I really disliked Quantum Mania so that doesn't help, but I like that murderous Cat so I'll likely watch it at some point. I'm also curious to hear Brie sing too. Do I think it will be good... er no, it will be dreadful, but it might be a good dreadful like Doctor Strange 2 Or the last 2 Spider-Man Movies rather than just a dreadful movie period like The Eternals. This might actually be on the better end of bad. I fully expect it to not cause me physical pain like every Thor Sequel has.

Oh and here is another thought, there isn't anything else out worth remembering for a long time, so Captain Marvel's sequel will be on Streaming many months before anything else is even released. So it isn't like you HAVE to watch this now. Deadpool 3 isn't that relevant to this either & a lot of people may skip that too due to the rating and it's association with Fox-Marvel and those who do want to see it will discount 'The Marvels' for the inverse reason. That is likely why they leaked the end credit scene so people will think the movie is important. But in short if you make a movie that is a sequel to 2 TV shows they may simply think "I'll watch that on TV too" or they might even have nopped they heck out after 'Secret Invasion' too. One likely can't discount Disney's bad PR either. As their animated Movies are doing not so great either. Incidentally the one that Elemental one did poorly at theatres but is doing really well on streaming suggesting people wanted to see it they just didn't want to risk paying for another dud after Lightyear etc.

Can we stop saying it's sexism? Like it's a big bad that ruins everything? Like if someone says it's M-SHE-U, they are more than likely signaling "Hey Im not familiar with these characters, no one else is, and they aren't that interesting. You switched tactics. From proper storytelling to full on social nonsense nobody asked for." More than likely. Blaming the big bad Sexism doesn't solve a thing. Just a throw away line now, because it's sooo COMMON with directors and writers who are paid to write this crap. Lambasting the fandom. Instead of just making a good movie.
@voyagerone6861

Entertainment is not a place to voice political/social change. These people have made a mockery of storytelling, inserting their own selfish views that upsets a great many. The fandom has their own views, and guess what as a creator you have to deal and cater to those. Rather you agree or not. You can't just shift audiences. And insult people on twitter who don't like it. Screaming "You're all sexist" is a lie. Because nobody, especially from what Ive seen is claiming that, but you.

For me, it's the fact that they've repeatedly failed to do ANY of their female characters justice, even when they already had something to work with. Most of the work fleshing out Black Widow was done while they were while killing her (Infinity/Endgame)... and then they did her dirty with a posthumous movie that was late AND lackluster. We would have gladly seen a Gamora movie, but they don't want to do that... because _reasons?_ Wandavision was a little too bizarre for me to really 'get', and they failed to sell me on her weird obsession with imaginary children (it just made her look nuts). Captain Marvel was a box office success but her character was widely panned for a lack of charisma, likeability, and onscreen presence. Monica was never given a personality, and the kid (while acclaimed for being likeable) isn't expected to offer the maturity that the franchise needs right now. I don't worry about "homework" with new characters -- if a character is worth investing in, I should be able to see that with good writing/performances. Lots of people watched the movie "Serenity" without having seen the "Firefly" show, and went back to watch the series because of the movie. We all saw Breaking Bad without a backstory for Saul Goodman; it was BBad that sold us on watching a spinoff called "Better Call Saul". The first Guardians of the Galaxy was released at a time when no one knew who they were -- it was the writing and performances that endeared us to an entire unknown team. With or without a television show, a movie meant for general audiences should be smart enough to sell us on a new team without us having to do "homework" to understand and enjoy the movie. So that's a non-issue for me. What I see is this: they tried pushing these three women independently and failed with each of them... and now... putting all three of them into one movie looks like an obvious, last-ditch effort to hedge their bets. They're literally just throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks. If they don't have any confidence in these characters, why should we?

Another possible reason: Declining quality of the new Hollywood regime: the Bad Robot Star Trek movies, Star Wars sequels, Disney+ shows (e.g Kenobo, The Book of Boba Fett, etc.), declining quality of Paramount+ shows (e.g. Star Trek Discovery). So the audience seems to have an intuition that this movie will be another predictable disappointment. And Disney is getting so desperate, they *might* bring back 58 yr-old Iron Man. It's going to be "Indiana Jones and The [something something] Skulls" all over again.

