I’m glad she deciphered “decodable text” because the term is so ambiguous and subjective. The term has always confused me a little, in the back of my mind, so it’s great to hear her challenge it. 😊

I think what this shows is the importance of teaching direct and explicit phonics to kids and in a repetitive nature, so that they can get a good handle on decoding words to help them become fluent readers. Without the skills decoding any text will be difficult for children. We must teach the phonics skills they need. I have a great question. Why has education shifted from spelling in language arts? I know for a fact that spelling is how I learned to read or decode words. Spelling and phonics goes hand in hand if you ask me. I could be wrong.

Good question! There has definitely been a shift in the last couple of years. I encourage you to read more about "Science of Reading." Here's a blog I recently wrote - learningattheprimarypond.com/blog/what-do-all-these-terms-mean-a-dive-into-the-science-of-reading/

Hi Alison, I was watching your videos and I'm trying to learn more about phonological awareness and blending sounds. I just taught the last 2 days of First-grade class. I noticed that my students are deficient in reading and I would like to help them improve more because the school year is almost over. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
