy killing to prevent corrupting Draco's soul as well as not to blow both Draco and Snape's cover. Everyone was so focus on carrying out the death of Dumbledore that they missed the fact that the colour has changed. Just a thought: this would also explain why in the 4th book (or movie, I forget which), when Moody is teaching the students about the Unforgivable Curses, he says that even if every student in the room pointed their wands at him and said "avada kedavra", he would "hardly get a nosebleed" (or something along those lines, its been a while haha). It isn't simply that the students wouldn't have been powerful enough wizards to produce the curse, but that it is very unlikely any of them would have really wanted to kill Moody in that moment.

@@doodoowater5282 there's a pretty in depth video somewhere out there, basically the shortest way to explain is that Harry's mother casted a sort of protection in Harry when she sacrificed herself for him through love, the protection continued throughout the film until he was 17, then it was extended until the moment of his death because Voldemorts body spell used Harry's blood (which holds the love protection). Harry and Voldemort are connected so it killed Harry (Voldemort's horcrux), but not Harry himself.

I feel like it was blueish in the film so that people that were sharp-witted would pick up on the fact that it wasn't a normal killing curse. Blue often symbolises peace, freedom or tranquillity and most crucially for Snape I think is Loyalty, Sincerity and Faith. Snape's killing curse may have came out as a blueish green because he trusted it was the right thing to do. And that his killing curse wasn't out of anger or any other negative emotion.

I like the idea of the spell's color reflecting the intention behind it. As in, if it's cast with malice, the spell is green, but when used for mercy, it could be blue, for example. Avada Kedavra leaves no trace, it's not painful at all which means it could be the purest form of coup de grâce. Snape used it to end Dumbledore's life out of mercy, it might just be that since it's forbidden and associated with dark wizards (and probbaly it's used with malice for like 99% of the time) that there's no mention of it being blue when cast with different intention.

My guess is that since Snape already knew Dumbledore was going to die from the curse Snape had slowed down earlier in the year. We know Dumbledore's hand was shriveled. Perhaps killing Dumbledore was merciful. Also, Snape knew Dumbledore had to die so he did have the intent but it wasn't malicious intent. He had pure intentions which changed the spell color to a gentle blue.

If you watch the scene carefully you can see it's actually green with a bluish hue. The only reason it looks blue in the movie is because of the film's color palette, Half-Blood Prince has the darkest color grading out of all of the HP movies.

This is the answer. I'm not even watching the video as it's pure clickbait but I did come here to make this point lol! It's blueish because of colour grading. You can easily tell that it's green within the context of the entire movie it's just tinted by the grading. I really love Harry Potter but you can tell this channel is stretching the material available to them, and people here are wildly overthinking everything as they grasp to keep holding onto a now ended, albeit great, franchise.

One of two things of why the spell was blue. 1. The lighting of the scene is dark, so it wouldn't make sense to see a full scale green, but a blue tint to it considering the background colors. 2. The CGI artist didnt put that much detail into that one spot on the scene since people don't typically freeze frame movies.

With how powerful and talented Snape was, could it possibly be that he just uttered the words “Avada Kedavra” with no intent to it, while at the same time using a non verbal spell to kinda stun Dumbledore and send him flying over the banister and fall to the ground? That way it could look like the killing curse killed Dumbledore, but to Snape it would have been more of an accidental killing to not affect his soul, or killing in a more pure hearted form than the killing curse

Before watching: My theory is that he cast a different spell. The killing curse requires the caster to actually _want_ the target dead, which Snape presumably did not. Also Snape is competent at silent casting, so he could have cast one spell silently, while saying the words for another. That would in fact be a great technique for duels. The only issue with this would be, that if the spell did not kill Dumbledore, it would be quite obvious. Luckily, Dumbledore immediately fell off a tower, thus making such check impossible. Perhaps Snape used a spell that pushes, rather than kills.

If you lack the true intent and hatred, the curse will just knock the person down at most. We see a similar example in book 5 when Harry tries to use an Unforgivable Curse on Bellatrix after she killed Sirius and all it does is knock her over. She then laughs saying Harry doesnt have the hatred and desire to flick suffering in his heart for it to work. The movie just wanted to be different. Stick to the book

Voldemort is a master Legiliment. The only reason he couldn't peg Snape as a mole is because Snape, himself is a master Occlument.