This is just the culmination of Disneys goal to ruin the Marvel brand which they set out to do years ago. Nobody asked for this movie, Brie Larson revealed just how unlikeable she was even before the first Captain Marvel premiered, and fans are boycotting this movie because lately the quality of Marvel movies is not even "Netflix quality". Alienate your true fan base, and you don't even have the good sense to realise that they departed the scene a long long time ago.

The man who coined the M She U you should really watch this content. He's Nerdrotic, and we don't have a problem with strong female characters but we have a problem of it being forced down on our throat and that most of these characters are flawless and can do no wrong. Characters like Thor , or ironman had flaws and limits to overcome and we all loved black widow cause of her ability to use her sex appeal and cause she could kick ass. Current characters are simply just standing on the shoulders of titans and aren't Able to stand on there own. These characters, The Marvels most people have never even heard of them cause they were never popular.

For me, it's just superhero genre film fatigue, mixed with at-home streaming. When we used to get very few superhero films at a time, they seemed like big and special events; but now that we've become so accustomed to seeing the same blockbuster visual effects all year long on the small screen, movies like this just don't seem so big anymore, unless there's a unique enough plot or new character that really warrants buying a ticket. And also, as you said, there is a feeling of thinking that I need to be caught up on other films / shows to fully understand the nuances of the plot and characters.

On the "M-She-U" thing, I do think it's more than coincidence. I heard an explanation someplace that made some sense to me that maybe the causality is inverted. It's not that these movies suck because they're full of women - the studios load them with women (and to some degree minorities) because they don't trust their own scripts and abilities. So it's an attempt at audience expansion (which makes sense) but it also supplies an inbuilt excuse. The movies didn't suck don't you see - it's the ebul bigots boycotting and reviewbombing blablabla....

Bro they hired feminists who lead with feminism as their personality to write and direct the movies, so it's not surprising. Lol there's people in Disney that say "nobody stopped me from putting my not so secret gay agenda into the movies" Lol they wear shirts for star wars that say "the future is female" and write the male heroes as secondary characters in their own movie or series, lol there's no arguing this point of the MSheU, it was done on purpose and some of it out of spite, some of it was for ESG or ideological reasons. For me I’m not particularly interested because: •They aren’t tied to source material. •It’s another multiple versions of the same character which is incredibly cliche and generally used instead of a story, like in the last 3 Spider-Men fan service epic. Personally I love female characters and was a fan of the original Carol Danvers Ms Marvel, Red Sonja, Tigra and many others and I love discovering new characters but I feel the MCU has gone off the rails in terms of quality. I think it’s up to James Gunn to save the genre over at DC. Marvel still has some aces in the recently acquired rights to some heavy hitters like Silver Surfer, Galactus, X-Men and hopefully Fantastic Four can break the bad movie curse but I’m not going to bet on it. I think the problem is the studios need comic history fans that know the characters from the Bronze Silver and Golden ages. James Gunn has some of that background so I have more hope for DC at this point if they don’t focus purely on recent weak iterations…

