Not equity. Equality. Equity is adjusting according to people needs so that everyone have the same opportunities open for them. Equality, however, is mathematically, giving the same thing to everyone regardless of where they stand when they receive it. This means rich people have an equal chance of getting a scholarship than poor people, whether they need it or not; it needs everyone have to evolve with the same educational system and ways of teaching whether it's right or wrong for them specifically; and everyone wants to be found equally victim of the system. There is nothing about diversity and inclusion in those so-called "safe-spaces", it's all white, middle-class, hippy wanna-bes students in my experience.

Bobbleheads at Netflix and Amazon, along their their bluecheck hatchet men, believe that they have a monopoly on people's eyes and minds. The saddest part about the abomination Amazon has made is that they could had easily created in canon lore stories about POCs by setting the stories in Harad and Rhun which were never explored storywise in the books. Imagine seeing how the people of those lands lived and center it around those that resisted and resented Morgoth and Sauron's call since both saw them as nothing more than arrow fodder since canons didn't exist yet. Imagine also since those parts of Arda were not covered in length one can then bring in lore from those regions for example the Oliphants that we saw in the movies we could see Olyphant riders and trainers using Oliphants to build structures such as a bridge and then have Rok attack them (A Rok was a mythological giant bird that hunted and ate elephants so huge it could had gone toe to toe with Smaug. But no they chose to ditch the canon lore entirely and repaint white characters instead.🙄 Its because of 💩 for brains creators like these and megacorporations supporting them that instead of having an Static Shock movie we get a repainted Clark Kent/Superman instead. This Baizuo era we live under just sucks monkey balls.

The thing about the "woke" imperative is that it seems to require shock value. As if diversity doesn't qualify as such without the component of blatant in-your-face shoe-horning or tokenism. Representation that quietly nestles within the confines of a given narrative lacks the aggressive "wow- they wouldn't dare" factor that wokeness seems to require. Absolutely, pretty much every instance of ‘Benetton’ style stunt casting and/or gender/race flipping beloved, traditionally white/male characters et al is demonstrably driven by an insatiable if petulant desire to shock and provoke. In fact this disquieting phenomena owes much to the old advertising maxim ‘sex sells’, only here it’s not sex but rather _cultural desecration_ that’s deliberately intended to foster cheap, shock publicity for a film or tv show that’ll hopefully secure it a greater audience as a consequence. Unfortunately though this strategy scarcely ever seems to work: disrespecting acclaimed works and characters succeeds only in dividing fans and audiences whilst engendering widespread disdain, contempt and enduring enmity. Alas modern media still stubbornly insists it can simultaneously placate the centre right/left majority of its potential audience with the quasi religious zealots of the minority. They can’t, so if they want to continue making money and enjoy success they’d be wise to cater to former, if they instead covet the meretricious ephemera of being ‘cool’ and ‘progressive’, the latter.

They also starting moving management to recent MBAs from experienced IT managers who had a disturbing tendency to say no to management's bright ideas. It seems really counter-intuitive. The whole "Get Woke, Go Broke" diatribe is not a 'myth' but rather identifies a pattern in company behaviour and the resulting outcomes. We have companies seeking to politicise everything and die on the sword of whatever message they are pushing; cutting their nose off to spite their face! Not only is this occurring in most things media; film, TV, books, videogames, etc. It is also occurring in advertising - where it is not inclusion but rather a focusing on minorities that has become the flavour of the day, hardly representative. It has become hard to not become lectured to. Take Virgin media for example, the recent UK adverts pay no attention to product but rather preach about how diversity, no matter how forced, is the best outcome. We have massive multinational corporations stating that people are all individuals yet collectivising everyone. Gillette telling us how a woman can be a man and vise versa. Shell and BP telling us to take better care of the planet. Companies have become soapboxes for wokism and identity politics. The issue is that this surely does not work. Do people really feel more inclined to buy a product because they have parroted the current progressive talking point? Amazon seems to be riding this wave. It is hard not to be cynical and state that the point of creating this woke 'disaster piece' is solely to upset and challenge pre-existing fans. They took a beloved franchise and decided it could be improved on. Why, because the story is not good enough? No, because those that are so indoctrinated to believe 'diversity is a strength' see a lack of diversity within LotR and thus believe it is able to be strengthened. To the executives at Amazon their 'Rings of Power' will be an improvement purely because of this point.

