Once the elephants in our herd become sexually mature, they need to be put onto contraception, as a matter of South African legislation that makes it illegal for semi captive elephants like ours, who rely on human care and support, to breed.
Before these rules and regulations were put into effect by the Department of Environmental Affairs in South Africa, the elephants in our herd were able to breed, which led to Tokwe, Bubi, Setombe and Lundi all falling pregnant and having offspring of their own.
We catch up here with Adine and Dr Peter Rogers, our wildlife vet and advisor, to share insight into contraception in elephants, the why’s, how’s, what’s and more!
The older bulls and cows in our rescued herd therefore do not procreate, the females do not lactate or bare offspring, the males do not go into musth. This prevents the aggressiveness and other challenges that come into play when a bull goes into musth, helping to protect the herd and their human carers.
We hope this answers some of the questions you might have had about this!

Wonderfully explained. While I personally wish for the populations being restored to their previous glory, it cannot be done safely right now. I concentrate on “we managed to save this one.” I think it is miraculous that Adine and the H.E.R.D. family have mastered the enormous task of providing sanctuary and some degree of normalcy to these elephants we’ve grown to love. I try to remember the significance of saving one life.

Yes. I understand this completely. With as many orphaned elephants as we see appearing all over southern Africa, it really wouldn't make sense to keep producing more elephants. I watch another elephant orphanage youtube channel that has a lot more orphaned baby elephants than THE HERD. There is a surprising amount of orphaned baby elephants. So, at least someone is caring for them throughout their lives. Thank you, Adine, for making that perfectly clear.

Kevin Richardson explained to us last year about his lions being on the contraception implant. It sounded like the Depoprovera that the clinic gave to our housekeeper. His older lionesses were given a hysterectomy in case they got ovarian cancer which recently one of his older ladies had died of but the younger ones got the implant. He explained that they were not breeding lions or hyenas and eventually when all his animals are gone they are planning on the future of the Sanctuary.

Thank you very much Adine and Dr. Rogers for this explanation of why the HERD is on contraception. The HERD is a sanctuary for orphaned elephants and those that have come into conflict with man. You have given them such a beautiful and serene life. You have rescued them from certain death and saved their lives. They are happy and content and are thriving as a family. In the future there well may be more Khanyisa's' and those who fall prey to poachers and hunters. Look at what the drought did in Kenya. Over 200 elephants died from lack of water. I give my 100 percent support for how you operate as an Elephant Orphanage in South Africa and for the wonderful life you have given the HERD. We appreciate all of you more than you know!

What a huge responsibility for the elephant carers and reviewers. The side effects could cause a serious catastrophe if not monitored properly. The thought that the semi captive herd is still relied on to adopt as in educating the young calves means we all need to work together, but the end to the preference towards older calf adoption etc can be chancy. Having a calmly reared herd to accept the orphan calves helps the traditional ways to continue. I have been concerned with reports that elephants non wild reared can lead to skill absences in these creatures. It must be very frustrating. Thank you for caring and loving the elephant toward a hopeful destiny.

I know that it can be dangerous for everyone for the males to come into muskt because of agression (you also have several males in Jabulani ) I wasn't aware of the females becoming aggressive . I watched a video about the aftermath of a large bull in muskt and the result was very sad for an unaware younger male that got in the path of the larger bull. I also talked to my doctor about a video of an elephant at a tourist place (he took it) because of over grazing . I think HERD is doing everything possible to keep their herd happy and healthy and free of things that could be harmful to them . I thank you for that

Taking care of an elephant herd is not a small undertaking. A lot of safety concerns, adherence to regulations, and financial hurdles to manage. It comes at a cost to the health and future of the elephants in the program. There is a correlation to the environment which is like no other, because of actions of the human population living their lives, enjoying their privilege and freedoms, and need for control over all that intersects or hinders. My enjoyment and education of this herd of elephants is a benefit of all the effort of the caregivers, staff, administration, and medical professionals. I hope there is a future for elephants to live free and enjoy a full life, including offspring, that is God given and not man governed. My soul feels that day will never be, as long as humans continue to destroy their own lives, and the environment of all living creatures. The HERD program is full of compassion and appreciation for elephants as semi-captive, semi-free living beings in this world that disregards their natural existence. Contraceptives are a temporary solution to to the long-term human problem.

The crowded part comes from humans, they're the ones who should be on contraceptives and learn that they are usually the ones interfering with other creature's territories and lifestyles. With elephant numbers dwindling so rapidly, it seems rather wrong headed to be putting them on contraceptives. Hopefully with more conservation efforts and education of people how to get along with elephants and eradicating poaching, some day these elephants can return to their former glory and numbers.