Hey, Alachia! While your three options all contribute to the disinterest in the film, there is one factor you overlooked which is impacting the fate of this film more than the rest: Brie Larson. "Captain Marvel" was Marvel's first major misstep and its impact has rippled across Phases 4 and 5. Detractors were accused of being misogynists but there was a laundry list of problems with that film. -- utter disregard of the source material save for two surface details: memory loss and Air Force background -- supercharging a B-level character into the MCU's invulnerable Superman analog -- shifting the spotlight from the original male Mar-Vell, one of Marvel's sacred cows who FAMOUSLY died and never returned like Uncle Ben -- gender-bending Mar-Vell because a capable male mentor is unacceptable to the narrative -- missed opportunity of glossing over the LANDMARK Kree-Skrull War in what could have been an epic space opera -- making the Skrulls, one of Marvel's staple villains, into GOOD GUYS; this later impacted "Secret Invasion" -- making ruthless, uber-paranoid, hard-nosed, foul-mouthed super-spy Nick Fury into a cat-cuddling, doo-wop-singing clown -- the secret of Fury's eye revealed to be a cat scratch rather than Skrull duplicity ("The last time I trusted someone, I got this." -- The Winter Soldier) -- the rendering of the Kree Supreme Intelligence as a silvery virtual space rather than a protoplasmic blob like a Spacing Guild navigator from "Dune" -- ret-conning the MCU to position Carol as more significant than the characters whose exploits audiences had spent a decade investing in -- criminally wasting both Jude Law and Annette Bening -- providing no character flaws to Carol Danvers unlike all the other MCU heroes because it is unacceptable to the narrative -- a toxically woke narrative that nerfs or vilifies all the male characters at the expense of a flawless, omnipotent female character who has been subjugated by the patriarchy -- Brie Larson's unsympathetic, colorless, affectless portrayal -- Brie Larson's antagonistic public remarks accusing the male fanbase of misogyny when they had wholeheartedly embraced Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Gamora and Wonder Woman The body-swapping might be "Freaky Friday"-tropey but it is probably the only AUTHENTIC comic adaptation in this new movie because sidekick Rick Jones used to swap places with Mar-Vell whenever their Nega-Band bracelets were tapped together. Rick Jones was the teen sidekick to Cap, Hulk and Mar-Vell. The comic cognoscenti recognize this even if the nooblers do not. As you said, with a different set of characters, not even the noobs would care. The goofiness of too-much inappropriate humor at the expense of character and drama has plagued Marvel since "Guardians of the Galaxy" and was cranked up to an '11' by Taika Waititi. The trailers promise more of the same. This is definitely a factor but with a different set of characters, nobody would care. Most everybody who saw the movies saw "WandaVision" as it was first out of the gate during lockdown so Rambeau is familiar but underdeveloped. She lacks a hook to generate much interest especially since her command of the electromagnetic spectrum was not well-defined. Most people skipped "Ms. Marvel" but were aware of it which is why they passed as it seemed directed at tweeners. Iman Vellani was miscast but generates enough good will that she would ordinarily be likable. However, since Kamala absolutely adores the MCU's most baggage-laden hero, it automatically makes her unlikable by association! Changing her power set and origin story also felt like more disregard of the source material. The show nailed the Muslim cultural comedy and fun family dynamics from the comics, though. Comic cognoscenti know who these people are but don't care enough due to how they've been portrayed. MCU devotees also know the score and would probably be less concerned about authenticity. Nooblers would probably be brought up to speed quickly by the movie but, yes, lack of familiarity is a contributing factor. There are Eric Cartman of "South Park" rabid M-She-U trolls out there but most men champion strong women when the characters are organic and truthful. Men as well as women were vocal about a Black Widow movie since her introduction in "Iron Man 2". That's the film that should have been shoehorned between "Infinity War" and "Endgame". Beloved strong female protagonists in sci-fi date back to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Dejah Thoris in "A Princess of Mars"! "Ahsoka" had three female leads and the Star Wars fanbase was stoked to see them until the show itself left many unfulfilled. This movie's failure will not be due to sexism. Conclusion: Goofiness -- not a significant factor Sexism -- a miniscule factor Deviation from the Source -- a minor factor for some, a contributing factor for others Unknown Characters -- a contributing factor "Captain Marvel" Domino Effect -- a significant factor Brie Larson -- a monumental factor! By the way, Wanda's turn to villainy was telegraphed by her show which was clearly leading to her "Darker Than Scarlet" comic arc. Comic readers fully expected Wanda to go bad because it's what she's known for! Even if one had no familiarity with her comic past, she was clearly being teed up as the MCU's answer to Jean Grey and her end-credit scene with the Darkhold was a huge clue. Don't worry. She's also known for her redemption arc which is certain to come.

