Here’s my theory about Han Mi-nyeo not having a partner and still surviving the marbles game. It was a uneven number and since the old man is in on it, it was probably assumed that no one would pick a 94 year old, sick, frail man to team up with, hence why he didn’t even bother getting up to find a partner. So when Gi-hun came over to shake his hand, he was surprised. He wasn’t intended to play the marbles game because that was his way out.

That isn’t the actual case, remember when they said everyone has equality in the games from killing the doctor? It wouldn’t be fair to not actually play the game and still get eliminated.

One of the things I found bad about Squid Game was the resulting number of participants, the game were clearly made weeks or maybe months in advance, but they had no idea how many people would survive each game, including the kill runs in the waiting room. and yet the numbers magically matched for the games, and we had 3 finalists...you may say that it's nothing bad and it's just part of the plot armour, well okay, but how the hell do the walls have illustrations painted in them of all the games and one of them literally was a triangle of 3 people around it. how did they know that only 3 people would survive the glass walk?

The fact that Han Mi-neyo survived the marbles game has more to do with Korean culture. In Korea, we never leave out a kid when playing games. If we can't split the teams evenly, then the remaining will be called "kkakduki" which is kind of like a free pass for that person. Also, the reveal of the brother might seem unsatisfying to non-Korean viewers, but most Koreans were really shocked when the brother was revealed. This is because it was very unexpected for the Front man to be Lee Byung-hun. Most of the cast in Squid Game aren't very familiar actors except for Gong Yoo and Lee Jung-jae, but Lee Byung-hun is one of the top actors in South Korea. I also personally like the ending. I get that the reason behind Squid Game might seem absurd, but I think that is the point. I think having a good reason behind why those rich people created this game would only justify how messed up they are.

I actually really enjoyed the twist of the old man just it because he's rich and bored. It speaks to a topic i'm very passionate abt, narcissism. There are a lot of narcissists in this world and they dont out grow it, no matter how old and cute they may seem. Some work their ass of and are usually the most successful where business and money is concerned. So its not surprising that this old narcissist, once the praise of "omg you're so rich. How did you do it?" Winds down, and he's now on his last days, chooses to abuse his power by trapping people in a game for his own selfish entertainment. He's not just narcissistic tho, he may also be a sociopath. Either way, he's a messed up person that deserved to die alone but used money, the thing he prolly betrayed so many in his younger days for, to stop that from happening. Great character writing to me
@LNMTerry
@LNMTerry 2 жыл бұрын
But the games have been running since 1995. He's just a shitty character. It makes no sense. If it was John Doe it would have had the same impact. Plus a narcissist is a person who has admiration of themselves. How does killing people for 25 years relate to narcissism? Also there's that, "everything gets boring when you're rich," except killing people for 25 years because yeah, good writing.

The problem was the screenplay, and the last two episodes are the result of mistakes made earlier in the story. I see a lot of praise for episode 6, but I think it was a huge mistake writing wise. The bridge game should've been played before the marble game. Then you only have 2 pairs playing the marble game. The Gganbus and Sangwoo/Ali, instead of jumping around to 4 teams in one episode (suffered from Spiderman 3 syndrome). After making those tough decisions during the marble game the 2 finalist go directly into the showdown emotionally battered.

Really well put together video. I would like to say though, that the reveal to the motivation behind the games being simply wealth and boredom definitely has its fair share of being cliché, however dark-web torture shows and similar things of the same nature do exist in the real world, with its founding and motivation simply being because of mentally-crazed people with enough money to do so. Nevertheless, I do agree that there could definitely have been a much more interesting reveal to the backstory. I believe that even with its flaws, Squid Game presented an idea of a show like none other, and thus got its deserved fame.

@@TuffSpecialistYT Battle royale is very different. Much bloodier and intense. less whimsy. Alice in borderlands is definitely very similar to this show though. I enjoyed Alice in borderland more but I chalked it up to relating to the protagonist more, but what you mention in video helped me put into words why I prefer alice in borderlands more. Also during that slowmo scene I had to rewind it because I Thought I missed something important because I didn't understand why it slowed down. There had been much better moments that deserved the slowmo treatment leading up to this so I thought we were suppose to be seeing something subtle but nope. I also knew from the get go that frontman was his brother but what kept it interesting was wondering why and they did not deliver. I was hoping there was some sort of moral reasoning for why he chose to run games after winning. I felt like if he had a reasonable motivation like he saw some sort of flaw in society he wanted to fix not only would it have played out better when it came to the interactions he had with his policeman brother but it would of made the twist at the end not feel forced and redundant. Even though it was executed better the way they handled the frontman reveal and his motivations ruined anything they had going for the final reveal