Absolutely accurate. Furthermore, while it's only been speculated, wands are "alive." They (the wands) choose their witches and wizards. They also "learn" from their owners, often adapting spells and effects to suit the mindset, personality, and emotions of their owners. SO, I would say that in addition to the Avada Kedavera curse that Severus Snape cast on Dumbledore not being at full power/effect due to Severus's intent not really being present to kill; but Severus's wand also knew this and didn't wish to kill Dumbledore either. Honestly, I wouldn't have been surprised if Severus's Avada Kedavera didn't actually work. Instead, what actually killed Dumbledore being a combination of the Horcrux Curse and the fall from Dumbledore's tower onto the cobblestone below. Logic, Reason, and Rationality states: 1) Albus Dumbledore absolutely would have died no matter what. With or without Severus Snap intervening. Either by A) the Horcrux Curse, B) Bellatrix LeStrange, C) Draco Malfoy, or D) the fall. 2) Dumbledore knew that Severus made an Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa Malfoy. If Severus and/or Draco failed to kill Dumbledore, then Dumbledore, Severus, AND Draco would have died. 3) Draco Malfoy had not yet killed anyone. His soul was still mostly intact. Unlike, Severus. Asking Severus to kill Dumbledore spared Draco and gave him a chance at a better life. 4) Quite literally, the best all-around win/win scenario was what played out. There was no other way given the situation. Severus HAD to do this.
@alexwenger763

Snape's is blue because he would rather accomplish his mission without the display of force. He definitely meant and felt little regret for killing Dumbledore as he didn't have long because of the horcrux curse anyway and Snape had been seeing the grim consequences of the curse as he made potions for Dumbledore. His spell is blue because he had intent although different feelings. His isn't a kill of spite or anger or rage or hate it's one of mercy so that his friend, who has already prepared to die that night, may no longer suffer and to prevent Draco from corrupting his own soul. This is why I believe Snape's soul never splintered when he did this either as merciful death based on kindness and love does not defy nature. This makes sense because a lot of protective and compassionate magic is blue ie: patronuses. This is also why Voldemort could not kill Snape himself with magic and had to turn to Nagini because he viewed Snape as close to a friend and trusted ally as he was capable of. Also the fall didn't kill him the curse did, it's stated in the literal book that it was the curse.

Magic has 3 main pillars: Intent, Willpower & Magical Power. Intent requires visualising and understanding what you want a spell to do. Willpower involves twisting your magic into the correct shape to match your intent. Magical power is a mixture of the size of your Magical core and how much of that magic is readily accessible, and determines the amount of magic that you're able to feed into a spell. The history of the Killing Curse is relatively unknown, beyond it being created some time in the Middle Ages. Considering the time period, it's not unlikely that it was originally used by farmers to peacefully slaughter cattle, an act of mercy, not hatred. Also, it is the perfect euthanasia spell, with Healers trained to use it in certain situations, again an act of mercy, not hatred. The colour of the spell was likely turquoise for these purposes. I believe its purpose was warped as the common user's intent became more malicious over time. As the intent was different, the shape of the magic of the spell was also different, hence the change in colour from turquoise to green.

Snape did the spell out of friendship, love, and compassion. He did it to save his good friend and teacher from needless suffering at the hands of a curse that would have been a horrible death and to save his student from a fate worse than death. And because the spell was done out of love, it did not damage his soul at all. He may have been a Slytherin in his mind (cunning, perfect at deception, a perfectly guarded mind, a master of the dark arts) but he was a Gryffindor at heart, being the bravest of them all in the end because of his unrequited love for Lilly.
@GLoLChibs

And not even all Slytherins were evil- Merlin, Slughorn, Snape. Somehow 'cunning' translated to 'evil all because of Salazar's obsession with pureblood. Meanwhile, Lily and James were both Gryffindors: James was a terrible bully to many, but especially Snape. Lily was fine being with the guy who relentlessly bullied her childhood friend. Snape may have called her mudblood in a heated moment, but Lily tolerating James' treatment of people was far worse because that was intentional. 1000 points from Gryffindor.

