When Bronn tells Tyrion he won’t fight for him, he foreshadows Oberyn’s death. He says maybe he’d get lucky and dance around the Mountain until he gets tired and drops his sword. “Get him off his feet somehow, but one misstep and I’m dead.” Described Oberyn’s fight exactly 😢

Oberyn is 100% Pedros best acting performance, he left such an impact in just 1 season, he made season 4 the best season tbh.

I absolutely loved Oberyn but in hindsight I'm kind of happy that his journey ended in season 4 so D&D couldn't mess up this brilliant character. Same goes for Tywin.

The scene when he accepts to fight for Tyrion literally gave me goosebumps 🔥💯🔥

Any character who can make Tywin the not most interesting character in the room is a force to be reckoned with!

Even Oberyn's "weakness" is likeable -- he loved his sister and her children so much that even after years he is still seeking vengeance for their gruesome deaths. He would go up in public, accuse one of the, if not THE, most powerful men in the realm and call them out on this injustice and frankly war crime that has been committed against his family. His quest is just and we feel for him as the audience. We root for him. We want so much for him to succeed. And his failure and death is devastating in itself, but amplified because it was tied to Tyrion's fate as well, another very well liked character. George really shined in creating Oberyn.

In the fight scene I was so hype up for him winning, to the point I felt that something could go wrong here, and it did. I remembered staring blank into the ceiling in despair, felt like everything is so numb for minutes after the episode ended. GOT was truly at its peak back then.

this vid made me realise he is an example of the exact same trope grrm used with Rob Stark, a competent likable character who in any other story would be the chosen one but loses because of one simple mistake. I think its George Martin satirizing the fantasy cliches we like. in any other show they would be Aragorn.

Oberyn was the highpoint of season 4 for me, and his death was such a surprise

GRRM plays with Stereotypes and pre-conceived expectations so well, for example Oberyn is like an adventurous bisexual playboy that likes partying, but he has this ultimate and pure goal of avenging his sister, he's an insanely skilled warrior but he prefers to plan things out and murder people with poison rather than just overpower them, it's like he melds all kinds of different characters into one.

Pascal made Oberyn seem so free and relaxed. Even has he was in the den of vipers that was King's Landing.

You just reminded me of the good days of GoT and explained perfectly why I like Oberyn so much. In those days of GoT, it had huge consequences if a character made a mistake and I felt excited and scared for Oberyn to take on the Mountain. I still remember yelling at the screen "finish him" as Oberyn started circling the Mountain. I knew he wasn't safe until the Mountain was dead and then IT happened and Oberyn lost. After that I just sat in silence trying to understand how everything had changed for Tyrion. The next day at school me and my friends talked about it all day. Pedro Pascal put in a great performance and GoT really was at it's peak.

How does Oberyn hating the Lannisters paint him more like a villain? By that time, we already hate most of the Lannisters and seeing Oberyn, a new character, willingly and openly stand up to them wins us over. So him being a good guy isn't really a twist.

It was really cool having a character show up so far into the show, that seemed so morally good. Most of the characters in the show were enemies to our main protagonist, so it was nice having this force of nature enter out of nowhere and attempt to fight against the lannisters.

He is really my favorite character in all of Game of Thrones, you can’t forget him. He’s great.

I was a teenager during the show… Oberyns death literally gave me nightmares. Yeah it was gruesome, but that wasn’t why it haunted me. I had become so enveloped in his character and his motives. How he delivered his lines and the morals of his character. His willingness to stand up to the “Golden Lion” made his death for me so absolutely heart crushing. I’d have the same nightmare of his head being crushed, followed by the screams of his woman and then me waking up. Truly a great and relatable character. I felt like I’d lost a friend. I literally mourned him, I was that hurt hurt over his death.

I think there's no doubt that George RR Martin can write some of the most well written characters of all time

He's definitely a phenomenal character

They did him very well from the book. In the book he is mostly a man of legend. Many of the KL high borns have only heard of him and his deeds and adventures. That he is a warrior to fear and admire, that he is willful and courageous but also very proud and dangerous. I like that the show gave him a lot of minutes to expand on him. The only thing I would have done in the show (and it’s not even necessary) is just talk more about his legend, his sellsword days, his daughters, his duels and his knowledge of poison but even without that, he was brilliantly adapted.

Oberyn Martell was one of my favourite characters from the show. When I started reading the books, he became even more so. One of the most interesting things for me was reading the books and discovering the true purpose of Oberyn's visit to Kings Landing. Yes, he wanted revenge for his sister (he says that repeatedly), but he also seemed to be trying to provoke the Lannisters into harming him(?)so that it could give Dorne justification for starting a war with them. He perhaps was even trying to sow division between them by supporting Tyrion and being his champion (at the time probably thinking that he was going to win the fight), knowing that that would provoke Tywin and Cersei as he already knew that they didn't like Tyrion very much. If Oberyn had won the fight, he might've succeeded in that goal. He was definitely in Kings Landing for some specific purpose like that, otherwise why would his brother, Doran, send him of all people on his behalf? Doran knew Oberyn's temperament and knew what he was doing when he sent him there. Doran is the grass that hides the viper (Oberyn) before he strikes. The fact that Tywin was shitting himself before he died was probably because of Oberyn, and the mere subtlty of that kind of conspiracy tells me that Doran was involved as well. I don't know. This comment was supposed to be about how much I miss that character, but now here we are, discussing conspiracies. I miss all of those characters actually, and that world. George needs to finish those books and give us the ending that we all deserve dammit!