So I went to see it last night with a friend (here in Germany it launched on Wednesday). The room wasn't empty, but there were many empty seats, which I thought was alarming for a Marvel movie. I wasn't expecting much, but I enjoyed Ms. Marvel a lot and also liked the character of Mônica, so I went with open heart. To me, the cast was really cool and I honestly would love to spend more time with the 3 protagonists (and Kamala's family!). But boy oh boy. I'm very sorry for everyone who was doing their best in the film, but the script was bad. The pace of the film was incredibly confusing, there was not enough time of exposition or development of the plot for us to care for what was happening. I saw every other material from Marvel until now, and I was so lost for the first half of the film, with things that were only concerning this one film and not other series or films. I really hope this doesn't undermine Iman Vellani's future because she is spectacular. And the saddest of all (for me), the film was so disappointing that I couldn't get hyped with the mid-credits scene. Sigh.

Princess Lea, Lara Croft, Wonder Woman, Jean Grey, Rogue, Storm, Mystique, Elektra, Camelot 3000, none of that were women portrayed as weak and despised. I'm freakin' Gen X, I myself was a nerd who made nerd cool, that "revolution" for me is my eggs n'coffee. Those psychos now make Mary Sues, make all male characters weak, stupid and morally feeble, directors pose for photos laying on the ground with actresses stepping on them as if that was needed, exterminate the heroes' journeys, character archs, charisma, friendship, mutual respect, storytelling, and pretend to be champions of DEI - as if the 20th century, and Warren Farrell, CH Sommers, my mamma, my GF's and women BFF, etc. didn't happen - it's all just too pathetic to be shoved down our throats, so I'm mad and I like to see them repeatedly bite the dust.👺

The fact that Brie Larsons Caprain Marvel got its own film first before ScarJos Black Widow is really telling. Black Widow deserved her own movie early in phase 1 or phase 2 not when the fact the character is already dead. I'd loved ScarJo Black Widow movie involve espionage, having her attempt to wipe her backstop before having joining the Avengers when the character in the series was still alive.

It's interesting you say that because Doctor strange 1 was also the first marvel movie I didn't bother to watch. To me Marvel started it's declined back when Ant-man 1 came out (for me it was the start of the formulaic directing/visuals many other marvel movies would adopt). I think the "teasing" thing is really spot on, cause thats what all these movies are: trailer/teasers.

Very good points. I think you also have fallout from previous shows and movies. For example, when Star Wars: The Last Jedi came out, many people who didn’t like that movie decided they wouldn’t go see the upcoming movie Solo, which underperformed. Certainly there were people who weren’t interested in a younger Han Solo story, but at least some Star Wars fans didn’t go because of how they felt about the previous film. Marvel has had some hits, but they have missed a lot recently with Ant-Man Quantummania, Secret Invasion, etc. fans are getting tired of spending their money on disappointing content. They’d rather wait and see how the initial reviews are, or they’ve lost interest all together.

Two thirds of the starring cast are deep cut marvel characters that very few casual marvel fans even know off. This is the problem, you can't have a blockbuster movie relying on characters that people aren't familiar with. This is marvels biggest problem. They ran through their A list characters and are now relying on fringe characters that don't resonate.

Some are eager to shout "it's because they're woke" but it's a combination of things : no clear direction for where the MCU should be headed, horrible stories and directors who seem to be unable to direct, over-saturation, overpowered characters with no back story, sometimes a forced political message that throws you out of that universe, and so on... Marvel is dead alas and it's a shame really (as they have so many awesome stories that could be told cinematically).

I'd say the issue is that the people who loved the Marvel movies have grown up since Iron man and are in college and working full time and seeing how little disposable income they have for movies. Also, these same people have been massively overloaded with Marvel and Star Wars content and it's all starting to taste like beans to them. Finally, they are tired of being told they HAVE to watch 4 shows to understand what is happening in a movie.

