What Does Tesla Do With Old Batteries?

Cars as we know them have been around since the early 1900s, but for over a century we have been burning fossil fuels at an alarming, almost careless, rate. Only in the past decade have we seen the electric vehicle market really taking off.
However, all EVs draw power from large battery packs placed deep beneath the car, hundreds of times the size of your latest smartphone’s battery. Have you ever wondered what happens to them once the car reaches retirement age?
A ban on petrol and diesel cars is fast approaching for many of us, meaning electric cars are becoming a much more common sight on our roads.
What happens to tesla batteries once they go bad?

There is a company with a environmentally friendly process to recycle Lithium Ion batteries. The process recovers close to all of the valuable cathode material ready to go right back in a battery manufacturers front door. The large battery manufacture's are well aware of this company. Tesla has likely know of the company for several years but as it is with all large companies decisions are made at a snails pace. I'm thinking Tesla is and will continue to be slow to properly recycle its batteries. Tesla has never been a company about the environment, as usual it's all about the money. I believe the company's process will soon come to the market place but as to which company will pull the trigger first, that is the billion dollar question.

i don't think you know this. But the guy just owns the company, and he memorizes a script to make himself sound smart. I am sure he is decent at coding but he is definitely not the one behind most of teslas and his other companies' ideas. Search up JB Straubel patents, that guy and most likely some other people probably came up with most of the teslas slightly more innovative designs(judging by his patents). Elon musk is more of a mascot, his awkward personality appeals to most losers and makes people who don't pity him, great marketing tactic. But you shouldn't put the person on a pedestal, cause in reality he isn't all that smart, probably the dumbest person working in all of his companies.

Car companies are not involved in the recycling of the vehicles they manufacture. Never have been. The EPA can require that manufacturers make products out of materials that are recyclable, and Tesla is doing that. Battery recycling is already happening, although Tesla's batteries are lasting a lot longer than anyone predicted. There are many Teslas on the road today with more than 250K miles on them and still using the original battery.

It’s early days really. Early Tesla roadsters should have a 4680 pack designed and made for them. That would be a good way to swap out their early batteries and provide material to recycle. Same with packs on S and X. 4680 replacement for their original units. Once they have been swapped out then all earlier cells would be recycled into 4680 and all cars would run standard cells. 2170 packs should all go to home storage units until the earlier ones are finished then they can create a process to recycle 2170 units until they were used up. By standardising on cell type as soon as possible, the recycling process can be made very efficient.

Well done! It is worth noting that one of the pioneers in lithium-ion battery recycling is J.B. Straubel, the former Chief Technical Officer at Tesla and Elon Musk's original business partner. Straubel founded Redwood Materials, a Nevada-based company specializing in the recycling of lithium-ion batteries. All of the elements found in these batteries can be reused in the manufacture of new batteries, and the cost of recovering those elements is substantially lower than mining new elements from the ground. This savings provides a financial incentive for EV manufacturers to use recycled materials in the manufacture of new batteries.

Yes, unless these batteries are recycled, there is nothing renewable about them. It's no different form fossil fuel, its another none renewable materials. When we run out we run out. Plus, the battery dumps are highly toxic to the environment. Same thing with those electricity generating "flowers" aka wind turbines, each blade is 10+ tones of fiberglass and epoxy. Which after 10-20 years go into landfills. Sadly, so far all these products are only great for making money, not the environment.

Everyone is so concerned about EV batteries going to landfill. As it is now it is so difficult to get used EV batteries that you pay over half the price of a new battery for a second hand one. They are being repurposed for energy storage to the point that recycling plants can't get enough to operate unless they refuse to give you back the old battery.

I don't see, AT ALL, how using electric cars is reducing pollution. I mean, if you aren't burning the fuel on the car, you are probably burning it at thermal plants to feed the power grid. Renewables can't support the power grid even of small countries, so coal and petroleum derivatives are still used quite a lot. While yes, you can certainly use renewable energy with electric cars, which you can't with petroleum based cars, I don't think that it's sustainable if everyone started to use electric cars.

Because a car has finite space for a battery, so energy density is important. Not so much for other applications.

I would want to buy from a manufacturer that recycles as much as possible - because whats the point of an electric car if it ends up being as bad as a petrol car after when end of life is included.

Tesla car battery last a long time and it is expensive. It is not like cell phone battery people throw it away. It can be reused long after the car is out of service. 💪

Exactly. I don’t understand how these countries will stay true to their word about zero emissions by X date. They will literally have to ban the purchase of fossil fuel cars years in advance. Also, if they prevent the use of these fossil fuel cars after this date, they will be reducing the freedoms of their people. They will also reduce the gas-station industry as well since most people won’t need to charge their car there unless traveling. Something else not mentioned in this video is all of the environmental damage from mining battery materials. Even if the carbon somehow cancels out, you can’t ignore the problems from the mining

I heard the battery core contains gold in the wiring . So it has core fee for anyone who recycles it. Lol

Of course everyone agrees with what you tell .... but you forget that, in fact, everyone forgets .... how is the car's batteries filled ... so how is electricity generated ...? Every form of energy that enters (gasoline, sun or any other energy) pollutes nature to the same extent as your electric car spends ....

I would be much more inclined to buy a car from a company that recycles batteries. pay some on top maybe even up to 5% if necessary. Around 1% would be better of course.

Silly title. Why would the vendor have to take care of the crap of the buyer? Other car manufacturers also dont cleanup for their customers. Anyway, Tesla has no recycle initiative yet, because almost all of their cars are stil running. And there are commercial recycle companies starting up when enough cars reach the EOL.
