It’s also important to recognize that Stannis sees duty very differently than a lot of other characters. He doesn’t even seem to want to be king for himself. He’s only doing it because he’s next in line and that’s what he should do and so he does it without question. Stannis is that way with most things in his life, and he expects that others should act the same. In his mind, he shouldn’t have to ask Robb for help. Robb should be the one coming to him because it’s the right thing to do. Why should he have to beg for help that is customarily just given to a rightful heir, from a person that is rebelling against the throne? Same thing with Renly, although in that case Renly was being just as unreasonable. That’s how he sees things and it’s a mindset that stannis slowly begins to grow beyond as the books progress through the help of Davos, but by then it’s too late to ally with Robb and so instead he goes to Jon and offers him a very generous deal in exchange for his help.

It’s crazy to me how people view different characters so differently when they all make similar actions in regards to honor. When we meet Ned, he kills a man for running for his life from the Others and intends to kill dire wolf puppies, and yet because we love his children and see from the Stark POV, he instantly and consistently gets everyone’s support. Stannis is extremely similar to Ned and yet he is hated. Daenerys kills the Tarlys for treason and both of them are not at all kind people, yet people site a behavior like that as evidence of her madness. It fascinates how certain characters seem to garner full support from the audience and others who behave within the same confines of honor are mistrusted and hated.

@@daphneglasurus7886In the books it is stated that Ned believes that the Others have been gone for over 8000 years and that he believes that the deserter was lying. It is also stated that deserters will stoop to any level of evil because they know that they are marked men, doomed to die. Despite this he was still willing to send the letters to the deserter's family as he was asked. As for the wolf pups, it's important to keep in mind that these are actually direwolves which are known to grow MUCH larger than normal wolves and are more ferocious. Their mother has also been killed and so they would be doomed to starve or preyed upon either way, so killing them was in fact a mercy. Letting his children keep them as pets was a massive risk and he only agreed to keep them because Jon who pointed out that the animals are the symbols of his house, and that they were meant for his children, and he only accepted it because Jon had neglected to count himself as a Stark so that the pups would be saved. Even then, it wasn't until after Summer saved Bran from being assassinated that Ned started to believe that was true. It is also stated that the people in Winterfell are also unnerved by the wolves. As regards to your comparison of Ned and Stannis, it is important to note that Stannis acts out of justice (or rather fairness clouded by entitlement) and not honor. Honor would have prevented him from killing Renly, but he was able to do so, because Renly was denying him his right and so it was 'just' for him to die. Ned on the other hand would never have entertained the thought, as he was even willing to end the conflict with the Lannisters without bloodshed despite Renly and Littlefinger's urgings, and after even getting an outright confession from Cersei for the near killing of Bran. Ned is honorable while Stannis is guided by justice that is what seperates them. I didn't get far enough in the show or the books to know about the Tarlys so I can't speak on that.

Stannis in fact intends to execute them (possibly even give them to Mel) and while I am sure no one begrudges the fate of Joffrey, this includes Myrcella and Tomman who thus far have shown to be good natured.

Cressen's prologue POV is pretty sad and gave a glimpse of the life of a maester. They're supposed to be indifferent to the family they are serving but they are also human and it's not hard to develop attachment to a family you basically grew up in. He didn't had to do it but he personally believed Melissandre is tearing that family and resolved to get rid of her himself.

That's the problem with Stannis. He believes that everyone should support him because it is their duty, but when Ned Stark, being the king's Hand, called him to court, he did not fulfill his duty, and when Stark recognized him as king and was captured by the Lannisters, he did nothing to save his vassal. Stannis believes that the king should have no friends, and as a result sees that the lords are in no hurry to support him. He chooses the wrong ways to spread his influence, burning Septs and Weirwood, demanding the worship of the Red God. That's why Robb Stark, the Dornians, the Tyrells, and even his own brother don't want to support him. He is completely un-diplomatic, too narrow-minded and uncompromising.
@scoliosis9478
@scoliosis9478 3 ай бұрын
By the time Ned called him to court and was killed there was nothing Stannis could do. I mean the vid itself specifically states that Stannis didn’t get Neds message. I think this is a little uncharitable to Stannis. To him winning the throne unjustly is equally as grim as losing the fight for the throne. Robb is proclaiming two independent kingdoms when not even a decade before the story takes place the whole realm, and especially the Starks, fought a war against the Iron Islands specifically for the purpose of saying Kingdoms cannot break away from the throne. Obviously Stannis has a gruff personality and legalistic code of justice but he is definitely able to inspire love and loyalty in people. He couldn’t have held Storms End if the men of the garrison didn’t believe in him and he has people who have stuck with him from the defeat of the blackwater all the way through to the freezing conditions of the march on Winterfell. The main reason nobility doesn’t like him is as Varys says that he is a “truly just man” and they aren’t used to justice applying to them too. You can say his methods are impractical for winning the throne but I think he embodies a bit of heroism by not taking the easy way and being willing to lose if winning would mean compromising whats right.

