The Telfar bag has risen to become the year’s definitive it-bag. But to put it in the same category as Chloé Paddingtons and Balenciaga City bags hardly does it justice: the work of a highly conceptual designer, and with a statement of industry-disrupting inclusivity sewn into every stitch, the Telfar bag represents much more than your average, eye-wateringly expensive tote.

I love how committed Telfar is to the principle of accessibility, all the way down to the supply chain and manufacturing. I think this business model is almost one of those utopian fantasies, but Telfar is proof positive that it can work. Most companies just wouldn’t take that risk, and even Telfar was operating at a loss in the beginning. But I hope more designers and brands can start exploring this aspect of luxury; that luxury is about the collective imaginary and the way a product embodies that, more so than an arbitrary exclusivity imposed by an exorbitant price tag. I love my Telfar bag, would love it more so if it was leather-I wonder if there’s other options in terms of a textile that is sustainable, affordable, and vegan? My real major gripe with it is that THE STRAP IS TOO LONG!!!!! But I’m like 5’4 and it’s my fault for being 5’4 and I will carry this damn bag and have it hanging against my upper thigh and still move through the world feeling I have everything I need at hand in my colossal tote with its non-adjustable strap. Either way, Telfar is still relatively new as a brand, and I look forward to seeing what they do next, especially as they’ve refined their business model and made their supply chain a bit more robust. I really vibe with their aesthetic, their ethos, and I find that their creations fit in with the ‘everydayness’ that I like for my wardrobe. Is it too cringe to say that Telfar is one of those brands that reminds me that with the limited agency we have in this neoliberal hell, we can at least buy into an idea and feel like we’re part of something greater than ourselves?

I been thinking a lot about the culture surrounding luxury and trendy fashion and I hate it. I believe fashion to be an art that tells a story and I love how Telfar promotes that the status symbol of the bag is about identity and experience. That artistic element combined with creating a quality product is what I believe luxury to truly be and what I wanna promote in my future brand. Sidenote, I really reallyy enjoy your videos and how you provide history, relevant quotes, numbers, etc in a way that is informative, interesting and to the point. I love the focus on accessibility, but I do wonder how high quality the faux leather is? It would be a shame if a few years from now the telfar bags start filling up landfills because they've starting cracking and breaking. I'm pretty ignorant on whether fake leather can be made in a high quality way though so maybe my concern is misplaced. Great video as usual!
@BlackbirdVizion
@BlackbirdVizion 4 жыл бұрын
Ive had a black one for about 6 months. Tbh quality isn’t great the faux leather chips and scratches pretty easily, exposing this grey material underneath; it doesn’t look great. I can’t see it lasting as long as leather goods. Although it’s cheap in comparison to bags it’s still made in China and smells like plastic when you first get it.

Faux leather definitely can be made well. I'm vegan and I only buy leather secondhand so most of my purchases are faux leather. Stella McCartney bags hold up, Matt and Nat holds up and I have vegan docs 🙂 the process of making polyethurane is not always good for the environment from what I heard, but as far as holding value imo it does depending on the brand!

I have a grey one bought early this year. used it almost everyday for about 2 months before covid hits. scratchings and peelings at the corner are there. especially at the bottom of the bag. but none on the handles. It could really just me using it like a normal tote instead of a leather bag, aka I don't baby it like people would with their LV or BV. besides the outer material, the construction of the bag is very good imo. so I have been meaning to do some reinforcement at the corners and the scratches, also as a mean to customising my bag. the great size and good construction, together with the price point makes me want to keep using this bag and adding more character to it for at least a few years to come

I completely agree about your vision about what luxury should be, that is to say very high quality products rather than a price indicator (Shoutout Virgil I see you). All the things I knew about was Telfar so far was taken from Loïc Prigent's video, so I thank you to still be this informative. I've not studied in depth Telfar's collection; still I think he brings kind of a fresh air in this industry. He seems to have a great personality, ti be humble and above all, genuine and I think that is the main point because nowadays, people favor authenticity, that may sound paradoxical in such a post-Instagram society, but I actually think that among all these fakes, what becomes rare is authenticity. Therefore being authentic and genuine is almost always a winning way to do things. As you mentioned, Clement is really involved in the communities he promotes and his approach of denying exclusivity in a time where everyone looks after exclusivity, demonstrate that he's got values and that's not the majority in his industry e specifically about the Bag itself, I appreciate the design but I don't think I'll buy one any soon, the price though, really surprised me, it's kind of affordable, I mean 257$ at max, that's a statement itself. Well here there is another designer I'll probably support in the future in a way or another Thank you Ayo for another great video, I'm looking forward to seeing your first magazine, I hope it comes very soon, and see you for the next video ! Peace !

I adore your channel- I learn so much. I’ll be a mag & tote bad pre-orderer. I’m older, so hv a good grasp on “older fashion” but you help me stay on top of the ‘younger gens’ which I ❤️. Plus, your sensibility, whether looking at the ‘olds’ or ‘young’s’ is so refreshing. Going to become a Patreon ✅🌻 Please keep the great info/profiles coming- and BTW, I’d love to get a Telfar bag!! While I appreciate high-end bags, my personal Vice is finding fun vintage- cusp brands of the mid-century. The Telfar vibe & bag motto speak to me. May nd to wait until next August to order though 😩(but thx for that info!)

Imo I never understood the hype. The bag is a basic design and based on reviews of the longevity of the bag, the quality seems quite low. The designer and what the brand stands for is amazing. I just feel it’s kinda lacking and the big TC logo is somewhat tacky, but that is just my opinion; I’m not a fan of big logos on merchandise.

Loved the video. Thank you so much for talking about telfar as I think brands like telfar will be the new big name houses. I mean at least I think that in the future they'll hold more relevance than for example LV or Burberry because of their ability to adapt (I mean that bag security system was absolutely ingenious) and generally to speak to a younger more diverse audience who just aren't interested in brands like that anymore. Also congrats on the magazine and the tote bags, really looking forward to support you in that 😍

By studying sociology and branding, I've learned that consumers are not passive, they're active, they have more access to information, they have a bigger knowledge about certain things and they can build easily their opinions and that's way they're expecting from brands to be more engage to important matters like global warming and the black lives Matter movement. They're asking them not to be impartial, instead they should take a position. In a world where unfortunately there are still forms of racism, Telfar is one of the modern fashion brands that are trying to promote inclusivity in a genuine way and that's way the brand is gaining a well deserved success. Other than that, I think telfar's bags are veeeeery practical, they can be used not only by people interested in fashion, but also by the general public. Btw I love your contents! I have to prepare a photography exam and I have to do a fashion editorial, but I still don't know where I could find the clothes, do you have any tips?