I think that it might be down to the movie taking liberties in order for the visuals to look more uniform in that scene, and perhaps not taking the spell colour into account at all since it's not really explained in the previous movies either. However seeing to the books and Snape as a character, I very much believe that what you present here not only would be a viable explanation but a well thought out connection between spells and intent. I would however maybe expect Snape to be just about that competent that he would be able to mask even his emotions in producing this spell for the sake of his masked role. He was after all prepared for Dumbledore's eminent death, and his possible participation in it. It would be a huge red flag for Voldemort and the other Death Eaters if a spell's expected famous tint would differ. Interesting topic nonetheless!

"That boy’s soul is not yet so damaged. I would not have it ripped apart on my account." "And my soul Dumbledore? Mine?" "You alone know whether it’ll harm your soul to help an old man avoid pain and humiliation." I don't think it damaged his soul, and the color is just the movie's stylistic representation that this casting of avada kedavra was different, half-hearted. The book mentions nothing of the off-coloring, but does suggest that Snape's soul may not be damaged. I think maybe this implies that Snape's soul is less damaged, or damaged in a different way. Clearly it wasn't a murder, but a mercy. Some would argue, an assisted self-

Several reads later, I comprehend and the revulsion and hatred look in his face was not towards dumbledore but for what he himself was about to do, this took me a while to realize but since I've been re reading the books I notice that, having the contex of his deal with Dumbledure in DH, you could make the assumtion that in the moment of true, he knew that he had to do it but still hated himself for what he was about to do, that's why he took it so personal when harry later tells him that he's a coward

Damn I'm so happy you came up with this theory. I had the same for years and had constantly to argue about it. But yeah, for me it seems kinda logical. It's kinda like Harry as he tried to cast one of the forbidden spells on Bellatrix. (Forgot the name in english)

Another weird thing in the movie is Dumbledore’s arms flailing and him looking alive after the killing curse. Avada kedavra is supposed to instantly kill, which it doesn’t. To me it suggests that Snape secretly cast a different spell without incantation and just said the words Avada Kedavra to make it more believable for the death eaters around him.

Snape actually casted the killing curse because as soon as the curse hit Dumbledore, the spell he had casted on Harry was lifted as the caster of the spell was dead.

seeing how Dumbledore was still technically alive as he was falling, since Snape didn't want to kill him he lacked the conviction for the curse to be effective, but it was enough to push him off the building to his death which had the same desired effect, and since the only people around was malfoy and potter, they would not have had the knowledge to tell the difference in the color of the killing curse or at least would have been so traumatized by the events that they would not have understood the significance of it, which helped Snape to keep his cover and still keep his "promise"

Cool theory, I certainly can see the color connection. However I don't think the curse was really blue (especially if that connection is there) since the others would have noticed and Snape would soon have been in a big pile of death. No, if such connection exist Snape would be aware and be able to harden himself enough to be able to perform a green curse. Don't underestimate Snape's abilities!

Not to be an absolute buzzkill (I do like this theory) but didn't Yates' team choose to use a more pallid, blue colour filter for the HBP movie? If so that's probably why Avada Kedavra is blueish looking in that scene

I think its very possible the color is based off of emotion instead of intent. The killing curse will work regardless of emotion as long as the intent is there, but the intent isnt what colors it. Snape was freeing Dumbledore and protecting Draco. Blue is more of a love/protect emotion. Usually when the curse is cast the emotion is jealousy/malice. Snape had the full intent to kill Dumbledore but he had no malice nor ill-will against him. The spell is powered by the word and intent, its colored by the emotion. At least in my belief.

U thoughts are wrong As for everyone's favourite child-bullying adult, Snape's Killing Curse was 'blue' due to the cyanish background of the film scene. It was actually green, but the camera and effects made a bluish overlay which overlapped the green spell.

I always thought that he had the full intent, but the intent was not to kill for mean purposes but for a good one. So the intent part was present, but it was blue because he didn't kill him because he was murderous or hated him, but it was because he did it out of protection for Draco and promise to Dumbledore. So he had to do it and fully meant it, but it was just out of goodness instead of dark.