The thing is, there's a conflict in Il-nam's character motivation and how the show paints him. In the final episode, it was revealed that he organized the game because he is rich and bored. His motivation for making the game is to provide a chance for the desperate to turn their lives around. Yet, the game was designed to take the lives of those who lose therefore painting a darker statement. Il-nam, through the game he designed, is saying to the desperate people he pulls into his game, "Your life is pointless as it is. This game is your final chance. Fail this and there is no more value in your keeping you alive." That would have been good on its own. But the show doesn't have the balls to paint Il-nam's character this way. Even when delivering this reveal, the show paints it in a way that the character is perceived as kind and just lonely. Not evil at all. Which is contrary to his actual actions. The reason behind the dissonance is the creator of Squid Game wants this mind-blowing reveal while not tweaking enough the backbone concept he copied from Kaiji. He wants a sympathetic light on a rich but bored man who plays a death game, but at the same time, he wants that old man to be the creator of a death game with nefarious motivation.

Personally I disagree with a couple of your takes. The marble game didn’t really have that many moments that were excessive. The reason why it demands that amount if time is because it addresses the short but powerful bonds many of these players had with each other. The opinion that the main characters are gonna live so kill everyone else quickly just isn’t befitting a piece of work that is meant to convey a particular meaning. My second grievance has to do with your assertion that the old man’s reasoning was dumb. Evil is not necessarily akin to intelligent reasoning. It is a product of the opposite most of the time. The old man probably had a suck twisted reasoning where watching these people desperately attempt to win fulfilled in part his bloodlust and yearning for his childhood.

In my experience the slow pacing is really common in asian shows, and this show is paced significantly faster than most Korean shows I've seen. But I understand when someone is not used to slow pacing the show might seem boring, however in my opinion the slow pacing creates a sense of realism. In American movies, especially marvel-type action movies, the pacing leads to the whole story seeming un-real. I think by choosing to make the first episode (and I noticed the last episode) very slow, this reveals how boring gi-hun life is. And in turn this makes the parts of the story where the cast are playing the games, even more exciting. In the marble episode, I again think signifigantly speeding the story up would have made the show lose some impact. But I do think a couple of minutes could be cut out, as I got bored half way through the episode. I don't think the show is some master piece, but I can confidently say after watching it the show would not leave my thoughts. And I honestly needed some time to really take in the show, because of how powerfull it was. I do think the old man being alive in the end, was one of the show's biggest mistakes, and ruined the ending. I also think gi-hun not taking the plane in the end, ruined some of the show's message. You'd think he'd have learning to be there for his family, especially after his mom died.

The society critique was explicitly said multiple times throughout the film! Same here. Without the "deep" elements and the extensive violence this show wouldn't have any hype. I'm an American, self-proclaimed "cinema buff" who was never really into Asian cinema growing up. But, I really enjoyed Squid Game overall. Yes, it's definitely far from perfect, but can you mention anything that truly is? Nevertheless, it totally engrossed me. The marbles episode made me cry, and I'm not ashamed to admit that. Like Zutang777 said above, "The colors, costumes, the presence of the film is what takes me in." Just because you can't get into something (like me with most anime) doesn't mean it's objectively bad. Maybe we just can't appreciate some things because we grew up in a completely different culture and have totally different worldviews than the original artist. I don't know. I thought that some of the dialogue sounded kinda funny intonation wise, but maybe that's just how the Korean language sounds. And from the little I do know about kdramas (which isn't much) the same episode flashback seems to be a common kdrama thing. Different artistic movements from different times and countries tend to have different elements that very much mark it as being from that movement/county. Yeah, I have no idea why the same episode flashback is a thing, but if it's a common trope across an entire film industry, it might be there for a reason, historical or otherwise. For all I know, it could be an elaborate inside joke! My point is, there are almost always many different angles from which to view something. If you felt like you were being treated like an idiot, that is a valid feeling. But, if you don't have the full picture, how do know it was just "padding it's own run time" and not doing it for another reason? And to your "it has nothing original about it" point, "good artists borrow; great artists steal." There really isn't anything new under the sun. Just new ways of recombining what's already there. I used to see most issues as very much black and white, but the older I get, the more I realize how much gray there is in the world. I'm not trying to convince you to enjoy Squid Game. I just want you and others to take a step back and acknowledge that we can't all see the whole picture. Just because other people enjoy something that you don't doesn't mean they're morons.