To have a hero moment you need a heroic arc. A heroic arc necessitates a fall from which the hero can claw themselves back. Marvel movies don't allow their heroine to fall. Look at Civil War. Widow has barely a scratch on her, not even her Hair tussled, meanwhile the men are bleeding, broken bones and what not. There is no Die Hard 4 moment where John grabbs the Mai Linh by the hair and slams her against the wall. But you need those moments for a heroic moment. The harder the fall, the steeper the hurdle.. the more heroic the comeback. If Mai Linh had been the hero in Die Hard, then after John slams her against the wall and throws her down the elevator shaft, you'd see him leave her for dead, and she then would claw her way, on bloody fingernails up the shaft, out and then kick John's arse and the Audience would have been hollering all the while. Mai Linh was badass for a Villain and if you do that with a hero and make them get up, when the audience is feeling like "i wouldn't get up" or even feels like "you've done enough. You did all you could, you got the shit kicked out of you... it didn't work, its okay. We understand". That is the moment your Hero has to get up. Has to struggle to stand, grit their teeth and get up again, despite knowing they will fail. That is how you get a heroic moment. Captain Marvel does not have this moment. She is awesome when we met her... it is all hubris for her... there is no fall... and she then learns that if she just believes a little harder in herself she is even more awesome. Tony Stark my contrast was a douche nozzle, just like Captain Denvers. And the movie starts with kicking the shit out of him for it. And then we spent the the 2nd third of the movie watching Tony mope around and trying to fix himself while he builds the suit. And the last third is him standing back up.. standing up to his old self represented by his Uncle. He does not win via brawn, but via brain too. The Suit of his uncle is better in every way... Tony outsmarts him. He doesn't overpower him, he outsmarts him. Why? Because you need to have tony get his shit kicked out of him, so the Audience roots for him when Tony makes the inevitable comeback. We go and see hero movies for the comeback. We go there to see Life beat the hero down. See them stand against the odds. The deck stacked against them. A situation any sane person would just give up.... and then they raise back up. You want the audience to be "stay down, you've done enough". and the hero to be "i will not yield, you'll have to kill me, but even tho i can barely physically get back up, my spirit remains unbroken and i will stop you". The Captain America "Muscle" moment isn't what made him heroic. Captain America is heroic because he earned it by being the underdog. Though i'd argue that even there Marvel already started to loose the plot. Captain America was never the underdog. She was an insufferable bint on a power trip and it never stopped. There was no fall. She never learned humility. She never was brought down.. she never had to get back up. She never got to be a hero. All she was.. was this insufferable character that believes themselves to be special.. and the movie goes "yeah, you are special and wonderful, just believe that you are special and wonderful" and then she is more special and more wonderful. At no point in that movie was Captain Marvel ever at a point to low that the audience was like "i wouldn't get back up". And that is what you need. Even if the audience felt they too would fight their generic terrorist captors and rescue themselves, everyone would be like "mate you been through hell, take time to heal". But Tony doesn't. He reached his low point and he is determined to change his life, despite the fact that it would be easier to go back to how things were. That is why he is heroic. Captain starts out a scrawny kid with to much spunk for his body. He gets lucky and gets a super body... and the rest of the movie he still struggles to be what he wants to be. You need the struggle. You need the low point... you need the audience to understand that they wouldn't get up. And that is when heroes raise. A hero does the right thing against all odds. You need to stack these odds against them. Show the audience that they go against the odds. Show them suffer. Physically, mentally...you need to bring them low. You need to make it clear it is easier to give up than to stand up. And then your hero raises. Marvel doesn't do that anymore. Especially not with their female characters. So why go see the Marvels? I don't care about any of the characters and the trailers don't make me want to go see this movie either.

There are a few problems that the marvels is dealing with. The first is that with the actors strike they aren’t able to promote the movie to put a certain narrative on what we might see. Since they have to be silent the internet is speculating and usually it’s not positive. 2. The general sentiment around marvel is that they are not as good as they used to be. Many shows and films have been entirely mediocre, and for these big budget block busters that just isn’t good enough. Miss marvel is great, wandavision is great Loki is great but a lot has stumbled. I like Hawkeye though even though many people didn’t. People do not have a good taste in their mouth after secret invasion especially. 3. Captain marvel hasn’t been particularly interesting. People know she’s strong but that’s all. The trailers haven’t been exciting . There has been no connection between us and carol. Most reviews say that iman Vellani is the best part of the film, and that’s because we as an audience have a connection with her already and those who don’t get to experience a little piece of miss marvel. As for captain marvel herself, I don’t think the name alone is enough to get people interested.

