Great video as usual Daniel. One thing I'll add is that isolation plays usually result in fewer turnovers, so they're considered more "safe" because you're more guaranteed to get a shot off and have less have a chance of the possession resulting in a fast break for the other team.

The best thing about isolation is that it minimizes the chances for turnovers which means you're gonna get a shot. It also helps that the guy holding the ball is your best scorer/finisher. Iso ball isnt just for everyone, and that's what makes James Harden's 3 scoring title all the more impressive.

This video only discusses one positive outcome of switching, it doesn't tell the negative effect of when the offense intentionally forces a switch to isolate against a much smaller, worse defender and take them to school. Teams that switch a lot can't hide bad players on defense and a good, versatile offense can really punish a team that switches too liberally.

You forgot one more reason why teams tend to iso more in the 4th quarter of a close game: reduce the risk of turnovers (which can fuel an opposing team’s easy fastbreak points) Even the best ball movement teams like the 2015-2019 warriors and 2013-2014 spurs had moments in close playoff games where they would just get the ball to their best scorer to reduce turnovers. Like most ppl hold the 2014 spurs at the gold standard of modern ball movement, but forget that in game 6 vs okc that year, at the end of the game on the road, it was very close, so pop decided to just put duncan on the left block and feed him repeatedly like it was 1999.

Nice video. I do think ego of the stars also play into it a bit, because man are there some just horrible isolations at the end of quarters and games sometimes, the "clear out because I GOT THIS" type hero ball that some guys feel they need to do, and the success rate of those plays are dreadful, even in the playoffs. Isolations with ball movement and cutters can be interesting and work, Isolatons with 4 guys just standing around isn't nearly as successful. Ironically, your example of the Suns game where Booker got cut off after the dribble handoff, not only was Ayton WIDE open under the basket (Crowder was way too slow on the pass), after he got the ball the guy in the corner (I think it was Cam Johnson) was even more wide open. That play should have been at least 2 points and instead Ayton kind of panicked and put up a bad little bunny, so the play was fine the guy who hit a ton of shots in the paint during the playoffs just missed it.

I would say there are 3 reasons: 1. In the playoffs, only the best players with the highest chance of success are doing the iso's, which increases the average effectiveness. Whereas in the regular season, less capable players are involved, and therefore bring the percentages down. 2. Switching and help defense - If one team is constantly switching, then the stars are going to seek out the weakest defender and try to make them guard one on one, which is practically impossible and will break down eventually. If the help comes, that means someone else is open. The iso is therefore a simple way to exploit a weakness, and create opportunities. 3. There are no secrets in the NBA. Everyone knows your set plays, and has a plan to blow them up. At the end of a long game, or a long series, both teams know everything about eachother. All that is left at that point is to fall back on skill and improvisation to try and get an advantage.

Great analysis. But Iso is basically a reaction to switching defenses. Clippers had a lot of success this year, even without Leonard, thanks to their switching defense. Milwuakee same too. In some parts of the finals Giannis/Portis were playing 5 to switch on Paul/Booker. There is no way you can win without switching, because when it's playoff time you need a "small" starting five, or maybe with a quick big as Portis or Capela. I think that the Rockets project, made by D'Antoni, was a bit underlook. That's the same way Clippers, Brooklyn, and Milwuakee (sometimes) played defensively.

On a general note, you only have to beat 1 guy, the game becomes 1v1 instead of 5v5. And offense always have the upperhand, most players play defense reactionary. It's easier to play offense w/o getting called offensive foul than playing defense w/o getting called defensive foul. On a more detailed level, you'll want your superstars to carry your team. Not all players are made for last minute situations. Having a rhythm off your shot is key and most last minute shots are not catch and shoot. The defense will play a tighter man to man and as a defender you'll rather not gamble on leaving the guy on weakside open. This tighter man to man defense makes sense for teams to play iso, any bad rotations will be spotted easily and punished. But I'd rather just see it as a 1v1 and the best player wins. My superstar using a variety of his go to moves (step back, fadeaway, floater, post move, quick first step) to seal the win while the defense can just play ... defense.

Great look at how the overall numbers are misleading wrt playoff efficiency. Isos usually are a "bail out" with little shot clock time left during the regular season as well --meaning less eff %. Super interesting to see KD's PPP go *down* as his isos increase. Just speaks to how great he is playing off ball in and in a team offense. Can really plug him in anywhere.

yeah, he's obviously a great iso scorer as well. But what takes him apart from the other great scorers like harden is his offball and within-the-system offense. Steph is the same as well but less iso skill imo

When Kobe said (regarding how Harden played with the Rockets - when CP3 was out): "I don't think that style is ever going to win championships" Kobe wasn't necessarily saying don't ISO Just don't ISO all the time Kobe learned to trust team mates and create for them, as well as bringing his offball movement, for his 4th + 5th rings

Re-watch the series. Harden actually created A LOT for teammates, GSW was just too good.

@@xstatic6 yes he did - I think that is a fair point However I feel they're out of movement or team flow Eg; yes he'll roll with Capela, but a lot of the time other players are standing around in case the D collapses on Harden's drive That is a hard way to get buckets as "the others". Standing around waiting for Harden to make something happen, and if he doesn't then taking a shot with the shot clock low +++ I was hoping that the Rockets would beat the Warriors, for what it's worth :) And I think they would have if CP3's hamstring didn't fail him Yes, that GSW squad was definitely stacked and well coached

Why do people need this video. Isolation should be a obvious the best ball handler or shooter should be separated for clutch plays.

Also after a switch, there's potentially a worse matchup, leading to more isos in the playoffs?
@sfasfads

That's the tradeoff with the switch. The defense loses the ability to chose matchups to stunt the offensive system. Otherwise it's fight through screens or surrender the 4 on 3. It doesn't seem intuitive that teams would save their best plays for the final moments of a playoff season, so they rely on the spontaneity of their best offensive players.

Would love to know what PPP players like Carmelo Anthony get from ISO ball And whether it is as high as Kobe and Harden Did Carmelo just suffer from doing it too much, but it was actually good at it? And team ball is a better way in the regular season? Very interesting

Melo isn’t the best ball handler and can’t always beat guys off the dribble which forces him to settle for tough long 2s
