A group of billionaires has proposed building a new city in California’s east Solano County halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento. The project, called the East Solano Plan, would provide affordable housing and jobs to as many as 400k people, and the investors behind it are the founders of some of the world’s biggest tech companies. But why would they go from funding startups to an entire city? The Hustle's Noelle Medina road trips to Solano County to find out.

The billionaires will buy the politicians to approve the zoning change...and give tax breaks as well as tax dollars from the community and guarantee loans for the developers 🤑

The reason there's no housing there already is because it's windy, uninhabitable, has barely any road access, and it's extremely hot and dry in summer. It's a train wreck in progress. It's not even used as farm land. Leave it as grazing land.

There is so much more that pertains to the story. Is a Solano County resident, mostly a blue-collar County, 95% of the people in Solano County want nothing to do with California Forever/East Solano plan. Yes they have two names so they can put their smoke and mirrors on. They've already lied to our local wildlife foundation by sending them a check with no paperwork and then slapping their name on posters without permission. California forever has multiple lawsuits because they bullied people out of their land. This agriculture land is the green belt for Fairfield and Suisun. This project will also take 30 years and increase the traffic tenfold. The environmental impact would be extremely dangerous. The property that they also built surrounds Travis Air Force Base, which is the a threat to the base and the bass is not happy about it. Solano has a very strong community in California forever. I don't think ever expected the war they're entering.

The land is definitely not agricultural. They grow no crops on it and livestock rarely grazes on it. The development also poses no more threat to Travis than Fairfield (which has already developed some areas right up to the gates). The only area where increased traffic will be noticeable is on HWY 12, but it will probably be expanded to accommodate. In my opinion, this development will breath some fresh air into Solano as it slowly turns into a suburban hellscape. Obviously, these billionaires should have been more transparent about the whole ordeal, but oh well. - Another Solano County resident

@@Monkeytacular You should probably look up the definition of agriculture first & foremost. To say livestock barely grazes the area is an outright fallacy. It sounds as if you’re a casual user of highway 12 which isn’t a put down, but rather a statement of how a cover of a book doesn’t tell the whole story. If you venture off of highway 12 towards Dixon there are numerous cattle ranches, buffalo ranches, lamb ranches & goat ranches. All of which graze the vast majority of the area desired by California forever. The sad part is that generations of farmers will be forced to part with their land & livelihoods in what is shaping up to be one of the largest land grabs in state history. I’m actually curious where all the environmentalist law suits are given that some of the project would encompass parts of the delta estuary.

When all that land is changed away from farm land, it's gone forever. That's lots of food that is not going to be produced

I fully plan to vote NO. Whether or not this is a China backed plan or not, it is to close to Travis, and they could picked any other land in the area as all that area is farmland, so I dont believe it.

Need to help our kids have Careers, Careers, and old people really can’t live in Solano because their housebound. Unless you healthy enough to drive the mass transit system here stinks. We definitely need to do something about upgrading our infrastructure and transportation systems. My daughter has to walk almost 2-miles to catch a bus. I had to drive my three kids to schools for 18-years because our transit system isn’t student friendly.

It’s long overdue! So many twenties and thirty’s young talented people are stuck in the rut of lousy low paying service and minimum wage poverty jobs. Our future is not in our past, as a Vietnam 100% Disabled Veteran if we don’t have a car what choices are there?

We shouldn’t be building homes on farm / grazing lands in California. We will need more food in the future. The billionaires bought this land because it’s the cheapest way to build their new city and make billions more for their investment.

You get to be a billionaire in most cases by offering people goods and services they desire, or by investing in entrepreneurs who create businesses giving consumers goods and services they desire.

I'm voting NO! There are not enough roads, not enough infrastructure to support it. They play it up like this will help solve Bay Area's housing crisis. BS. The poor policies of the Bay Area created the housing crisis. It's not on innocent Solano County to fix it. We are in the Bay Area but not of the Bay Area. And we like it that way. And it's all marketing. The investors just want to score a big pile of cash. No thanks.
