Are you a good person if you have good intentions? Many seem to think so, but there are a lot of problems with this belief. In fact, it’s the source of much of the evil in the world. Dennis Prager explains.

Have you heard the expression, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”?
Well, it’s true-and it helps explain why there is so much evil in the world.
Take the 20th century, the bloodiest century on record, in which about a hundred million people-all noncombatants-were murdered by despotic regimes, nearly all of them communist. Many of the people who supported communism-both outside and inside communist countries-thought they were doing good. They were sure they had good intentions. Many of them were nice people-doting parents, considerate neighbors, courteous to strangers.
The Soviet Communist Party killed 20 to 40 million people; the Cambodian communist government massacred about a quarter of the Cambodian population; the Chinese communist regime killed more than 60 million of its own people-the roads to all these hells were paved by many people who had (or believed they had) good intentions.
Were it not for well-intentioned people who believed in communism, the truly evil people who implemented these genocides might not have come to power. To cite but one example, it was American and British men and women, many with good intentions, who delivered to the Soviet mass murderer, Josef Stalin, the secrets to making an atom bomb. They, too, were probably nice people.
Of course, there is no large-scale genocidal movement today in America. But the road to lesser hells in this country is also paved by many nice people who believe they have good intentions.
Many of the teachers who bring up topics that rob young children of their sexual innocence are motivated by good intentions. Most of the Americans who vote for politicians who seek to defund the police-a guaranteed recipe for increased murder, rape, and other violent acts-think they have good intentions. So, too, those who seek the elimination of “hate speech” have good intentions, even though, in reality, they constitute the first serious threat to free speech in American history.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions because most people who support bad causes, and even many who commit evil, believe they are motivated by good intentions.
Their thinking goes like this: I mean well, therefore I do good. Therefore I am good. And if you oppose me, you do not mean well, and cannot be good.
So, given that good intentions are so often morally worthless, what are we to do if we wish to increase goodness in society? Or, to pose the question another way, if good intentions pave the road to a terrible world, with what should we pave the road to a beautiful world?
The answer is wisdom, understanding as much about life as possible, especially the consequences of any position you hold. Wisdom is asking what does good, not what is well intentioned.
Good intentions-and even being a nice person-without wisdom leads to evil.

Every other country puts THEIR people first. As they should. You get rid of the statues, rename the schools and take charge of education, then educate the people to all be obedient sheep in servitude to the elite. Anyone that grew up before internet, computers, social media can see the change in the way people think. It's blatantly obvious. Just as calculators enabled people to never learn the skills to do math, the introduction of tech has enabled people to never learn how to think critically or problem solve. And worse yet, to stifle the speech of half the population, demonize them, then guide the rest into whatever Utopian vision the self proclaimed moral and intellectual superior have in mind. Don't worry tho. I'm sure they have everyone's best interest in mind when they say "you'll own nothing and be happy".

The bigger problem that I see is that many of these people, especially the vocal activists, are more concerned with how they look to others. They don't want to look wrong or foolish - even though, as you said, they *are* foolish - and more often than not wish for some form of positive reinforcement for their actions. It's as if what they're really saying is: "Am I not a good person for demanding that this happen? And it MUST happen now to show how good and right I am! PRAISE ME, PRAISE ME!"

Exactly 💯. Honestly, the problem with people who believe that doing what is honestly evil is "good" is that they do not really care about the consequences of their own actions based on choices they make. The fundamental truth of proverbs: the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but ignorant fools despise wisdom and discipline (Proverbs 1:7). One can acquire wisdom throughout their life, but they must seek it (2:1-5) and seek it in the right places. One truly acquires wisdom and is wise when that person realizes that the Almighty God of the Bible is the source of wisdom and is the one that gives it to others (2:6). God has given us wisdom and He has shown us the way to escape from hell. He has given us not only instruction and wisdom in the Bible, but also His very Son, Jesus Christ, who Himself is “the wisdom of God” (1 Cor. 1:24) and is “wisdom from God” (1 Cor. 1:30). One cannot have a proper understanding of God’s wisdom without realizing that all wisdom is found in Jesus alone! Yet the wisdom of God is beyond any mortal man that claims to be wise. This is why God, in His unsearchable ways (Rom. 11:33), has made Himself known in the crucified and resurrected Jesus who’s suffering was spoken of hundreds of years ago before He walked the earth. This is why it is written “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” (1 Cor. 1:27)

I'm a bit torn with this one. There are a lot of hate and rage filled people out there that beleive they are so "right" that would cause serious harm to those who disagree with them. These people who allow hate and rage to dictate their actions are not good by any definition.