Thing is: nothing you’ve pointed to made the show worse for me. Of course we knew there was plot armour going in - it was never about who would win, just how they would get there and the inter-character relationships during that journey. The slow pacing, for me, worked in its favour: we, like the players, were being shown that the games could come at any second - which meant that every time the Danube started playing, I got a little nervous - this would not have been achieved with 6 episodes 6 games as the pacing itself would have ended up being predictable and stale (oh look, we’re 9 minutes into the episode - there must be another game coming); in a 9 episode show, they took the time to curate relationships to make the marbles game more impactful - that girl that was introduced 2 episodes before didn’t have to be introduced at all, she could have been thrown in in the marbles episode, but she wasn’t and it made her suicide more important as we learned she had nothing to live for, the time that was spent to build Ali’s trust in Sang-yoo (spelling?) made the betrayal stronger, the time spent building Gi-yun’s kindness/pity towards the old man, essentially saved his life as he had 100% lost that game and another character in his place would have died. The time spent was not wasted, it was paid-off. That 40 minutes during the marble game for me was the best 40 minutes of the show. I don’t think the old man’s motivations were ever set up as a big reveal. It was always clear that whoever was behind it all had no regard for human life. Any attempts to add altruism would have worked terribly. We can’t keep expecting every villain in every story to have Thanos-level motivations. Sometimes the bad guy is just an asshole, and that’s ok. What’s let you down is your own expectation that there should have been more, where no more was necessary.

The dislikes (which I did not give, for the record) are likely for the clickbait title. Could've just labeled it "Squid Game review", but no, he wanted the clicks that "OVERRATED!!!" would bring. You admitted yourself that with such a title, you expected a typical "OVERRATED" type video, which usually is "I'm declaring something tons of people like to be 'overrated' just to be contrarian, and it'll make me look sophisticated and intellectual, and get me clicks too!". I assume most of the dislikes were made before people even watched the vid, but that's the video title's fault. Can't make a clickbait title then complain that it provoked dislikes.

About Il-Nam's motivation: I think his reasons (for making the game) being "dumb" is the whole point - what's more realistic, frustrating and pretty much what you would expect from "the one percent", then doing things for fun and just because they can. I mean, for me it was a good point of how meaningless life can be, how the poor are just toys for the rich and so on.
@Rakerong
@Rakerong 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. That whole section of the video and comparing it to another movie's reveal didn't jive with me. This movie was frightening in how realistic things can be. There's no supernatural force or unknown entity toying with people in these twisted games, nor is it the work of one man. It's a whole organization of wealthy elites and their associates preying on the downtrodden of society. But the magnitude of their operations and the fact that it's been going on for some time, totally believable seeing how ridiculously rich and influential the handful of people in the world are. The reveal wasn't just that the old man was behind it and that he was a bored old rich man. We knew it was wealthy people doing this the entire time when they mentioned VIPS. The reveal was that the old man, whom EVERYONE loved and adored throughout the show and thought was just a sweet person dying of a terminal illness, turned out to be the ring leader. Is it the most creative twist? No, but that's not the point.

It's a point of expanding the life of Il Nam on what he went through. Most likely that he had the same life with Gi Hun as he was a rising moneylender and probably he won a game to have funds and investment to become a loanshark himself. He probably was a stud as he was a tug of war expert and won games to become extremely rich and probably lost friends like Gi Hun did and he won so much that he became numb in lives being lost. So in his boredom, since he lost his value of life of others, created the Squid Games and his fellow rich men became the 1st VIP's. he could have even lost Gi Hun's mother (Seong) in those games as well...ohooohooo..another theory that Gi Hun is his son.