The MCU as a franchise succeeded on the consistency of likeable characters. It didn't matter if a movie with a stinker plot came out like Iron Man 2 or Thor 2, you could still enjoy the worst of the MCU films because the characters were consistent and enjoyable. And then seeing them interact with each other in Avengers was pure gold. Carol Danvers was the end of focusing on characters with interesting origins, personalities, or charm. Carol was a nothing character with no personality, and a vague origin story. And every other new character in phase 4/5 has been the same. Kamala Khan seems to have charm, but she is broken as a character, as she is written as if she were an MCU fan from OUR world, and not a fangirl who loves super-people in her world. There's no reason for people on Earth to be stalker fans of Carol Danvers who has never spent time in public on Earth. Kamala shouldn't know who Nick Fury is, and definitely shouldn't know what he looks like. Kamala is always written like this, even in the comics. It's as if she has read our comics, and watched our movies. Even the video game has Kamala quoting a line from a Captain America comic that should be an event that happened in her universe that she never witnessed, and that isn't common knowledge in her world. The MCU is DEAD.

So it's just another diversity push, another gender swap, like with Shuri becoming the new Black Panther and race swaps with red heads/ginger characters being turned into black characters: Nick Fury himself is a race swap of the white ginger Nick Fury, Mary Jane Watson got race swapped, Iris West from the Flash was race swapped, Jimmy Olsen was race swapped, Wally West/Flash got race swapped, Batwoman got race swapped in the CW TV show, Commissioner James Gordon from Batman got race swapped, Electro from Spider-Man got race swapped, even the Norse god Heimdall got race swapped, Valkyrie got race swapped etc. Also Ariel/The little mermaid got race swapped. For the love of God, create new original black characters, stop with the gender and race swaps!

Good video. I was unaware of your channel before but I subscribed now. I think you are right about your reasons for the movie's failure. I have a few more: -People are mad at Disney in general, particularly conservatives, or just those who view Disney as a sort of 'woke' symbol. All the KZfaq commenters have got onto this train too, really bashing Disney constantly, for better or worse, even when I personally like some of those shows (I agree about other). Anyways, conservatives politically have been mad at Disney since the whole war with Desantis (even though we have all turned against him too. We still stayed mad at Disney). And the 'woke' agenda is somewhat real. Though I personally don't feel that Disney is as bad as all the other networks. With the whole female, multi-ethnic cast though, this movie plays right into that stereotype, seemingly confirming the fears of Disney's opponents. -People are broke. The economy is not good, despite what they say on tv. And, even though some movies have done okay, that doesn't change that fact. I suspect that movie goers are much more selective now, and as you pointed out, no one was a huge fan of these characters. I hadn't even heard of a single one of them before this year, and had only seen Monica Rambo in Wandavision, and none of the others. - Cinemas are still experiencing a massive decline from when most cities outlawed smoking in public buildings, such as theaters. It may sound strange, considering that happened over 10 years ago. But people are slow. Personally, I have only watched a couple movies in theaters since then, and found it intolerable (as a smoker myself). I wont sit in a theater and be miserable the whole time, when I can just wait and watch it at home, with cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, whatever. I want to enjoy a movie. It's already a big time commitment to even watch at home. We at least want to enjoy it. And as a smoker, even if I tried to tough it out, it is a losing battle. Eventually, I'd just give up trying, and switch to home viewing. -T 0 r r 3 n t 5 (can't say that word here)- Personally this is how I watch everything. I don't even have my TV hooked to anything, not even an antenna. It's hooked to my PC. And, even if I was fine with paying for streaming, why should I? When streaming also sucks up my bandwidth, making anything else I do online at the same time, miserable and laggy. And I usually am browing online or playing games at the same time. Combine T-ing with already getting used to home viewing, and personally I expect cinema to die completely, cable too. Perhaps streaming will keep in the fight. Alot of people aren't very tech savvy, not enough for the T word. But, what happens when that changes, as people get more tech savvy? For now streaming is in the fight because they bundle it with everyone's phone plans. Anyways, just a few more possible reasons for you.