Watch anything by James Lindsay, he explains it more eloquently than I could. It all stems from Marxism. It seeks to radicalize the marginalized by telling them they're victims, that they must tear down and reshape society to achieve true equality, (Going as far as to deny actual science i.e. math is racist, biology is transphobic.) To do so they must infect everything from the sciences to the entertainment industry. Like a virus that infects one cell, so then that cell can only produce more viruses. Your generation of leftists, whilst I disagree with them, placed importance on rationality, and cared about hypocrisy. This new generation of leftists don't care about class, or the means of production. They have no respect for culture. They've been suckled at the teat of intersectionalism, which says _race_ is the most important power dynamic in society. Closely followed by sexuality and gender. And they are quite happy to be bourgeois as anything while doing it, as hypocrisy is a meaningless concept to them. This has been the long term goal of the Frankfurt School, they wrote about this in the '40s and the torch has been carried through to today through post-modernism, Critical Legal Studies, through to modern day Critical Race Theory and Critical Gender Studies, to what Kimberle Crenshaw called 'Intersectionalism' and people colloquially call 'woke'. That's what the original characters looked like, and you don't vandalize someone else's work just so you can give out racial participation trophies. WOw, 'diversity means, difference' - there were plenty of differences in the original books and movies with different races working together, but no, they aren't diverse where you want diversity, you only want it in skin color, context be damned. WOw, "Now yall mad cause a few characters are people of color" - wrong again (a habit of yours really, maybe go back to school?) - fans have repeatedly pointed out how pocs could work within Tolkien, but Amazon couldn't be bothered to try, and just lazily inserted race swaps. WOw, 'Blind Racism, where people can't see the racism they speak' - yes, you've certainly proved yourself to be a racist here - you don't like groups of white people working together (racist), you can't interpret the world outside of skin color (i.e. you engage in racialism), you advocate taking something away from one race and giving it to another race (racism), you believe people are necessarily entitled to something based on their skin color (racist), you demand insertion of pocs in traditionally white roles because you think that gives pocs value (racist), and you project attitudes/affect on people based their race (racist). By the way, most people develop empathy and perspective-taking by their early elementary school years, which allows them to identify with characters who are or aren't their own race/gender/etc. If you can't do that then what can I say, I guess you are developmentally disabled.

Most big productions involve generic corporate writing and use a beloved franchise as a façade like how the Bug in Men in Black wore an Edgar suit to blend in with humans. Fans have now become aware of this, and incredibly critical of these productions, so they wear Woke identity politics as a façade to protect from backlash; and this is conceptually similar to putting a rainbow colored BLM t-shirt on the Edgar suit and calling anyone who suspects he is an alien a racist/sexist/transphobic individual.

I think there is a lot of good points here but maybe Paul Chato is leaving out how older creatives are jumping on the woke bandwagon either to save their jobs or now see a golden opportunity to make outright agit-prop disguised as entertainment. Example is Alex Kurtzman and Bad Robot with Star Trek projects where he describes the show as his platform to express his polemics. Then you have the tv show Picard where Patrick Stewart in Vanity Fair more or less brazenly says he hijacked Star Trek to create a show that would showcase all his political leanings and be a vehicle for his personal propaganda. The only problem is that they forgot what made the show click with fans and when fans say they don't recognize what they are watching as anything like Star Trek they are told they are bad people who we don't want watching "our" show. Great marketing.

@Clifford V I should have chosen my words more carefully lol. -I mean to say that regarding this series, they can afford to lose money on it (their main source of income before diverging into streaming was always their online shop), but if they can make this flagship series into something suiting their ideology, then they have carte blanche to do so and normalise this insertion of woke ideas with other less-culturally-important-but-still-big-name series, and it sets a precedent to make big bucks in the future when people have become more used to those ideas and there will be less people to pushback? In short, if this series does see pushback and it isn't that lucrative, they've still accomplished their long-term financial objective of laying down the foundations for making more money in like the following years or whatever, though that's my educated analysis and I may be completely wrong! 😆

I... am under an impression that the writers of today are the kids who we read writing fanfiction back in the late 90ies and early 2000s. So, the people who were inspired by the great works of art of the past not to create their own, original, new and unique art; but merely to "infiltrate" and "expand" what was already created. People who don't know what to DO with a blank sheet of paper. So yes, I believe the future doesn't bid well for anything already in existence, whether we're talking about "wokefying" or just plain mangling. Worse still, I don't believe we are in for anyhting new, inspired or original in the near future. I'd wager we need to wait for the next generation that will tire of this regurgitation and thus be inspired to be original.