Personal offense leads to anger and unresolved anger becomes a root of bitterness. When we chew on the root of bitterness we become more angry and feel more like "they" are to blame for my anger. This leads to rage. When we feel we are "right", often we think that our point of view is the most compassionate and healthy therefore we "intend" to move others to live accordingly.

The first lesson in wisdom is learning that man (and therefore society) is not perfectible. Most of the harm that is committed by well-intentioned people is caused by the failure to grasp this simple fact.

• The road to a good world is paved with wisdom, not good-intention. Many people in socialist country had a good intention when they supported the rise of tyrants. • The criteria for wisdom - It do good, not just mean good. • You need to learn biology to become a biologist, likewise- to possess wisdom, we must learn it just like any other traits. Wisdom is to be taught just like any other ideas and concepts. There's a great deal of chance that you'll be wise if you are taught wisdom

A few things. 1.) This highlights the difference between being genuinely good vs. being "nice." The two actually are not one in the same, although they are conflated as such. Good and evil are objective values, whereas nice is subjective, and only based on what are considered conventional norms. 2.) The world leaders that buy in to all this nonsense know what they are doing. They are evil. And is because of lack of wisdom, people fall for it. They don't understand how evil works. They tend to think that it only appeals to your more hedonistic desires, but in actuality, it preys on your desire to be loved most. Which is where the wanting to be "good" really comes from with most people, and why they are lead astray. 3.) There is a difference between having morals, and being a moralist. It is the moralists who think they have superior virtue, and can therefore act anyway they want, because they are, as AOC once put it, "Morally correct." These are the kinds of people who cause events like the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem Witch trials. These are the people who give morality a bad name, even turned the word itself in to a curse word. These are the kids of people who do the most virtue signaling, and virtue signaling is for those who lack virtue. 4.) A good illustration of the "road to Hell being paved with good intentions" is a book called The Ominous Parallels, by Dr. Leonard Piekoff, who was Ayn Rand's successor. He makes the case that what eventually lead Germany to Nazism was the philosophy of Kantian "ethics", which teaches the inverted morality of Altruism. Which, BTW, I would go so far as to argue that altruism is the root of all evil, not money or even the love of money.

Good intentions must be accompanied by acts of our will in order to accomplish what we planned. Laziness, procrastination, and fear can all play a part in keeping our intentions only that. People-pleasers are especially prone to finding that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. By nature, people-pleasers want to say whatever will grant them favor with whomever they wish to please. They may have every intention of calling next week, going to lunch, or babysitting for a friend, but after the moment has passed, they forget all about what was promised. They find that their road to untrustworthiness, disappointment, and misunderstanding is paved with their good intentions. God takes seriously the words that come from our lips. In fact, Jesus said that we will give an account for every idle word spoken (Matthew 12:36-37). We should not be quick to express our intentions if we don’t have a plan to follow through and the ability to do so. Instead, we should determine in our hearts what God wants us to do and then commit ourselves to it (Psalm 37:5; 119:11). One way we can be sure that our lives are not cluttered with useless intentions is to consider ourselves “crucified with Christ,” as Paul did (Galatians 2:20). When we recognize every morning that our day is not ours to squander as we please, but belongs to the Lord, we will be more prone to follow through on the direction He gives us. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, but the road to heaven is paved with obedient faith. Good intentions make us feel like we’re on the right track, but they lack any power to get us where we want to go. However, a willful commitment to follow the Lord takes us where He wants us to go.

Okay so a fee things I agree with his premise here, as Good intentions without wisdom is dangerous when evil men would take advantage. But even as a Christian I don't believe the Bible I'm itself is the most important source of wisdom as wisdom in and of itself takes many shapes and forms. Wisdom is worldliness Wisdom is humbleness Wisdom is knowing when and when not to pass judgment A child has better wisdom than some adults in these regards
