Why Sunshine’s Volcano is the Worst Level Nintendo Ever Made.

Nintendo built countless games over the decades, and Nintendo designed even more different stages for all those Nintendo games. Most of those games ended up being good, some ended up being weird, some were bad, and some are considered to be among the best games ever released. Yet out of all those games, featuring thousands over thousands of different levels, it is my honest belief that the volcano in Super Mario Sunshine is the absolute worst level Nintendo ever crafted, and that is not only because the level itself is bad. This isn’t just the story of how Nintendo crafted a bad in Super Mario Sunshine, an otherwise great game. This is a story of how Nintendo was showering in gasoline while playing with tindersticks. As I see it the volcano in Super Mario Sunshine is that one time, Nintendo came dangerously close to actually burning down their entire company.

The boat section gets 1000% easier if you use a speedrun strategy called "speedboat", funnily enough. This strategy involves pushing against every instinct you have and just going to the back of the boat and spraying full throttle, using small left and right movements to adjust your heading. It's really funny to me because it is *genuinely easier* than the way casual players drive the boat, even on your first try, but no casual player would ever, unprompted, choose to do it because it's an utterly ridiculous thing to do, going full throttle on a boat you're already struggling to control.

Situations like this also bring up interesting design philosophy questions. For instance, when remastering a flawed game, is it worth improving rushed aspects and fixing old bugs, or is it more important to keep the original intact as much as possible under a fresh coat of aesthetic paint? I know which approach I'd prefer every time, but it's not so straightforward as it seems.

I've got a bone to pick with the Pachinko section. I've been modding Super Mario Sunshine for a while now, and in terms of mechanics, there is nothing in Pachinko that is actually broken. The reason Mario gains so much speed at the top of the 'machine' is because there's a trigger area placed there which gives Mario the speed. While this does make the stage pretty tedious, there isn't anything broken about the stage. The trigger area actually does what it's supposed to do, and it can easily be removed with certain tools. Doing so does make the game somewhat more playable, although it does get considerably harder to get the red coin in the top right of the 'machine', which I assume is why it's there. Lastly, this comment isn't supposed to be me throwing shade at you or your opinions, I just really wanted to clarify this
@dancinswords
@dancinswords 3 жыл бұрын
Whether "the trigger area actually does what it's supposed to do," is a matter of perspective. If you define "what it's supposed to do" narrowly, as imparting the acceleration, then it's not broken. But you could also define it at a broader level, that it's supposed to contribute to an enjoyable experience, in which case it seems to not be working right. Something can be broken because of a purposeful design choice which does itself function as intended, but which ultimately conflicts with the purpose of the overall design
@henkwasmachine1373
@henkwasmachine1373 3 жыл бұрын
@@dancinswords that may be true, but the point I'm trying to make is that in terms of mechanics, nothing is actually broken. The level itself may be considered broken by some, but there is objectively nothing in the level that's not working as it should

@xPanda25 3 жыл бұрын
@@henkwasmachine1373 you are using a different definition of "broken" entirely than Ceave clearly was. That mechanic may work just fine for the top right coin etc., but it breaks the top left coin which breaks the flow of the game, and really breaks immersion if you're struggling to complete a stage due to poor game design (such as a badly placed accelerator trigger) rather than skill/etc.

@@henkwasmachine1373 You also can't necessarily determine if something's working "as it should" by looking at what's there. You can determine what it does, but what it _should_ do is a matter of the intent of the designer. Video game elements can literally only ever do what they're programmed to. Even game-breaking glitches are the product of things doing what they're programmed to do. Clearly the standard for "working" can't be merely that it does what it does

I dunno. The last few Pokemon titles lost quite a few features present from other games and they only innovated a half hearted open world area and the overly broken giant pokemon. Game Freak couldn't even be bothered to animate their now drastically and intentionally shrunk roster. Their pokemon exhibit as much life as their lackluster linear level designs. Nexomon has created a more adult world for monster tamers, without relying on the oppressive handholding found in pokemon titles. And it's story actually holds a bit of weight and draws you in, something I haven't experienced since Soul Silver. Monster Sanctuary is a monster taming game with Metroidvania style level design and progression. That is innovative, as the side scrolling platforming goes well paired with the three on three battles. There are other games out there that are working to take monster taming to the next level, they just don't have Game Freaks lazy work ethic. So we may actually see some growth from this genre in our lifetime. Games like TemTem are trying to push what we can do with multiplayer, Kindred Fates is also looking great with its more action style combat. And there are literally dozens more I fail to name from memory. Look up things like the Dexit or the GameFreak Lied controversies. Search KZfaq for videos about the latest games like Sword and Shield, and you will hear quite a bit of criticism lobbied at the newer titles, especially the most recent ones. The feeling of stagnation is felt by more and more as the series progresses without any real or meaningful inmovations.

@@chamtheman551 Well, it has a successor, so... I'm much more curious as to why they already pulled the plug on "major updates" for Mario Maker 2.

This channel has experienced one of the biggest 180’s in terms of the tone of the quality of their videos, and I’m all for it. I’ve always been a fan of your more laid back silly content but your recent, more serious content concerning topics that a lot of people would gloss over has been really good. It’s been very nice to see the evolution of your channel, because while your previous content was already pretty good, your new content is much more impressive Thanks for all of your great content, and continue making exceptional videos like this one. The passion and drive behind your new videos has been very very tangible and I think you deserve way more subscribers.
