Why The Manchester United Takeover Isn’t What It Seems

The Manchester United takeover saga looks like it might finally reach a conclusion this week, with INEOS owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's 25% bid awaiting approval from the club's board. But with the Glazers retaining their majority stake, how exactly would the new structure work, and is this a good thing for Manchester United?

This will go on for years. Until he has full control, he's not going to pile money in while the Glazers invest nothing. They needed a clean slate with a 100% new owner. It wouldn't surprise me if they refused to give up more in the future.

There's nothing keeping Ratcliffe from dividing and conquering the Glazers. Buy out the least interested family members first as well as minority owners and the public stocks and then whoever is left from the Glazer contingent will become the minority. They can stay with limited power or sell up at that point.

Also don’t forget that he didn’t get 100% of the the club because he didn’t have the money in the first place anyway. Also there’s the unpaid debt of over a billion. Don’t see things getting better in the long term, it’ll be more or less the same

The easy analogy is buying a house, you rarely buy it for 100%. You put a deposit down with the agreement in place that you own the place so can renovate it as you please. With the ultimate goal is you pay it down until you reach 100%. SJR will have control, pay off the Glazers in time and ultimately take full private ownership. In the mean time, he can renovate as he pleases. (That is the hope, a lot of details to be shed in time, no way SJR pays 1.5bn to be a patsy)

You are over exaggerating a bit mate. Man UTD is one of the biggest club in the world. It generates enough money to be self sufficient (atleast in a sporting sense). We just need additional money for development of training grounds/facilities and old Trafford.

@sathviktantry1073 Surely your notion of self sufficiency relies on not being burdened by interest payments from debt. We have wasted £1.5b on loans which would have placed us in a position to compete with City and PSG, especially if we had that money from when they took over. You are not considering all factors.

@@cameronjones8641 the debt is a big problem but if we reduce our wage bill I think we can gradually pay off our debt. Last season United raised 640 million pounds in revenue out of which approx 200 mil was used up just to pay the wages of the men's senior team. Also almost all big clubs except Bayern do have a huge debt.

This would have been viewed as a great step forward for the club (football control out of the hands of the Glazers and total restructuring of key positions with a lifelong United fan at the helm) before we had the hope of a complete sale and practically unlimited money in the form of the Quatari Billions. It's a bad decision in the long run because split management never tends to work out. Furthermore, both parties are reluctant to invest their own money into a club that requires significant external investment after years of mismanagement. Ultimately, United may improve but they won't ever be able to sustainably compete at an elite level with this management structure.
@rufdymond

To be honest, when you’re talking about these kind of sums, no one invests their own money - that will even be the case with Man City, it will be done via a business entity, which makes the money technically not yours, it belongs to the business. This is exactly what Sheikh Jassim would have done with the “92 Foundation” had he won the bid. The difference for clubs like City, Newcastle, PSG that have mega wealthy owners is that the owners never need to take any money out of that business - 100% can be reinvested for the betterment of the club….plus no money needs to be paid to share owners.

I don't think so, the Glazers are renowned pontificators, they're rarely in Manchester, getting them to make decisions takes ages and they don't know much about the football stuff anyhow. What we've needed for so long is getting the football side of things sorted, getting a proper structure and plan in place, instead of throwing huge amounts of money at the problem and desperately hoping something sticks. If SJR/Ineos have full autonomy on this stuff then we'll hopefully see things improve.

We can also look at Ratcliffe's "work" in other sports. In 2019 Ineos bought the Sky cycling team. Since then the team wins less and less and shows less ambition. This year they lost one of their leaders - Tao Geoghegan Hart, to Lidl, a rival team, and there is no replacement.

The Glazers impose a lack of direction onto ManU which means that the footballers somehow have to work things out amongst themselves (and this in constant fear of contradiction from above). This left Rangnick out of his depth, and has put Ten Hag into a position of constant second guessing (which strangely, he seems partly to enjoy). To the Glazers, ManU is a business with some kind of sports club attached. You couldn't have a worse kind of ownership. If Sir Jim's ideas are a bit dim, at least he shows interest. You can work on that.