But I dis agree on one and I would like to explain the situation where min yeo wasn't killed but allowed to skip the game. It is one of the game principles Asians follow, when anyone among the players is left out without partner, they are marked as weaklings of the game, and they are allowed to stay in the game but other teams don't bother their existence in the game. They are just invisible to the other players. Mostly happens when odd number of player remains. So, ot is a part of the game rules, makers were trying to do a fair play(according to their native game rules ) for the left out player. P. S. I'm glad you made this video, because I am a die-hard fan of Squid Game and wants to present a counter to all your points: 1) The too-long scenes - The example you chose for singular for being stylistic. It's not like any other 'drawn-out' scenes of the show at all. In fact, I think the longer scenes added realism to the show. Character dynamics needed to be built up + feeling of being trapped in a hellscape, were compellingly conveyed precisely because the pace of scenes is slower. In fact, the set-up sequences in the first two eps felt more show-like and directed because it all moved very swiftly. So, I think the long scenes actually make the show more compelling. 2a) Plot-armour/Predictability - I don't think it's the point of the show to deliver the most unexpected outcomes through bold show deaths. The games and deaths are purposeful to show the ruthlessness of capitalism (which the games are a microcosm for). Yes, plot armour was evident in the tug-of-war game, BUT I think audiences should focus more on the fact that people were being made to cause other people's deaths as the games progressed. This complaint is similar to when I hear people say "I dislike the show because the games are simplistic" like my g that's not the focus. The show has a greater message, and deaths are purposeful not just to shock and be bold. 2b) Han-myi not being killed - A player only dies in the games or if they alone refuse to play or if they kill themselves or each other. Due to Han-myi's situation being nome of these things, she wasn't killed. Seemed reasonable to me (or like not enough to complain about). 3) VIPs being cringe - My interpretation of cringey characterisation (in a show that has phenomenal acting and dialogue) of the VIPs is basically a Korean show poking fun at American/Western culture - A culture that has routinely shown to be ignorant of the difference between various Asian identities. I imagine that white people got to see/feel the same embarrassment that non-white/western people feel when western movies portray a POC poorly. So, I really enjoyed how badly they acted and it was masterful of SG's creator. 4) The penultimate game - it was kinda like hopscotch I thought. So, not that different to the other games. Again, it may have been exaggerated in its theatricality for the VIPs specifically. 5) Pair-up/Marble game - I genuinely thought that they'd keep the main team together til the last game (where they might protest/whatever), so it was a twist for me. Also, just because something is predictable doesn't mean it's painful to watch - it's about how the predictability is executed. It sounds like all you care about is the unexpected twist, when really the show is not just trying to shock you - it's getting you to focus on the characters and how they change (or retain their humanity) whilst being in these extreme conditions. This episode is by far the best in the show. I'm not complaining about run-time because, as I've stated before, it's more realistic (and matches the intensity) when it's drawn out. 6) B-plot/cop - Okay, so I do agree that the reveal at the end of this sub-plot was really underwhelming. 7) Old Man/Il-Nam - Now, I really have to disagree. Il-Nam was ready to die in the game - that's a big part of the thrill he gets. BUT he is not above rigging the game to ensure that the chances of his death are FAR LOWER than of everyone else. The whole point of this character teetering the line of 'im the same as everyone/im superior to everyone' is to represent the most powerful and wealthy as always playing by a different set of rules, whilst the poor are expected to rigidly follow them. 8) Il-Nam's motivation - Since the show is very evidently a critique of capitalism, I'm not surprised that it chooses not to give Il-Nam a super understandable reason for creating these games. I think the absurdity of his motivations actually mimics the way the ultra-wealthy can - at any point in time - give their wealth to multiple worthy causes, but just CHOOSE not to - because they think their wealth is deserved and everyone's else's misery is deserved too. Il-Nam was clear that everyone was participating with free will, so he never felt any guilt for any the consequences they faced in the game. The confession was frustrating by design - SG show creator does not want you to sympathise/empathise with Il-Nam, he wants you to be frustrated that you were duped. In conclusion, I think you've analysed the show in mere 'TV show trope' terms. Then, you've docked points against the show if they didn't subvert popular tropes. In the process, you ignore the deeper messaging of SG. SG is getting the hype because it can be both mindless entertainment AND put you in an ethical quandry for a week straight as you argue with yourself about Sang-woo's decisions and motivations. Sure, you're well within your rights to say that Parasite did it better, but Parasite is not a show on Netflix. It can't be a Top 5 show on Netflix. SG can, and has!

My theory about the girl being taken away and not killed is because the old man (who is a VIP) expected that nobody would choose him which is why he sits in the corner. The red guys figured he would not be chosen as well because of his age so to make the game fair, they decided to let anyone who was left behind in the marble game live. This is not the first time they would have done something on the old man’s behalf. For example, the old man shouted in the blackout stabbing that he wanted everything to stop because he was scared and that’s when the bad guys stopped the game. Anyway, just a thought as to why the girl survived that marble game and wasn’t shot. Great video!

It's very interesting how opinions on the hype of Squid Game are so split. I feel like one half was completely submerged in the show and just fascinated with everything, while the other half has a more somber point of view and therefore felt that it is a bit overrated. Interestingly, nobody has yet thought that it was bad or not enjoyable, which is a strong statement for the objective quality of the show.

