Why The Deep Is The Most Complex Character In The Boys

Күн бұрын

When talking about The Boys as a whole, you think of Homelander. The iconic confused laugh. The mental breakdown. The watching a movie, angrily. Now granted, all of those scenes skyrocketed to popularity by meme culture. But if you take those scenes from context, or without the meme, beneath it is a phenomenal display of great acting. Scenes like these really show how complex Homelander is as a character.
And although not as captivating and terrifying as Anthony Starr’s performance is, I think Chace Crawford deserves more respect for his portrayal of The Deep. But we’re not talking about acting in this video, but more so about the writing itself. Even more specifically, the characterisation of The Deep. The absolute peak of what comedic relief characters should be. Cause really, hidden behind that hilarious personality, is a dark, profound, and complex person. Here’s why:

I would personally disagree with labeling him a psychopath - psychopaths, among other things like not feeling guilt, shame, remorse, also struggle from understimulation from situations that would be emotional for neurotypical people, causing them to not ex[erience/rarely experience anxiety and fear, and The Deep feels that a lot esp in the older seasons. Not sure about sociopathy too but I can`t argue for or against here. What I do think though, is that he has simply grown desensitized to death and murder. He has been hearing the voices of aquatic animals since he was 9 I believe - so picture that: since very early childhood, he lived in a world where one sentient species kills other sentient beings. Beings he can talk to, be friends with, beings that accept hom more then people ever did. And he watched people kill and eat his aquatic friends as if it`s nothing. From his perspective, it`s the same as a human killing another human being (it is made very ckear how he sees sealife as equal to people, considering he is attracted to them but not in a fetishist way, but rather the same way he`s attracted to human women). With a past like that - I am surprised he isn`t even MORE cold, like despite seeing this violence since childhood, he still tries to save the animals sometimes, and he was still worried when Homelander suggested he killed the senator. After that murder though - that`s when he in my opinion becomes completely broken. The next time he`s ordered to kill people, he doesn`t even hesitate, and from then on he only becomes more violent. I wonder still if he actually enjoys violence like he told Noir-2, or if he`s trying to convince himself he does to kinda be able to process that he is now killing people. Because when Ambrosia was dying, his discomfort was very apparrent - he still did it, but he took no joy from it. And right after he told HL "I would kill every fish in the ocean if you tell me to" - which contrasts his previous discomfort. This makes me think that he is trying to suppress the humanity that is left in him by sorta raising the degree of violence. Kind of like: hesitating on his first kill -> enthusiastically participating in further killings; feeling pain from killing Ambrosia -> "whatever, might as well kill every fish in the ocean". Idk, just a thought. I am curious as to what`s going on in his brain. I do agree with him being a horrible person tho, just pointing out he`s far from a psychopath level of callousness Also I love how you pointed out how he parallels A-Train but takes a different direction - I`ve been talking abt this for years and now with S4 it`s pretty much confirmed
@IntellectualYapper
@IntellectualYapper Ай бұрын
That was spot on. Wished I could’ve added all this incredible analysis in my video. I think this was another reason why The Deep is complex, like you said, he’s trying to suppressed his humanity to be able to blend with all of the chaos with Homelander and being in The Sevens. I guess I should’ve looked more DEEPer into The Deep’s past, and how he became what is. But because of that scene in the finale where he merciless killed the writer, I don’t think The Deep is redeemable anymore. He even became this killing coach for new Black Noir.

the deep was never this evil in my opinion, its just that for whatever reason the boys season 4 are now portraying the deep as a monster. Bro in real life the deep is an outcast and his best friends are the sea creatures and now the show is trying to convince me that all of a sudden because sister sage called him a superior being he is ok with killing the only creatures who he actually resonates with? The deep was done the most service in season 2 i think because at least the character had heart and felt like an actual human being
@ketchumuu
@ketchumuu Ай бұрын
I don't think you are understanding the point of deeps portrayal in the show, we are clearly just seeing a small portion of his entire life. He very likely has a lot of trauma and is extremely insecure, I can guess that since he was a child he did not have appropriate idols he could look upto and I suppose there are still awful things homelander could have done to him before the show even began, making him cling to his very own abusers even abusive ideas themselves because he really hasn't experienced much of anything else in his life. So his already dumb and somewhat narcissistic brain lashes out and pushes against this tidal wave of humiliation he is put through. Essentially his sense of self is slowly getting ripped away from him and he's too much of a shy bitch boy to do anything about it, not even understanding the extent of trauma he can cause to other people because it's so normalised in his general surroundings. Its this desperation I feel like that makes him unique not the normative persona of the outcast turned conflicted comedic relief. Yes it is interesting but what seems like a far more interesting is the idea of his selfs narcissism acting as a kind of catalyst towards a "self-replacer" psychological tendency to protect himself.

I do wonder if Homelander has any inkling of attachment to the Deep being the only remaining original member at this point and has shown himself to be fiercely loyal and at times also favored by the big boss. While there was the “Blow A-Train” moment, it seemed like Homelander wanted the Deep to stand up for himself. That said if he really needs to, I don’t doubt he’ll kill the Deep, I don’t think he has anything near a relationship with him as he did with the original Black Noir.

The Deep always tried to redeem himself, but these efforts always met with failure. Now he's just basically grasping at anything that might get him some level of success. His character can never be redeemed, because as a society we are less willing to forgive what Deep did to Starlight compared to what A-Train did to Robin. Unlike Hughie, we never got a chance to see Deep when he was young and idealistic. Both became desensitized to violence by being manipulated by toxic role models but we only get to empathize with Hughie. He doesn't get a chance to talk about how he got to where he is, unlike Maeve. He doesn't get to explain his POV because that would make him less effective as a punchline for jokes and gags. Deep and Ashley are both abused by those above them and lash out at those below them. Both are not taken seriously. It'll be curious to see if Ashley gets a redemption arc in S5. I'm curious to see Deep and Neo-Noir's role going forward. Will they continue to be treated as jokes?

‘The octopus’ was his girlfriend. The only one that actually cared about the deep, the one deep supposedly loved most. The deep didn’t know starlight when he sa’d her, didn’t know or care about the people he killed, but he knew and cared for his girlfriend which makes her his most monsterous kill. Marine animals and humans are all people to him, maybe he even cares about marine life more, so this isn’t any different to a human killing his human girlfriend.

Next time, could you go deeper into details? (No pun intended) I know your name is yapper but I notice very little substance in your story. This video feels more like you watched a few episodes of last season and just recorded your reaction after. For people who have also seen the show your telling them nothing new. Maybe you should rewatch the show couple of times and start noticing things that other people don’t, I think that would make it a little more interesting. Also skip (or shorten) the introduction. I already clicked on this video because I knew what it was about so you don’t have to introduce me to the subject. This comment is meant as honest feedback and not as hate. I honestly want to see you improve, so keep going at it. Kisses 😚 ❤❤

Thank you for the feedback! I couldn’t really go into more detail cause it would’ve gotten very laggy editing but I will remember to keep my intros shorter and go more straight to the point.

I call this The "The Deep" Effect. Chase Crawford is GORGEOUS, hes arguably the most conventionally attractive cast member. But his actions are so hideous that hes gross and completely unattractive! But i cannot think of a SINGLE female character that has the same effect happen to them, eg so outrageously hot yet does actions so hideous and disgusting that she becomes completely unattractive no matter what. Would love to be wrong on this if anyone has examples
