Getting into fashion through avant garde whores was probably my biggest mistake. One funny thing i remember was speaking to someone praising undercover due to jun taking punk culture and making it fashionable but essentially hating bape/stussy/supreme for doing the same exact thing with street/urban culture. They fail to appreciate fashion outside of the same 5-8 designers that they worship on meme pages and "archive" stores.

I feel like fashion constantly has this aura of inaccessibility. It definitely stems from the elitist nature and history of high fashion. The lack of info sharing even comes down to how a garment is made, or the background processes of a designer/label/house. I think there is also a common idea that in order to understand 'high' culture you must be able to afford it/wear it. Almost saying "how can you know rick when you can't own ramones.". Granted regular knowledge is like that. This vid is like a confidence booster to keep soaking up all the info we can and it still renders our learning valid.

I agree fashion is very daunting.. what I do is go through an article and any name, brand, or concept I don’t recognize, I type it into a running list I have and look it up later- and keep this little Encyclopedia for myself on my computer. One thing really leads to another.

I find fashion history to be fascinating and seeing how things repeat and modify over time. I HIGHLY recommend the podcast, "Dressed: The History of Fashion". The two hosts aren't just fashion enthusiasts but work in fashion. April Callahan works at FIT and Cassidy Zachary is a fashion historian and author. I've also found that reading a general book about popular designers so understand why people to things and how and go down the rabbit hole from there. I've also come to the conclusion that there are some things I don't "get" and aren't my jam, like streetwear and a lot of Japanese design, but I can appreciate it and understand the influence. Loic Prigent is new to me but is brilliant! His access to designer is amazing to get inside their head and atelier. I also recommend documentaries to see how an idea becomes a concept becomes a design becomes a piece of amazing construction to be bought.

one funny thing I remember when first entering the knowledge side of fashion, was that I labelled brands as being cars, with each to their own model,logo, design, and price range, to differentiate from eachother and somehow it still sticks with me today. interesting thing is that i can barely mention any car brands, but sure as hell can mention many fashion brands, and talk about them

You were my rabbit-hole into fashion, haha! It all started when my friend wore a Vetements shirt that piqued my interest, so I searched the brand on KZfaq and got to your video about it. And then I just binged watch everything that seems interesting. Then youtube recommended The Casual which introduced me to Japanese streetwear and then there's also Frugal Aesthetic with his entertaining meme videos lol Regarding gatekeeping and elitism, there's also this anti-hypebeast kinda group of people which I find equally annoying. Hypebeasts wear hype clothing to feel better about themselves, so these guys in turn shame hype culture to feel better about themselves. Like anything by a popular designer or brand is "overpriced crap" or something to them. It's virtually impossible to have any form of mutually respecting discussion online because it seems that people love to be on either extreme end.

You are speaking the truth on gatekeeping. I've worked in fashion for years and I'm sick of it! Fashion should be fun and I am not here for any elitism in it, people just want to be seen in the latest brand and have no concept of the history of the clothes, what inspired it...hell they couldnt even tell you why they like it.

I wouldn't even say those people are part of the industry, most people who gatekeep stuff like Rick, Margiela, etc. most likely don't have any interest to work in fashion and would rather circlejerk around in fit boards and insult people who "don't know anything" if anything they're completely disassociated from reality

Learning about some history of fashion and knowing more about my favorite brands actually helped me quite a bit in my first and second year in uni. So the lesson is, reading helps. Lol

yes yes yes! i was in that super strange limbo for a long time after i started modelling, i just felt so inferior because it seemed like everyone knew SO much more than me but also put their opinions of collections on pedestals which led me to believe they were facts. when i'm not wearing whacky garms my personal style is just 99% all black (sometimes high-end) grungy goth (essentially rick LOL) so a lot of the time i really wasn't a fan of any of the collections they always raved about and i thought it was just because i 'wasn't properly informed'. then i realised recently it's not that deep, start by learning about what YOU like and as you said it'll send you down a rabbit hole! ANYWAY you, bliss and luke are my fave fashion channels keep it tf up! 🖤

I personally begin with big names, then writing down all the names I hear/see on shows/videos etc. Then when I love a designer I get deeper on them, then their inspirations (go back in history)...

Thanks for this video. It rly made me feel comfortable and welcome. I have been quite into fashion and I’ve been focusing on all aspects (including art and design) and it gets kinda overwhelming, with soo much content, that when you come across “gatekeepers”, it almost feels like you know nothing. But fashion means so much to me (I wanna be a creative director/designer myself one day) and what I think is, don’t give up on something if you love it, remember why you came in the first place.

totally agree with the rabbit hole approach. kanye and pharrell were my introduction to fashion. another way, which you touched on in a previous video, is to follow the publicly traded companies that own a lot of these luxury brands. LVMH, Kering, Farfetch, etc.. release financial reports and press releases to their investors which hold a lot of information about the brands each company owns.

came across your channel through another video suggestion and it looks like it will be my entrance to the rabbit hole of fashion. What comes out a lot from your video is the idea of being curios and keeping an open mind. whenever i find a name i don't know i ask myself who is it,what is the style and as you say one thing leads to the next... the base to this should be a true interest (sorry hypebeasts i don't find you all that interested)

Actually right before you said you would not be qualified to be a university professor.... That's exactly what I was thinking you should do. Because your teaching is really Good. That is a talent. And some people could know more but be terrible teachers and students would have a terrible time. Teachers do so much and they facilitate that creative growth and flow. I think you totally could do it. :) Even like starting out giving one course idk.

The whole gatekeeping thing makes no sense, if you truly like the designer you wear wouldn’t you be trying to introduce new people who might buy something meaning the designer gets more money to spend on his brand

Thats how you learn new stuff and yeah you made a great point about insecurity surrounding the gatekeepers. Some people are just knucklehead... thats life. But hey, People shouldnt be scared to ask. I've always loved watching all your videos but I've never really gotten round to taking a deep dive into learning about high fashion, because I've always found it quite daunting. I remember feeling the same way when I first started getting into sneakers and streetwear, but information about those areas was so much more accessible on KZfaq. However, I think this information is slowly getting more accessible on KZfaq as well, thanks to channels like yours, Bliss, Sugarwoman and Loic Prigent, so I'm really grateful for that. 🙏🙏 Just a question regarding elitism and gatekeeping in fashion, was it always like this? Seems like it something thats being talked about a lot nowadays. Could it be a reaction to an increased interest in high fashion because of things such as the recent archive wave? Kind of similar to how "hipsters" used to be a thing a number of years ago, and would get triggered whenever an indie artist they listened to got popular. Would love to hear your thoughts on this, I'm thinking of making a video discussing this issue.
