In 1957, the soviets launched Sputnik, the first human satellite into space. Sixty years and 5,000 rocket launches later, objects in orbit are counted by the thousands. The problem is that in addition to the still functioning satellites, enormous amounts of now completely useless junk also float around the planet. Hundreds of thousands of pieces of debris now clog the skies. So much so that if nothing is done to clean up Earth's orbit, it could become impossible to send rockets into space.
