every 'system' is just a way to learn where the notes are on the neck. I think of the neck as one large pattern that we as humans, break into smaller bits to more easily digest. It is silly to think that one method or system is better or worse. It's all just the same notes... I feel people just need something to complain about. Great video.

THANK YOU!!! THANKYOU!!! SOOOOO MUCH for explaining this in the sense that, there are different ways to approach the "CAGED" System, but what is the typical approach! You see so many videos on youtube, about the caged system, but many don't explain the 'WHY'. YOU DID! Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!! and thank you so much for your time on these courses, it is very appreciated :)

Those detractors do not understand the CAGED system. CAGED was what actually opened my mind up to what I saw as limited Boxes, and allowed me to see the value in the them rather than just go back to playing by ear. CAGED even makes it easier to use your ear w/out getting too overly dependent on patterns. What limits your playing is that same asshole who plays in C and instructs you to go to the 5th fret using position 3 to play in A minor, "Oh, thank you. It's all so clear now!" (am I the only guitarist who prefers playing in Majors, geez). I won't take lessons from anyone who dismisses the CAGED system. It truly is the best way to teach on multiple levels.

I switched from the "CAGED method" (I say method because it isn't systematic) to the 3NPS System, after YEARS of playing the CAGED way. My response used to be like yours, simply because i didn't know there was actually a complete system to 3NPS that involved all the chords, arpeggios pentatonics and everything else. The vast majority don't have a clue that there's a complete 3NPS system. They think it's just "seven patterns, one for each mode," and that's the extent of it.... Guitarists have hardly any understanding of the system today because the "CAGED Method" has drowned it out in this internet age. Only a handful of KZfaqrs know bits and pieces of a system that's been lost today. The true "3NPS system" is a complete Fretboard System. It involves all the "sweep arpeggio inversions" (which is also ALL the triad chords) and Pentatonic scales. Plus there's only truly one fretboard diatonic "Master Pattern" to learn. Yes, that's right.... Just one! (And it covers ALL the modes) Another vastly unknown thing about the 3NPS System is: When learning the intervals for the Modes, you only need to learn one new interval at a time (per mode) and it's ALWAYS the case of just "lowering one note towards the head-stock" for each mode. (when done in the right order) This only works with the 3NPS System! (The CAGED Method cant even make up it's mind which string each interval should be played on) Trust me, the 3NPS System is the easiest, quickest to learn, most logical & systematic method out there. 3 note arpeggios/triads have three positions. 4 note chords/arpeggios have 4 positions. 5 note scales have five positions. 7 note scales have seven positions. One position for each note! That's the true order of music when applied to the fretboard and they all work together as "one complete system."

One thing you're not makng clear is that all of the chords (except Diminshed, as far as I know) can be found within each pattern, even w/ the Pentatonic despite some missing notes. It teaches you how to target notes w/in a scale shape, based on the chord being played over, but doesn't limit you to them. It simply grounds you with a point of reference for a "home base" w/in a pattern. Q: How do you embarrass a shredder? A: Ask him to play what he just played at 60 bpm!

Shreeding is not music. Is sports. Music is harmony and melody. Thanks, Desi.

Well, shredding can include good melody and harmony. Listen to Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" as an example. But I understand what you're saying, people often turn shredding into a sport and that's not appealing to most musicians.

Rejecting the CAGED system is like a pianist rejecting the 12 note set of black and white keys. "The 12 note group will hurt your keyboard playing! You should visualize the keyboard with 15 key groupings!"

they play the same notes.. that are in this 'system'. it's just a way to map out the fretboard.

Good question. First off, as I explain in the video, it’s important to understand that CAGED is not really a “system" that someone created. CAGED refers to the natural way chords are formed on the fretboard in standard tuning. Does Beck, Page, Clapton, Harrison, Hendrix or any other popular player use the chord forms of C, A, G, E, and D? Absolutely! They also use some of the scale patterns that fit with the chord forms, mostly pentatonic patterns but some major scale on occasion. They may not think of these patterns as being part of the "CAGED system" because that's a term that became popular later, but they play in the CAGED forms nonetheless. These same players never used 3-note-per-string scale patterns much (or at all) but that shouldn't be a reason for guitarists not to learn them. I think it's good for players to explore their options and then decide for themselves what's most useful.

Unless you want to only play rhythm guitar with 3 note chords for the rest of your life, the CAGED system is a waste of time. It's useless for jazz, blues or chord-melody. And there are lots of better ways to learn the fretboard. CAGED is a waste of time.