@@happycamper5846 I agree that humans are the cause of overcrowding. Many feel it is a right to have a child or multiple children. Whether or not they can adequately raise them properly, or live where there it is already overcrowded. I chose not to have children and had some people have told me it is an obligation to have children because it is going against God to not do so. I'm an idealist, so the world I wish to raise a child in doesn't exist. Too many people are invested in having a say in the reproductive choices of humans. But when it comes to animals, it is "choice for me, but not for thee." Elephants are very much invested in their families. They don't have jobs, careers, education, or hobbies to keep them busy. Having food, water, health, safety, and family are the things that are most important - with family as their nucleus. The elephants of this herd are bothered by other herds in their area when out foraging so I think it is miraculous that HERD has created a herd that is cohesive. They are not all related by blood. But their desire to live and innate gentleness binds them young and older. This is so beautiful and wonderful to see, from the vantage point of me on the outside looking in. A part of me feels guilt/shame that I enjoy this pastime of watching these elephants exist a human dependent life. Humans have caused their demise, and now they need humans to live in what is now a human world where they are provided their essentials. They have nothing but are happy. It would be nice for them to always feel complete and fulfilled as they deserve. As God intended.

Knowing that there are people who breed animals (for ex. lions) just to sell them to be held as pets for tourists or later to be shot to tourists gives me the creeps. I cannot reply any better than Diane Aytac on this video. This is why I love seeing the carers who are the real elephant experts. Elephants live a very long time and I like that some sanctuaries take rescue babies who have lost their mother including trucking and flying the babies to a nursery.. One of the aspects of the HERD that was informative to me is the role of recycling, renewal of the earth, the elephants diets. I remember one of the elephants going on a "jols" at night and the relief of the HERD staff that no harm came to the big, bad boy who evidently brought a wild pal home with him. Wild animals get a bad deal in the news. Rather than inform and educate, terms like 'attack' rather than in many cases the more appropriate word 'strike' is what triggers an animals and creatures responding to a stimulus, often perceived as a threat. Love to hear more about elephants and how human behavior can affect them. A Centers for Disease Control (CDC), United States, report found that cows killed about twenty people a year on average. That makes cows about 20 times as lethal as sharks. These deaths aren't due to marauding packs of feral bovines terrorizing suburban neighborhoods, but rather incidents involving working with cattle on farms. As the CDC report notes, "large livestock are powerful, quick, protective of their territory and offspring, and especially unpredictable during breeding and birthing periods." Most people killed by cows are farm workers. Cows officially the deadliest large animals in Britain. An agricultural committee is to keep the public and farm workers safe from cows after they were revealed to be the most dangerous large animals in Britain. Cows remain deadly, responsible for an average of 22 human deaths in the U.S. each year. About 77 children, largely infants and toddlers die choking on hot dogs each year in the United States. Risk factor is said to be you are more like to die in an automobile accident on the way to the beach and eating a hot dog than from a shark. I have read that consuming plants and trees stimulates new growth and along with the dung beetles burying the dug for their young no no nutrient goes unused being put back environment. As an aside, I have read studies where deer were placed on a island with more than sufficient food resources and no predators. Over time the herd expanded, the resources dwindled, and starvation followed.

WOW!! I knew that the HERD elephants were given contraceptions and I know that two female Cows had given birth to elephant calfs but I didn’t realize it was a total of four females that had calfs. So, I think TS a good thing since they are in semi captivity and not completely out in the wild to get pregnant but the old ones do procreate and add to the elephants population. It’s also good to hear from Adine that the elephants from her Herd probably will never be released which I feel is good. They are safe and being very well taken care of and they love their Carers too and their human mom Adine.❤️🥰🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘 I understand also about the number or orphans that might come into your care but, is it possible to have a larger building to house maybe three baby Calf’s on the premises of the Orphanage? Unfortunately, many people and governments see wildlife as competition for natural resources. If you can make more money exploiting the land to raise cattle, pave roads, cut down trees for wood, build housing, mine minerals, and plant profit crop, why preserve it for wildlife. Habitat loss and the extinction of wildlife go hand in hand. It's happening faster in the last 50 years than ever before in history and is occurring all around the world.

