Another fun fact that wasn’t mentioned is that wild chickens are EXTREMELY skittish. Like, sneak up on it and it might get scared and literally have a heart attack-type skittish. So imagine the reaction when the first dude ever got a hold of a chicken without it flatlining on sight and brought it back to a village. Must’ve been like carrying a egg-laying bomb.

Fun fact: The real story of chicken domestication is really much more puzzling. Starting with... we're not even sure where it happened first. Was it South India, West India, the mountains between India and China, North China, South China or SE Asia? Red Jungle Fowl is natively found throughout all of these regions (and further) and the most popular theory at the moment is that it was domesticated multiple times throughout its wild range. And then... were chickens domesticated because they can lay eggs on demand or because cock fighting was so ubiquitously popular before modern laws have banned it? There is surprisingly little evidence of humans eating chicken eggs until a few thousand years after the first evidence of domestication.

The likely answer is much, much simpler. Chickens were likely domesticated only once, either in India or southern china. This depends on which region settled into village life first, the evidence being very inconclusive. The now domestic chicken then likely premepted any further domestications since the region was all very well connected by trade routes. As for why, it's pretty clear it was for the protein. Chickens turn protein poor rice into protein rich eggs. SEA crops were generally very poor protein wise, (and also only had the pig for meat) this is why you get cultural traditions of eating more exotic meats. Cock fighting would be a very, very distant thought, and much more immediate was access to a reliable protein source. Of course, some weird tribe might've domesticated the chicken for fighting, but on the whole the most likely reason was as a protein source.