As a lifelong United fan, I'm struggling to find any solace or logic in the latest developments What every United fan wants is an end to the slow but relentless decline that we have witnessed during the Glazer's stewardship of the Club. But, whoever takes control of the Football operation, will NOT succeed unless the burden of the crippling debt (fast approaching 1£Billion) is removed, because the club will not have the funds to invest in the Team or the stadium, training ground and general infrastructure. So far the only positive I can see is the suggestion that Paul Mitchell MAY come in as the Head of Recruitment/Sporting Director His expertise is desperately needed and would give ETH some of the tools that he needs to keep pace with clubs like Newcastle & Spurs. But I see nothing in the current proposals that gives me any hope of catching City, Arsenal or Liverpool

I’m hopeful that Ratcliffe will help us turn things around. He prides himself on not being the dumb money in the room, so isnt just going to hand the Glazers a pot of cash without getting something in return. I think he’ll complete his review and then over the next 2 years we’ll see a complete restructuring of Uniteds footballing operations. We’ll see proper football executives in charge (Blanc and probably Mitchell/Edwards) and they’ll slowly work their way through each department hiring the best people and implementing best practice. There will likely be a lot of turmoil and leaks during this time as people who’ve been performing poorly wont enjoy being called out on it. On the pitch we’ll see a younger, fitter squad which has been streamlined to the correct profiles and the wage bill will be brought under control. Off the pitch INEOS will invest in repairing the stadium and small upgrades to the facilities at carrington. The money they put in will initially be additional debt, but over time this will convert into equity so they own more of the club. Once the super league finances are established and the 3pm broadcast embargo is lifted around 2026 the Glazers will be ready to cash out more as they’ll see broadcast rights reaching a natural limit and think the value of the club is close to its peak. INEOS will become majority shareholders and the debt will be repaid with loans that will be financed and repaid by INEOS. A leaner, debt free and stable Manchester United will emerge. It might not be the Qatari Galacticos, but this will be better for Manchester United than the Glazers taking loans from American equity firms and continuing to run the club in to the ground on and off the pitch.

@stifftackle296 8 ай бұрын
@@michaelackwellcollins8740 You’re right that it might not be as soon as 3 years time. We’ll have to see the exact timelines. But they wont hold on forever. They wanted £6bn+ and couldnt find more than two serious bidders, so they know that cashing in isnt going to be easy even when the clubs value increases. They are only making £30m a year in dividends (split 6 ways) so cashing out for billions will definitely appeal to them sooner rather than later - especially over a sport they don’t even care about. A government regulator coming in could make it even harder to find buyers so I think when we see the details of the deal with SJR, we’ll see that their escape route is already well defined. Lets see.

If this goes through, United are finished. We'll probably go bust during the next 5 to 10 years because the Glazers will STILL be at the club during that time. As for the Rat 🐀 just look at his other two clubs. One has been relegated TWICE and the other is lucky to get a Champions League place at the end of the season, and the competition for Champions League qualification is night and day when compared to the Premier League. And, of course, Qatar will buy another club, possibly with a different front man. And that will leave Champions League qualification even MORE difficult than it is right now. The only hope we have is that the board veto this investment on Thursday, otherwise we're fucked. A 100% buyout is the ONLY acceptable thing for any United fan that's concerned with the long term future of the club. But, of course, plenty of fans are going to be distracted by the talk of Mitchell, and we'll spend some money in January and the Summer and people will be distracted from it and talks of protests will die down. Again. We're basically fucked if this thing goes through.

The nice stuff from 2019-2022 is a really unfair stick to beat him with. He completely overhauled the club, and any change that drastic you need time to see the new regime for what it is. Perhaps the 2023/24 season is the start of that. It’s worth noting that covid happened 6 months into his regime, effectively derailing his initial plans for the club. It was daft to judge Arteta for his first 3 years at arsenal, it was daft to judge FSG based on their first 3 years at Liverpool, and PERHAPS it’s abit hasty to judge Ineos based on the first 3 years at nice. And also, looking back 12 years or so, the league finishes over the last 3 years have been consistent with the clubs historic league position (pretty much anywhere between 17th-4th).

I have been saying the same thing for ages. If UTD play an entire season without a single fan at any of their matches, it will force the Glazers hand. Once that world wide embarrassment has kicked in and the share value tanks, we might see those parasitic paedos leave.

Any deal that keeps the Glazers in the club at any capacity is enemy action IMO There's no guarantee from Sir Jim will get the whole club, that's just PR spin to appease the fans. Qatar shown us their vision and plans for Man Utd which I believed upset the Glazers. How can them shareholders be happy when Qatar was offering way above market value for Utd. Look at what City owners did for the area surrounding the stadium. Qatar was offering that which meant more jobs and revenue to that area. No matter how Sir Jim dress this deal up. Unless he got a 100% guarantee that the Glazers will sell the whole club in 3 years. Then Sir Jim is an enemy to the club. I don't care if he's a local lad, I want the best for Utd. Sir Jim can't buy the club, he won't clear the debt and haven't got the money for the stadium and infrastructure. So which Utd fans can say this is the best deal for Utd cos I believe the majority wanted Qatar cos they offered a clean slate with no debt and an proper ambition to win