The most impressive thing for me (aside from how much of the set was actually made with so little being CGI) was that the show found a happy medium between bright/vibrant/saturated colors that isn't washed out to the point of being pastel colors but also isn't straining on the eyes in a way I have yet to really see in live action media! The soldiers' uniforms were still dominant over the rest of the set and getou could still interpret the colors everywhere else as being strong, but not strong enough to set fire to your retinas. That is very hard to find (for me at least) in media, especially live-action media where realism can make editing too obvious and thus difficult to achieve. It gives me a lot more respect for live action, especially from Korea, so I'm very willing to look more into the genre. I know it sounds dumb to harp over such a thing, but to me it's a very big deal and worthy of a lot of praise.

i agree with your points. I would even forgive the "i was bored and wanted to have fun"-reveal, because in The Hunger Games, the rich people also watch the games for their enjoyment and i found it believable. But the big difference is, the kids games in squid game, in contrast to the hunger games, were mostly won by dumb luck. Like the marbles game and the glass stepping stones. Even the sugar game, because the shape the contestant randomly chose fundamentally influenced the difficulty level of the game. So the deaths are kinda pointless and random. Why, as a VIP, would i root for any of the contestants? Why would i care? In the hunger games, you can kind of comprehend why the rich want to watch the games. But with squid game, if even the smartes, strongest and best educated person can lose due to bad luck, i can also just go watch kids playing with marbles. Okay, you could argue that the old man is an insane psycho. Fair enough. But then i don't need to listen to him talking for 15 minutes with Gi Hun. Since he's nothing else than a psycho. I also hated that the battle, where the contestants just killed each other, was part of the game. This also doesn't make any sense, why would the old man want to be part of that? I thought he wanted to have fun with kids games? Again, he's just inconsistent and kinda random, so the reveal and the dialogue with gi hun is uninteresting to watch. I also hated that gi hun, the most boring character, was the only one surviving. And i was so annoyed by his utopian (most of all hypocritical) moral standards.

It is a decent show, but I do not understand the hype. I do not care about the shows setting whether it is the US, Korea or Africa that's just a background. To me there wasn't that much tension, I easily grasped what the game was about, I knew after the first few episodes who the finalists will be and I already knew that the old men was fishy and one of my guesses was that he is the or one of the instigators of the whole game. I also easily guessed that the brother the policemen was searching for is still alive and somehow actively involved in the games. After the first few episodes, I just watched the rest to see if everything panned out as I predicted and it did. The show was competently done, but there was nothing really new or unexpected, or some woah moment that I hadn't seen in many other movies or shows or some great lesson that we as an audience learned that we didn't already know. The hype is completely overrated ...

I can understand that, ik like the as well. However I can still enjoy the way it's presented. Like get out, you know from the jump that the white people are going to be bad guys and that the black guy was going to be in danger and was going to have to save himself. However, I like that they presented the bad guys as people who over feticized black culture and black people as a type of racism instead of what you usually see when you see racism portrayed in movies. Squid games had a lot of predictable things however you say that it doesn't matter where the movie came from but it does because there are cultural differences that affect the way a story goes in the way that a movie is filmed and what the people find important to show. Yes there are a lot of predictable parts however I enjoy tremendously getting to go into depth into these characters lives and personalities so much so that in episode 6 you are heart wrenched even though you know that half of these people are going to die because it is a death game. That doesn't stop it from being a tragedy. I think the newness for me was seeing average looking and older people in the death game. If you ever noticed in Hollywood they always tend to pick young and good looking people in these games and if they do have someone that looks like the characters In squid game they're almost always the bad guy or the most terrible out of the group. I also like the idea of giving them a choice to leave, they were given a choice twice and they chose to come back. I like the commentary about the desperation of humans and what they're willing to do for money and for survival. Showing that anyone can end up in a situation like this or in a situation of desperation so bad that you are willing to do anything to get out of it. There's also commentary on classism in Korea. It can apply to Americans but you can tell it's about Korean classism. Even the way characters are acted as s affected. I've seen reactors say that some people are over the top but the Korean language is extremely expressive and so are the Korean people with their movements and their actions.

They designed the rules in such a way that if there are odd no. of players which would lead to il nam being left out, he should still survive. And if we know anything about the game, it's that they give everyone equal treatment. So obviously the lady gets the same treatment.