There are three reasons this lifelong writer and one-time-avid MCU fan is avoiding The Marvels: 1) The Loki series essentially ruined one of my favorite aspects of the MCU (the infinity stones) and compromised already lousy MCU character continuity to the point I decided to abandon the Marvel-verse unless something wondrous showed up. 2) Brie Larson's misandrist comments incline me to avoid her projects. 3) Disney's appalling treatment of Star Wars pushed me to boycott all but the most amazing of Disney's projects (I won't even go to Disneyland--once a cherished vacation destination--unless/until a true apology for their wrongs against Star Wars comes out.) The only way I'd buy a ticket to a Disney film, Alachia, is if you personally said it was outstanding and not to be missed. In case there's any question: I'm a progressive, pro-diversity female writer who has championed LGBTQ+ rights forever, so this is *not* me being a sexist jerk. I was rooting for Marvel to give its prominent female characters their own outstanding movies. They did Black Widow so wrong it chills me. I'm not abandoning hope that the MCU will turn itself around and start paying attention to characters and continuity, but I don't actually expect that miracle to happen. Still... I'll keep watching your reviews of these films in case it does.

I’m 20 and how I saw this movie was not a lot of people have Disney Plus and most people just know the main superheroes of the Avengers and not much else like Hulk or Iron Man or Thor. We see those faces and names on the movie poster well go see it. When I saw this poster when I went in to go and see Killers of the Flower Moon I couldn’t recognize anyone on the poster except Samuel L Jackson. That is the reaction I feel most young people and just normal adults had that “oh nick fury is a side character in this movie I don’t really know a whole lot about” And also the importance of knowing who these people are was not impressed onto the general public. If you did a public poll holding up pictures of the actresses in The Marvels, the only ppl who are knowing who they are are the people who watch the disney programming.

I think the number one reason is that most of the chatter around the MCU has been negative. Since most people are not online in these we are it’s easy assume that won’t matter but it does in this case cause the MCU model has been having f rabid fans hype up the next thing and then normies feeling hyped to go see it by all the chatter or at very least obligated to go see it because they don’t want to be left out. In a world where the hard core sound down on it, nirmies default back to I think we’re many of them always were which is “eh” - if this was a big character they really knew and cared about - like RDJ iron man or Soider-man they would feel more attached but Captain Marvel’s billion dollar gross was majorly tied to the most hype, fomo, obligation era of the MCU between Infinity War and End Game. To your point about spoilers or confusion, I think people felt then like that had to see Captain Marvel to understand Endgame so they did.

Now I'm a progressive guy, all about woman's rights, plus I vote blue. But this movie made it's main star (Captain Marvel) to take a back seat to two other female sidekicks? I felt they could have used this opportunity to actually fill out Captain Marvel's character more. The biggest complaint about her character was that she seemed *bland* which is kinda true. So why not use an entire movie to just give her more of a personality. Lastly, in the comics she's much more interesting, she sleeps around, kinda selfish at times, and acts like a real military brat sometimes. I know, those seem like negative traits but that's what makes her interesting. She's supposed to be a hotshot former pilot who got cool powers. But they've made her totally perfect without any issues. Oh well, I'll end up most likely enjoying the movie. I just think they've really overdone it with this one.

