The NHL offseason is beginning to heat up and the Dallas Stars made their first move by trading Ty Dellandrea yesterday. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, we look at how his departure could impact Chris Tanev, Matt Duchene, and other moves the Stars make this offseason. NHL Analyst Darren Dreger was on TSN radio the other day and made a comment that Tanev and Dallas both would like for him to return which is great news. We look into what his projected contract could look like and how Dallas must make it work along with Thomas Harley who is an RFA and other players that must be paid in the future. Joey explains why it makes sense for the Stars to resign both Matt Duchene and Tanev this offseason. Plus, rumors about the Stars being interested in free agent William Carrier and how the forward group could be shaped for next season. Duchene should be resigned because he elevated the play of Tyler Seguin and Wyatt Johnson. Chris Tanev fills in the holes on what would otherwise be a very vulnerable defense. I feel like they do need to make an acquisition on the offense and defense to get over the hump of the Western Conference Final. We need a stronger forcheck, play more of a physical brand of hockey one of the reasons we lost against Edmonton.

Gonna be honest, I really liked Duchene and love that he found a home here, but I think a re-sign would age poorly. His play (including production) dropped off towards the end of the season until it was nonexistent in the playoffs beyond the miracle heartbreaker goal (can never take that away from him). It was kind of clear in the Oilers series that it wasn’t just defense lacking, but offense as well. Duchene constantly skated into traffic and couldn’t figure out how to make offensive plays without the space he gets in the regular season. I love his style, but he needs to adapt in the playoffs if he wants to go all the way with this team. I also unfortunately think that line’s production was unsustainable (as we eventually saw) as the underlying shift-to-shift microstats didn’t look great, and eventually they weren’t clicking (especially in the playoffs) and that’s because they couldn’t win the details in their shifts, largely because of Duchene. Great player, genuinely rooted for him all year, but needs to add some dimensions to his game late in his career to be effective when it matters most (outside of one series clinching awesome goal).

Joey what is going on? About four or five shows ago you wanted to let Matt go and now you want him to stay. You have to remember he found out Nashville didn't want him anymore that can really mess with your head and he said it really hurt him. He had surgery on his finger then moved to Dallas. He said all that kind of snowballed on him. I think he will be more adjusted next year! I wanted Matt here next year. I heard his interview he said everything that happened last year really affected him mentally, when I heard that it all made sense. It is like a divorce we all need time to adjust. I know they're professionals but they are human too.

I was making the case for why Dallas would want to resign him. To be honest, if he comes back great, if not, I think the Stars will be fine either way is where im trying to get at. I believe there isn't a better fit than Duchene on the market currently. That's why I think Dallas will resign him. However, I dont want to give them an impression I will be upset with his return. He's still a productive player and was a huge part of the success last season!

@Shadowwolf7774 I appreciate your kind words! Im trying to keep it as fresh as possible this time of year. I started playing when I was three and played till I was 18 consistently. Golf is my new thing now lol, but I still skate every once in a while

@@LockedOnStars Very cool. I wish you good luck with the golf hopefully Joe can give you some pointers... Lol. I'm 60 years old and never played hockey but grew up in Oklahoma City. My Grandparents took me every Friday night to see the Oklahoma City blazers back in the 1960s CHL division. That was the farm team for the Boston bruins. So I have always been a Bruins fan. The back in the 60's I grew up watching Ross Lansbury which ended up being one of the bruisers for the Philadelphia Flyers and watched Glen Sather as a 20-year-old. I still have a puck from 1969. And I just wanted to say, I love the revisit of the 25 year anniversary for the Stanley cup Stars but you forgot one player that actually scored the most goals in the playoffs and that was Joe Nieuwendyk. I loved Mike modano and Brett Hull. I have a Brett Hull signed jersey from ticket stock in 2000, autographed Mike Modano photo and a signed mini helmet from Ed Belfour. But if it wasn't for the play of Joe in key moments we would have never made it to the Stanley cup finals. And yes I went to Stanley cup playoffs in Reunion arena in 99. That experience was unbelievable! American airlines center actually pales in comparison with the noise that Reunion arena created. One more crazy tidbit, never once have I ever recorded an NHL game but in 1999 I decided to record on VHS every single playoff game from the beginning to the Stanley cup final win. What are the chances of that happenstance?? Keep on doing a great job Joey!

I do not. I think Kane would like to come Dallas more than Dallas wants him. I think he's still a good player and would work in most places including here. With an already pretty crowded top 9, I dont see the fit with the current Stars roster even with the possibility of Duchene leaving

If it ever made sense, it would be now. He just came off a season where he looked good in Detroit, it seems like him and the GM both agree he doesn’t want to come back, and the Stars just lost Pavelski. The issue in my opinion would be the contract, which I hope is indeed a problem that prevents it from happening because I frankly don’t want him here.
