If you don't own a 50mm lens, you're missing out on one of the best bang-for-buck lenses available. Here, I show you just how versatile it is - shooting a car, some landscapes (including a few panoramas), some portraits, and a touch of semi-macro.

The 50mm is a great lens, especially when first learning photography. I still have a nifty fifty that is mostly a shelf ornament. I should dust it off and have a walk about.

As much as I love 50mm, I ended up ditching my 50mm prime a couple of years ago; I found that it never came out of my bag. I either reach for my 70-180mm F2.8, or my 24mm F1.4. Especially when traveling, whenever I had the 50mm on I always wished I'd taken the 24mm. All that said I love the way you use your 50!

Indeed I was! My dad visited over the weekend, so I didn’t want to take time away from hanging out together. I almost bought Sigma’s 85, but ended up with the beastly 105 f/1.4. It’s super heavy, but wow!

Hi Peter, definitely guilty of not giving my RF 50 enough time in the sun. I give their newish 24 a lot more airtime, maybe it just suites the kind of work I'm doing at the moment 😀

Good stuff, Peter! It still amazes me that Canon haven't come out with an RF 50mm f/1.4 yet, seems like a no-brainer to slot in between the Plastic Fantastic f/1.8 and the super-expensive f/1.2. I have the f/1.8 and love it (though I don't use it enough!) and recently picked up TTArtisan's fully-manual 50mm f/0.95. That's a neat little lens--wide open it's not sharp at all, but definitely has a lot of character, and it sharpens up pretty well by f/1.4. It's marketed as a crop-sensor lens, but it does fill the frame on a FF sensor (though not sharp around the edges). Worth the price if you don't mind a manual aperture and focus (both made much easier in the mirrorless world, of course). They also have a 35mm f/0.95, but that one IS crop-sensor only, image circle doesn't cover FF.

That’s a good point re Canon - a quality 1.4 would be nice. I considered the TTArtisan after seeing a few other reviews, but figured I’d hardly use it since I already don’t use my Canon 50 nearly enough. Thanks for dropping by. 👍

@@0ecka I recently bought the Hasselblad X2D, and they have a 55mm lens, which is a 43mm full-frame equivalent. Trouble is, it takes months to get one, and it costs $AUD6,000.

@@peterfritzphoto That's a proper piece of gear alright. Their new V-lens line is just beautiful in every way. Expensive, but it's a work of art, with a leaf shutter in each lens (must count for something). Plus, 55mm focal length gives the exact natural angle for the system, just like the 43mm on full-frame, which helps finding the right composition and the right distance rather intuitively. I'm still using the good old EF40/2.8 pancake since it first showed up in 2012, now on R5. And I love it for stitching panos, 120mp, 200mp .. easily. Works every time. It's like magic.

But you have to keep your sensor size in mind, dont you? If you slap a 50mm lens on an APS-C cropped sensor, it roughly equals a 75mm lens on a full frame sensor. To achieve the 50mm look you are talking about, you would need roughly a 35mm lens on an APS-C, as this is the full frame equivalent of a 50mm. I think this topic gets overlooked quite often, leading to beginners (often owning an APS-C camera) using a 50mm lens, even if what they are looking for is the look that a 35mm lens would give them.