Ty this video was very informative . I have been wondering with regards the contraception especially for bulls as they can be very stressed full of testosterone making them very unpredictable. Which is of a natural occurrence & behaviour. The herd is so calm & both males & females interact so well. I, myself have felt it is the love , dedication & patience of the carers. Bravo & ty

So glad that you wrote down some information since it’s so hard to hear the video due to the wind. I wondered how the bulls were able to stay in the herd. Thanks so much for the information.

Wow I didn't realise that it could be complicated it's a shame that the younger females can't at least have the one to be able to be a mother and experience everything that comes with that but I do understand why it's done a very interesting video thank you all for sharing 🇬🇧 xxxxxx

Fascinating! I was wondering what you did to stop them from reproducing. And may I say that I wholeheartedly understand why elephants in captivity or semi captivity should not be allowed to reproduce. Save those very precious spots for elephants in need and because of those sods who poach and maim them, I have no doubt that there will always be elephants in need.

Seems to me the main problem is: elephant is endangered in many parts of Africa, but yet there is no interest to take new elephants. Hard to release them. How about Kenya? They have plenty of orphans there, who get released. But also, they have a big problem with poaching, and none of us want Jabulani herd sent to be where they would be poached.

The Jabulani herd as far as I know will be released in their own vast reserve when the time comes, roaming free like the wild elephants there. The Kapama reserve belongs to the Roode family: Lente (mother) & Adine & they employ poaching guards who also utilize drones to keep all the animals in the reserve safe. HESC (lead by Lente Roode) takes care of seriously endangered species.

I thought about before. Now it makes sense. As much as We would like to see more babies in the JABULANI HERD it's very important to understand that it has it's own problems. This incredible video has giving a lot of us the chance to know what the risks that will create if the animals are allowed to breed freely like other wild herds do. Thanks Adine and Dr Rogers for this incredible video.

In this situation, there is some kind of sad dissonance: to save some, but in the same time not to let others be born. It turns out that semi free content is still semi life. It is a pity that Khanyisa will never become a mother.

Khanyisa may still become a mother one day, and many of the other females may fall pregnant again in the future but just not while in our care. Should we be able to reintegrate some of the elephants into the wild in time they will be able to give birth

I love Herd. I love and respect all that is Herd. I rarely look up to anyone , but I do look up to Adine for I know there are times her dedication to Herds elephants has exhausted her,, and it has taken a devotion in time and effort few would do for a animal/animals. It is a sacrifice when one chooses to rescue and maintain a Herd of elephants, no matter how much you love them, and there is no doubt Adine loves and respects her Herd. . I realize her hands are tied so to speak with the decision of the S.A. government. But I'm in agreement with another post that said in so many words, it's counter productive to put elephants on contraceptives. We humans have taken so much of their natural habitat, killed them in the thousands of not millions, allowed each hunter their yearly quota of wildlife lives including slaughtering elephants, poached them almost to extinction , and we have the selfishness and gall to manipulate and control their normal breeding cycles??? All humans in our billions and billions should be on contraceptives Not wildlife, We Are The Problem, not the elephants of Herd or any elephant still alive.. Before we outnumbered everything on this earth, humans couldn't control animal populations. Mother Nature on its own controlled naturally the populations of all wildlife species, mother nature never has needed human interference when it comes to wildlife.. We are the problem with our overpopulation and our blind consistent selfishness, not our beloved Herd or any wild elephants left in the bush. Sebakwe, Lund, Bubi, Fishan (before some human captured and used him and he had a infection and was castrated) , Jabulani, Timisa and Pisa, Mambo and Zindoga and all of our Herd have every right to have offspring, and it's so sad to me they won't be allowed what we humans do and that is have babies. I'm sometimes ashamed to be part of the human species and this is one of those times.

Thank you for being responsible about this. A lot of facilities cynically produce calves for the cuteness fundraising/tourism factor which is gross. People who care about elephants only support ethical orphan-rearing and reintegration ops. Please everyone think about this when you're donating.

It makes sense to me that you would need to do this, especially to avoid the bulls going into musth. But also to control the size of the herd and to keep room for new orphans. And, obviously, you are the experts, you know what you're doing. Plus, it's the law ...

In the wild, don't the males eventually go out on there own, mate and not live with their original Herd, correct? The Orphan Male Elephants can't just leave and expect to be wild, all of a sudden.

A question I’ve always wondered about. It would be so wonderful if the young orphaned babies could suckle from a real mother and not have to be given supplemental milk, etc. Is there no way I guess to find a mother that would have a milk because they have to be in contraceptives? Thank you for all the wonderful time I spend on your channel and what you’re doing.