He was so excellent, it's a damn crying shame what they did to the rest of the Dornish characters once he was gone.

I didn't even realize that Season 4 happened before Narcos, I couldn't believe it at first. Don't get me wrong, I like Narcos and Pedro Pascal in it, but Oberyn feels like such a perfect and complete performance, I'm astonished it's his first major role.

Pedro basically came into a show with a full spectrum of well-established characters played by outstanding actors... then proceeded to knock it out of the park. It's a pretty mean feat to join the cast of one of the most popular shows of all time, at it's height no less, and still manage to stand out and have such a massive impact on the show.

The characters who were only around for one season were easily the strongest: Oberyn, Ned, Bobby B, Drogo. Oberyn was actually a breath of fresh air for many reasons, but especially because we hadn't had a similar character since Ned, Bobby B, and Drogo all died in season 1. Honestly, once Oberyn died in season 4, other single-season characters never held a candle to these four.

Disliking the Lannisters does not make the audience think the character is a villain. Quite the opposite.

I still think the conversation Oberyn and Tyrion had in the cell was one of the best scenes in the show, its my personal favorite. Tyrion is one of my favorite characters and it felt good to see a character empathize with him along with Oberyn having his own motive to get involved in the situation.

I was an Ice and Fire reader so when Oberyn was introduced on the show he didn’t look how I pictured him in my head. But that feeling ended pretty quickly. Pedro Pascal owned the character. He was the quintessential “renaissance man.” The guy men want to be like and women want to be with.

Oberyn has always been in my top 3 favourite GoT characters. Like you say, from the moment he appears, and for the entire season, he's just 10/10. I could be wrong but I think I recall Pedro Pascal saying his first scene that he filmed was the monologue!

I remember the day I watched that episode, after THAT scene I just sat there for 10 minutes and then met with a friend in a middle of the night just to sit there in silence and share that feeling lol Oberyn was one of my favorite characters and I’m so happy for Pedro Pascal now ❤ I remember having a screensaver of someone’s art of Oberyn and his paramour (I forgot her name) kissing with dead Mountain in the background 😍

Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer...unless you're Oberyn, his overconfidence got him done and dead quick af. For a character that only appeared for a single season, he's absolutely phenomenal, a wonderful study from a writing perspective on how to introduce and progress a character and making it awesome even with limited screen-time. GOT has a lot of limited-time characters that still manage to steal the spotlight whenever they appear - Olenna being one of them, for example.

I sobbed, SOBBED, when he agreed to be Tyrion's champion. I liked him and found him a compelling character before but that moment sealed my forever love of that character (and Pedro's performance). The one GOT character death I still haven't gotten over.

It felt weird to me for a long time because he didn't have as much screentime as other amazing characters, but there just never has been a character i've been more obsessed with. What also adds up to his overall greatness is that despite his hatred of the lannisters, he is capable of empathising with Tyrion AND Cercei, the later shown in his dialogue about his daughter, to the point that I legitimately think that if Cercei ended up with Oberyn, she wouldn't be as fucked up and her life would be much happier

FWIW, I still love seeing new takes and new info about GoT. The show ended... badly... and I know the way the ending was handled caused it to drop off the radar for a lot of people, but I still rewatch often and I love the world they created.

I remember watching him fight the mountain, even though I had read the books twice at that point, Pedro was so good I thought for a moment he might win this, he doesn't have to die, the show might be different..then BAM splat there goes his head. His death was heart breaking. Dorne as I understood it is analogous to Al-Andalus IRL. His mannerisms, bad boy vibe, disobedience and esthetics are all reminiscent of Alfa energy in Morrorco and Southern Spain, and Portugal to a lesser extent. I found myself rooting for him but the moment he walked into that arena I knew it was gonna be the end.

I loved this guy so much, and was cheering for him the most I have in that excellent series, and his death was by far the saddest (although Robb’s was heart wrenching.

I would definetly love to see more GoT content, Im sad S8 killed all the hype around it, cause being in the community disccusing episodes characters theories and future plots was one of the must fun times ever in my life.

The scene where the brothel guy tells oberyn that “everyone has a preference” (when it comes to sexuality) and he responds with “then everyone is missing half the world’s pleasure” is such a beautiful and nuanced exploration of sexuality and attraction. I really love this show for treating lgbtq characters with care; depicting the harsh realities and judgement we face (with Loras) while also showing through Oberyn that people like us can still find joy and pleasure even in such a cruel world, without ever feeling unrealistic. It’s super nice and refreshing to see, and we always love to see a pansexual pedro pascal
