It didn't flop. People need to do their research. GM had a contract with HOLDEN to sale 2000-3000 units a year. That is it. They were actually deliberately trying not to sell them, as they were in the process of shutting down Holden in Australia.

I think Holden would have happily sold more of them to Chevrolet at the time, but after being badly burned by Pontiac with the G8, they wanted to see the money and an ironclad contract. That also fit in nicely with the Australian government wanting some guarantees about production after putting tax payer money in. It is also why the SS and Commodore SS look so similar, as there was no way Holden was making expensive bespoke body kits etc, again after the G8 fiasco. This car had to be done as a bonus to mainstream Commodore production. Bottom line is if Chevrolet had said they wanted 20000 a year, they would have got them and if they said they wanted them until 2019, you can pretty much bet the VF end of production would have been delayed. There was a ton of NIMBY (not in my back yard) going on with Commodore too, as it was a dam fine car, made on a fraction of the budget of US cars, so lets not let that thing get too well known or successful in the US, as it makes everyone at GM look bad if questions were asked how Holden can do it, but GM North America cant. Ford Australia had the same problem with Falcon, as despite intense interest from focus groups in the US to Falcon when it was show to them, Ford US would not have a bar of it and the unions over there also got upset about a Falcon competitor. They even tried to replace Falcon here with Taurus in Australia, which was a complete train wreck of an idea as Taurus was outclassed by Falcon in every regard and that was in comparison to a soon to be obsolete model Falcon in its last months of production. The first and only shipment of Taurus sold here took literally years for Ford dealers to move. You could still buy a new car, three years after the boat had arrived. Australia could have been the engine house for large rear wheel sedans and mid size sedans for the world, but both companies internal politics killed it.

Its my dream car. Was gonna buy one in early 2022 but the prices doubled from when i looked at them the august before. Literally 80,000 mile car selling for 48,000 and that's before the "Dealer Fee" and taxes. Models with less than 50,000 miles were priced at over $60,000. NOPE. Id love to have one but ill never go bankrupt for one. Car dealers ruined it for me.

If they kept those around and gave it the zr1s 6.2 it would definitely be a fun car against the chargers

If it had atleast 1 ad in the nation it had a chance, but they literally threw it under the rug. Also id say that the charger was the only competition because nobody is comparing a chevy to a bmw / mercedes lol

A very beautiful car. The only reason I don't still have mine is because when I wanted to add forced induction it made more sense to just buy a CTS-V.

The biggest problem with the Chevrolet SS was lack of advertising! Other than nascar and car magazines, I personally don't remember a commercial. Second issue was styling. The car looked too bland, not sporty enough and average person on the street thought it was Malibu with dual exhaust. The Pontiac G8 was a far better looking and advertised car. I do remember the commercial for the G8, highlighting the paddle steering wheel shifters! I think the worse part of this is, GM dropped the ball on a thriving market. As we can see from the sales of the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Charger, their is a market for performance oriented, V8 powered, rear wheel drive, full size American cars.

lol! id didn't need a commercial. 6th gen camaro never had a commercial in the US and they sold. The Chevy ss sold every unit. it was only a handful of them imported to the US and they all sold. It was an enthusiast focused car and they hit their target. Holden was always planning to shut their doors. Chevy just brought a few cars to the US in order to speed up the process.

The SS names was stupid. When some says Chevy SS i thought it was a Trim from another vehicle. SS was always a trim package. I had no idea they were talking about a WHOLE ASS CAR. I had no idea this car was evem released.

But the VF which was the Chevy SS , was defo an upgrade … it was around 50-100kg lighter massively improved interior, revised suspension setup , and better engine choices . It’s just unfortunate GM didn’t give any of you guys the wagon , ute versions we got as well

They failed because every other Chevy car of its namesake was a piece of crap, and nobody wanted a piece of crap even though it is a pretty good car being a Holden

Man I found one for 30k with only 20k miles on it but of course it got bought out from underneath me the next day. But with low mileage, these things do go for 50-60k (at least that I’ve found) which is just insane