This is a pretty good theory. One I hadn't thought of (i.e., new grad = save $$$). The ironic thing is the new grads are happy to cause their employer lose money to spread their wokism. Why, because corporations are evil anyway, and helping them lose money gives the finger to evil capitalism. Win-win right. I mean they won't say it like that but that's what they are thinking. But there's an upside called creative destruction. It creates opportunity for others to create better products. It may come from a surprising direction. I don't know what it will be but it's coming. How in the world could they have not paid any attention to canon, equipment, uniforms, characters, story lines, the universe as it had been described in several TV shows, movies and books over the past 50 years? How could the people making this new show that supposedly takes place "10 years before Kirk and Spock" have ignored everything that made the "Kirk and Spock" show so iconic and beloved? The fact that everyone involved in Discovery not only didn't know any better, but didn't want to know any better seems to be as good an answer as any.

Chato nailed it; at least in part. This mass replacement of experienced boomer aged personnel with younger Millennial aged recent graduates did cause a major shift. Keep in mind this same thing was happening across all industries, not just entertainment. What Chato gets wrong is that this change wasn't simply about costs. While it is more appealing tp ay a newbie 1/4th - 1/5th of your seasoned employee those higher up making these replacement decisions also know that means you''ll have a far less experienced person in the role and if you believed it was a role anyone could do why did you ever agree to let the seasoned employee reach $240k a year? So why then would the people at the top replace their experienced marketing people with an inexperienced (and woke) recent graduate? Companies often use executive personnel services as a means to quickly find replacements especially at executive level positions. They contract out that process to one of a few firms who do nothing but recruit executive talent to then pass on to companies seeking executive replacements. This is a practice that has been around for some time and until 5-10 years ago was very reliable About 10 years ago the top 2 firms doing this kind of work were acquired by investment firms that deal with people like George Soro's and entities like Blackrock. For the last 5 years these firms have been sending pro-woke executive talent only to key companies. Where as in the past they sent the best qualified person they now were sending people based on ideoalgiucal adherence which wasn't hard to do as the education system has been for the last 25-30 years being conditioning millennials to be what we now call the woke. After enough years of doing this and with enough woke executives in place it became much easier to get support from the private sector for pushing ideological beliefs that are not popular with the majority. The Millennials are the bulk *(of the various generations) in the private sector among the 30-40 somethings but not every Millennial was effectively brainwashed during their k-12 + College years; some resisted while others were home schooled. If you wondered how a for profit company could act in ways that run counter to profitability it's because of this slow replacement of key personnel, mainly executive level positions, who now are decision makers and or influencers. The infiltration of executive level positions is not enough by itself because many companies are publicly traded and so shareholders have to be satisfied. Toi that end the ESG was introduced a number of years back; the Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance rating. The ESG is to private business what the social credit score is to Chinese citizens. Since the US government can not implement a social credit like system,, at least not yet, this one for the private sector was implemented as a work-a-round, very much like how the US Government tried to use OSHA as means to enforce a vaccine mandate that they couldn't constitutionally do with the citizens. offload it to the private sector and the outcome is the same. With the ESG a business faces higher expenses and harsher conditions (with regards to competition) if they have a low ESG. The ESG is voluntary but it's made effectively mandatory by getting buy in from key industries like finance. Most major financial institutions are in on the ESG making it very difficult for business to get thins like a loan at a reasonable rate if they have a low ESG. I know it sounds conspiratorial but just google What Is The ESG and read about it yourself. It's definitely packaged as being something good but make no mistake it's a tool for control under the guise of being a better business. There is more to this than just executive recruitment infiltration and the ESG but those 2 are enough to get profit driven business to act in unprofitable ways by changing what the term success means.

I suspect that after Christopher died the rest of his family wasn't that concerned about the legacy Professor Tolkein had left them with. After all, many of them are from the generation that is propagating this "wokeism" in everything and the family had the means to send them to college, where a lot of this crap is coming from. So the generation now in charge of the legacy may not disagree with what amazon is doing. It's very sad that the very thing that has made them rich and set them up for life is not valuable enough to them to protect.

Well said. Ideas have a lot of sway. I thought Post Modern film theory was about movies like Ferris Bueller's Day off and Annie Hall, but I've found from professors like Helen Pluckrose and Peter Boghossian, that it goes a lot deeper than just deconstructing the rules of film language to make a point. It's about deconstructing the institutions of society. If it's there, then it needs torn down. The past needs erased. It's become a new religion. Unfortunately, it seems to satisfy a really deep need in people. I don't understand it. I don't know how to stop it. It seems to especially effect people who've been hurt deeply and can't find a way to fix it or confront it, so they run over to solve the world's problems instead. There's a little Soviet Film theory stirred in. They thought film language was a tool they could use to reform society to the "right way" of thinking. And I guess it worked for a while.

