Why Tesla Switched To Tabless Batteries

Earlier this year Tesla CEO Elon Musk filed a patent for a new type of battery which would revolutionise the electric automotive industry by combatting some of the biggest fears belonging to skeptics - range anxiety, charging times, and so on. A little later into the year, he took to the stage on what became known as Battery Day, a day filled with more promises than finished products, but nonetheless, an exciting step in the right direction for the company.
Some of the day’s highlights included the discussion of Tesla’s top of the range Plaid edition for the Model S, a powertrain which would take the $140,000 saloon beyond 200 mph. The elimination of cobalt, a precious metal which has previously been used rather heavily in battery production, was key to the company’s green credentials, while a production line specifically geared towards manufacturing cathodes, that’s the negatively charged part, would help streamline, simplify and cut costs for the automaker.
But that’s not why you clicked on this video - you clicked on this video because you were interested in the new tabless battery design which had a patent filed for it in early 2020. Something which musk highlights is “way more important than it sounds” in a Tweet dated May 7, 2020.

You missed the key advantage: heat dissipation. Currently tesla packs have liquid cooling channels winding among the batteries and heat is largely dissipated to the walls of the cell. They could not be made larger partly because the big cell would insulate the core too much. The tabless design allows heat to dissipate from the center of the cylindrical cell to the top and bottom caps (so larger diameter doesn't matter). The possibility of better, cheaper plate cooling is a big part of the longer life (not just reduced resistance) and is what unlocks the larger cells.

@Mario De Cristofaro I'd love to understand what you just said, but looking at the references you mention, I'm not so sure you understand it either... :-/ Electricity is probably the purest form of energy there is, at least that we know. Our biology uses a wide range of electric power, from micro volts (e.g., neurons) to full volts (e.g., the heart). Still, it's a lot to deal with. But two things we know: 1) for almost everything, it's the most efficient form of energy we use; and 2) the amount of energy the sun "wastes" every single day could provide for years of current human consumption. Plants have been using it for millions of years, that's why we take oil from the ground: plants store the sun's energy just like tiny batteries!
@Kappa1000
@Kappa1000 3 жыл бұрын
@Mario De Cristofaro Gurdjieff: "Consciously, we eat the electricity that is in the body and transform it. This establishes in us a force. In ordinary life you automatically lose this. But here it's not the same thing; it's not the same kind of fatigue. This other fatigue has a future. It's tiring but it brings you a substantial result. It refills your accumulators. If you continue, a certain substance will refill your accumulator. Today, the more you tire yourself, the more your organism will produce this substance." Mario, if I had the conviction (like you seem to have) that there's any truth in Gurdjieff's ideas, I would make them effort to study them and understand him. The amount of work needed, I'd rather spend the effort to learn about empirical science. If I'd need to learn a new language in order to comprehend something (like naming something from my subjective experience, eg. inner accumulators), I'd rather learn a new scientific discipline. Anyway, the "electricity" Gurdjieff talks about doesn't seem to be the electricity we talk about for moving cars around and use our household appliances...

PS, and one more correction on measurement units 39 kilowatt hours is not production, Tesla's individual cars have 55, 75, and 100 kilowatt hours, and production at the factory is measured in Giga watts and the next level is Tera watts. Hence the name gigafactory and musk considering naming the new ones Tera factories. But still good other than that. Anyone that isn't into Tesla wouldn't have noticed, and because they don't buy factories or do math on comparing to other companies, it wouldn't have effected them. No other car company is simultaneously building a network of electric production, storage and charging to power their product line, and no other car company has the vision that Elon has. Page 1:55 Tesla published 4680 format cell package use - point contacts - to conduct heat and current from electrode to cell wall (output terminal) instead of conventional welded tab. Welded tabs ensures good heat and electricity conduction to cell exterior. Problem? (1) Heat and electric conduction performance of point contact multi tab 4680 cell requires a substantial contact and retention forces, were not part of Tesla’s patent . (2) Point contact required compression and retention force are not to be derived from, or coupled through, electrodes or multi tabs because those are made of soft copper of no spring properly. If there were contact force packed into the cell such force will (1) be coupled into the electrode and will delaminate it. (2) follow that compression force will be degraded by - temperature shock, inertial shock and thermal cycling. Progressing into an open circuit and electric spark inside the cell, triggering off a rapid oxidation process or an explosion.

Non-removable batteries? I would say the opposite would be ideal: you can drive into a "gas station", (let somebody) take out your empty battery, put in a full one and you're good to go! Meanwhile the battery you leave behind has all the time to (slowly) charge, which is better for the battery. Win-win.

I have 40% of my portfolio in TSLA, 30% in AAPL, 20% in AMZN and 10% in NASDAQ.. From November I've been able to make $370,000 from an investment of $160,000... While I'm a huge fan of stock picking, I have made a few rather modest investments in individual companies like BRK-A...I use a financial advisor/broker who handles my portfolio...I'll never stop buying TSLA stocks...

All your numbers are wrong, they use gigawatts now, The pilot line for the new cells, is 10 GWh/year 1 Line. Panasonic's 11 lines in Nevada CATL?'s lines at shanghai, do a lot less but still. The new cells are not stiffer, all cylindrical cells are stiff, but they are glued into the chassis, instead of being packed into modules, then packs, then bolted on. Quicker, cleaner and cheaper. The cooling is a prime advantage, as electrons only need to travel to the top of the cell to escape, they generate little heat, and it is not concentrated. In a normal cell the electrons need to zoom around, and around and around, until they get to the tab, then squeeze through it, creating both a lot of heat from bumping things along the way, and concentrating a lot of this heat at the tab, right at the middle .... And I am sure the patent is a few years old, but it was finally granted. Panasonic is developing a line to make TESLA cells, but Tesla already producing them, and the Model Y coming out of Germany soon will be using the full cast chassis, integrated 4680 cells and all. As usual your research is for .$%&^*. Give up, or read up

just want to clear one thing: batteries have never been permanently put into any sort of device or machine, if it is 'permanently' put into a device or machine they are put in such a way that only the manufacture could remove them which is still not really permanent

What about the weight added? An electric car is still very heavy compared to a gasoline powered car. That weight is going to consume some of that 16% of the energy increase...

I don't think so, Tesla already decreased charging time for some older models, which seems to hint at planned obsolesce - it is more profitable to make the buyer replace their car with a new one rather than make the old car last for longer

I can't really believe that. If a tabless battery has so many advantages, it must have significant disadvantages. There are thousands of engineers who have been working on battery development for decades. If the tabless was supposed to have advantages, the engineers and battery manufacturers would have figured it out long ago and produced it that way. So, something is not right, something is being concealed.

And tabless is not exactly new: a similar design principle has been used for metalized polypropylene capacitors: have the electrodes stick out from opposite ends of the roll and metalize the ends to bridge layers together for sub-mOhm ESR. Multi-layer chip capacitors have been built in a similar manner since their inception too.

Have you heard of Realfiction holding and their new technology that will revolutionize the way we watch television? in addition to being able to display holographic images, a major upside is that the technology requires 80% less electricity than ordinary displays resulting in huge savings of approximately USD 7.4bN, 1.34% of the electricity production equivalent of 56 TWh of electricity and 25 million tons of CO2 only in the United States.