@@scoliosis9478 Ned had summoned Stannis long before he was killed. And how could Stannis not receive the letter if he then immediately found out that Ned Stark supported him after Robert's death? Robb declared independence because his vassals demanded it of him, and the North helped suppress the Greyjoy rebellion because Ned and Robert were friends. And as a result, Joffrey is a bastard, and Renly and Stannis did not help rescue Ned Stark from the Capital, although there were plenty of chances. No wonder the Northerners and rivermen did not support the Baratheons. Your rhetoric contradicts itself. A rude and uncompromising person is not capable of instilling love and devotion. The book and the series proved it. The fact that the lords and knights of Stormlands are loyal to him even after Blackwater speaks to their vassal oath. They were not loyal to him when Renly was alive, which already proves their position. The main reason for the dislike of the nobles for him is not in Varys, but in the wrong policy of Stannis. He burns septs and weirwoods, the more he turns the lords against him. He does not try to make alliances, although he understands perfectly well that he will not succeed without them. Despite the fact that you see the heroic in Stannis's actions, it still won't help him achieve power.

It’s pretty obvious that Stannis idolized his older brother and wanted recognition for his devotion to him. Ned was always Robert’s equal and most trusted friend. Stannis never understood that, his sense of justice is too brittle, he does more wrongs than rights with that mentality, in his mind, everything has to be in some totalitarian order. Yes, it would be just, but Stannis is far from fair, because he doesn't recognise people's tendencies, wants needs. All he sees is duty. There was this scene from the books, I think it was Baelish, said that Stannis wanted to abolish brothels and ban whoring completely, because it was against the laws of gods and men. And what do you expect him to do? Jon arryn was murdered and it looked like the lannisters were responsible. If he stayed in Kings landing he would have been vulnerable and would likely have ended up like jon and ned did. If he tried telling robert it would have looked like stannis was grasping for power. So he did his best to consolidate what power he had.

In the books Stannis and Jon knew the parentage of cersei's children, but he knew how the game was played. Going out in the open would just paint a target in his back. Taking into account that since Robert has no legitimate children he would be next in line for the crown, while true could be interpreted by others as a way to seize said crown.

he literally told the hand of the king, what more do you want him to do? When Jon Arryn dies, he obviously thinks hes next because he didnt know Baelish and Lysa killed Jon Arryn instead of the Lannisters. He cant tell Robert because Robert wouldnt believe him without Jon Arryns backing, proved when Robert immediately heads North to ask Ned to be Hand instead of Stannis who was on the Council the whole time.
@davidlewis5312

the whole point of demonstrating this to Jon Arryn was to get Jon to convince Robert of the treachery, as Stannis was perfectly aware of what this would look like to Robert if he brooched the subject directly. I am sure he would have done the same with Ned but then Lysa kills Jon Arryn, Stannis thinks it's Cersei, HECK Pycelle thought it was Cersei and covered it up thus making it look EVEN MORE like it was Cersei.

Aegon the Conqueror may have already conquered most of the Seven Kingdoms, but he was not named King until he knelt before the High Septon and was granted that title by The Faith. Aegon had to at least nominally convert and agree to rule in accordance with the Faith of the Seven. Stannis broke that tradition when he converted to the religion of R'hllor, which in the eyes of most Westerosi means giving up any claim to the Iron Throne. Granted, the folk in the North who follow the Old Gods would not care so much about that, but Stannnis burning Hearttrees is also a dealbreaker for them.

Stannis doesn't even try to tell Eddard or Robert anything and is just waiting for his chance to claim the throne over Ned and Robert's corpses. Stannis comes across to me as a bitter, jealous, and vengeful mongrel who deserves nothing and Robert was right in bypassing Stannis and giving Storm's End/Stormlands to Renly. The North and The Riverlands were right in declaring their Independence... All hail The King of The North and The Trident

Dragon Rulers have been power crept. I can see them coming back to two or unlimited and being relevant, but not over powered. The issue is all the dragon, light and dark, and dragon light and dark support. You just can’t have unlimited Dragon Rulers with modern dragon support. I don’t think it would be tier zero, but definitely overwhelming a bit. I like Stannis but the fact that he considers Robb as a traitor is really irritating, not even mentioning his absurd bitterness towards Eddard. Because Ned had nothing to do with Robert's mistreatment towards Stannis. In fact, Ned was the only one who defended and supported Stannis when no one else did. Stannis doesn't know this of course, but still. As readers, we know it and it makes Stannis unlikable as a character.

Stannis might not like Ned, but he does acknowledge he was a good and honorable man and swears to avenge him. I think some of his nastier comments early on are in part due to the fact he's in grief for his brother's death (even if he won't admit it) and frustration that Ned's son turned against him. Also, how is Robb not a traitor? I sympathize with him, but it's undeniable he's committing high treason

Ned had nothing to do with Robert's mistreatment towards Stannis after all, but Stannis is still angry with him even after his death anyway. Also, Robb's "treason" case is quite arguable. But I wouldn't consider him a traitor. Because after everything that's happened to North, there was no way to keep it dependent.