I haven’t seen any of the TV shows at all because they’re huge time sinks like you could sit there for months trying to catch up. But also almost every MCU film in this phase has gotten terrible reviews and so I’m just not interested anymore. Thinking of Eternals etc. Those broke the chain. I’m not sure how Guardians of the Galaxy 3 fared but I watched that one recently and was deeply unhappy. Then it leads into the “yes I have no idea what’s going on in this phase and don’t really care”. Having multiple Spider-Man spinoffs running doesn’t help either. Maybe I'm odd, but I did enjoy Captain Marvel. However, I don't feel compelled to see this iteration largely because of the reason you mentioned about homework. As similar reason kept me from watching the 1st and 2nd Guardians of the Galaxy movies -- I never read the comics, knew absolutely nothing about the heroes. It wasn't until I got a glimpse of them in Infinity Wars/End Game that I devoted the time to do the homework. Watched GoG 1 and 2, and now they're some of my favorites of the MCU. But also the switching powers is also gimmicky...too gimmicky. The reason I enjoyed Captain Marvel was watching what she could do with her extraordinary powers, and then what she decided not to use them for. But in this movie, I don't even seem to be offered that enjoyment. I also liked Black Widow, though it could have been better for sure. It's certainly not as bad as two of the Thor movies. I feel like I need to supply screen cred by listing movies with female leads that I absolutely enjoyed. The Alien franchise, Annihilation, Contact, The Hunger Games, Gravity, Arrival, Everything Everywhere All At Once...I'm sure I'm missing many more. If Marvel dismisses criticism on a false premise of sexism, then it will ironically hurt female led projects in the future as the company will devote subpar writers, directors, film crews, post-production, and marketing to those films.

For me (and I think a lot of people are in this boat), I dont give a damn about these characters. The issue now I think is that the movies and content being produced never gives the viewer a reason to care about the characters being introduced. Before the MCU I didnt know any marvel hero except spiderman. In fact I only knew Superman, Spiderman, and Batman in all of comics. But the MCU presented its heroes in a manner that showed their strongpoints and personality so well that you truly felt connected and invested in them. Captain America quickly became my favorite hero, but I love all the original avengers. The new movies feel like they tell you who to like and care about without giving you a reason other than them being related to a pre established hero, or because they imply a super cool storyline from the comics... Like why should I care about Echo, Kate Bishop, Cassie, or Chavez... cause they are plucky? Or Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, Valkyrie, and Rambeau... because the marketing teams have told me to and assured me that they are cool? Like what makes them super heroes anyway? Why do they do what they do? Anyone could tell you Spidermans motivation, Batmans motivation, Captain America motivation, Tony motivation, Black Widow, etc.. but this new wave of characters marvel has shoveled out dont have even that level of depth. What is the morality that puts them on the path they walk. Captain America is a strong guy with a shield dressed in America propoganda, Kinda corny... What makes him cool is his character and why he fights. IMO Superheroes are cool because of the sacrifice and what they are willing to do to make a difference at their own expense. Often times when that expense is more than just physical pain, it means more.

Women or not, blackies or not, durkas or not, the reason why people are sick of marvel and disney as a whole is the p^ss poor writing. It’s so painfully obvious that the writers, producers, and even the actors are absolute and utterly miserable people that are so heavily involved in their own political morality war and so hell bent on “diversity” whether be it hell or high water that they throw billions of dollars at it hoping that it will work. Well guess what, p^ss poor writing, p^ss poor attitudes of “I’m better than you”, and just the over all disingenuous nature of everyone in any of disney’s studios is only pushing people away. Either this ends with disney/marvel going bankrupted or going on their knees and asking for forgiveness and finally creating content that the audience actually resonates with on something beyond a superficial level. P.s. before anyone gets bent, I’m half durka and blackie (mostly durka)✌🏽

So I saw Captain Marvel in theaters. She had Harry Potter syndrome in the worst way; she felt like a side character in her own movie. The other three ARE side characters. And combine that with the writing challenges plaguing Marvel properties of late. I’ll just as soon stay home and get ready for Shang Chi 2.

Personally, I think it’s a combination of factors that lead to this movies potential upcoming flop. 1: Marvel studios has pumped out way too much content for a casual movie goer to keep up with. Like you mentioned Homework. 2: Bree Larson’s Captain Marvel is just a poorly written character. 3: This Multiverse Sage just isn’t working. Dr Strange 2 MoM could have groundbreaking, but it was rushed out & the Scarlet Witch arc should have been a whole Sage in & of itself! 4: Bad word of mouth. 5: As I diehard fan, at this point I’m starting to check out.