Exactly! I was recently in California which has a number of "vice" taxes on the books and that many more things "known by the state of California to cause" who knows what kind of malady. But whilst they proclaim that evidence from their studies have shown that these vice taxes would slow consumption of tobacco products or make people drive less and so on_ the opposite seems to be true. Or at the very least remained unchanged. And in trying to be a beacon of magnanimity the state of California just so happened to rake in over 40 billion dollars surplus revenue this past year continuing a trend which even brought in huge gains during the heart of the pandemic. Yet as they continue to allocate funds to the various social programs on the docket, the homeless population in downtown Los Angeles has continued growing unabated. Now if one looks at a map of downtown the entire stretch called "Skid Row" in downtown around the fashion and toy districts are teeming with tents and human excrement on the streets only ending with some finality as on one hits the base of the hill leading up to the "financial" district with the Wells Fargo and Bank of America buildings looming above.

Why Tolkien loved the Middle Ages? Because it was the age where science and peace begin to really matter in society. Before those were not the priority. Besides it was the Age of Creativity and Discovery: see the quite objetive data (manuscript production where much hugher than in place in the word) in quite Epic video (6 mn) in my channel "Age of Reason : Science in Middle Ages.

Covering an established franchise with deep lore and beloved characters in your own personal beliefs or agenda is MUCH easier than coming up with your own good, original series/content in general. Makes sense that the people directing this monstrosity would be fine to shoehorn their ideologies or personal beliefs into something as beloved as LotR. They don't care about the fandom or canon, they care about "finding the racist Nazis" by exposing them via their dog 💩 show.

That's what the rich have always done. Keep people fighting amongst themselves to keep the commoners attention focused on them and not the rich. The owner class did this in the coal mining towns in Appalachia. Separate the Italians, the Germans, the Polish immigrants and black people from the white west Virginians or Kentuckians. Everyone had their own section of company town to live in. So they would all be suspicious and leary of one another and not uniting as one force to fight the bosses and make a Union happen.

Hollywood: Let's recycle, reuse and regurgitate old material because it has some amount of a built in audience! Potential viewers: OK... Hollywood: A small number of highly vocal people insist that the entire world's past is evil and should be ignored and forgotten, this will work surely? This sounds like a viable plan, what could go wrong? Potential viewers: Umm, what? Hollywood: We've commissioned a survey that be will administered in a SoCal shopping centre. The survey completely begs the question and yields the result we decided we wanted. What could go wrong? Potential viewers: Hold on, all of this sounds lazy, stupid and horrible! Hollywood: Whoa now, that's racist talk! Our staff of young inexperienced liberal college graduates have assured us that it makes perfect economic sense that the customer is always wrong. So, stop being sexist, and eat the shit we are serving you, and don't forget to tell us it tastes like chocolate!!! Potential viewers: This whole thing seems like a steaming pile! Hollywood: That's it! We've had enough of your homophobia, you are censored and copyright stricken! We will now allow our promotional campaign to descend into some sort of demented dog and pony show. Recent Hollywood history has demonstrated that this has worked out wonderfully for other studios. Potential viewers: I don't care anymore...

Amazon like many other megacorporations before just bought the Lord Of The Rings IP willy Nilly not understanding the history behind it. They never probably even Googled it and just glanced at the success of PJs LOTR trilogy films but never the actual reason behind it. They never researched that they were actually buying the TV rights to what happens to be the 3rd most sold book in the entire planet translated into over 40 languages. With millions upon millions of fans worldwide of all the skin colors under the rainbow and those are the fans they ended up calling Yatzee white supremacists. They called Arabs, Japanese, Latinos, Blacks, Native Americans collectively for being Tolkien fans reecist bigots and in their unmitigated gall not understanding the huge fire ants nest they stepped on they made the Superfan videos to boot. That show is 7 months away and the rage and hate against it is of Biblical and apocalyptic proportions and rightly so.

It shouldn't be so, but politics and ideology have always been a huge factor in liberal arts. A student could put together a wonderfully well-written essay, with zero spelling and grammar errors, filled with copious amounts of footnotes to substantiate the many points made by its author, with even the footnotes done perfectly, and that student will get a "D" for his effort if the conclusion of the essay is contrary to the beliefs of the teacher, while a student who submits a shoddy essay that confirms the teacher's ideology gets the "A". Diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism appears to be such a rage at major universities that all graduates these days view the world that way. It is not only what they have been taught. It is what they had to regurgitate to stay in school or graduate with better than a "D" average. When confronted with a real world outside of academia which bears little relationship to their indoctrination, it seems that rather than adapt to the real world, they have set out to make the real world adapt to their ideology. Even commercials these days depict a world far divorced from reality, a fantasy world where most couples are either mixed, gay, or both.
