We all know that there’s more to maturity than simply growing older. So what characteristics do you need to become a mature person? And why will that help you lead a better life? UCLA Medical School psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Marmer explains.

Script:
We all know it takes a long time to grow up - not only biologically, but psychologically. There's a saying among psychiatrists that it takes 50 years to overcome the first 20.
Here's the good news: unlike other species, we are not restrained by our instincts alone. We are able to learn from our parents, our experiences and our culture.
Here's the bad news: Nobody matures without effort. It doesn't happen naturally. It takes a lot of hard work.
But what does it mean to be "mature?" Good question. So, let's answer it.
I have identified five characteristics of maturity. If you work to possess them all, you will have a happier, deeper, and more productive life.
One: Taking Control
Of course, you had no choice what era you were born in, or where you were born, or who your parents are. But with each year of childhood you attain more and more capacity to chart your own course. Yes, society and fate play a role, but cultivating your ability and willingness to make your own decisions, expands your ability to influence how your life unfolds. The only way to achieve maturity is to take charge of your life. Nothing empowers you as much as exercising that control. Refusing to act, waiting to be rescued and seeing yourself as a victim are sure signs of immaturity.
Two: Taking Responsibility.
I mean this in two ways.
The first way is simply to acknowledge that you’re responsible for what you do. If you make a mistake, acknowledge it. Don't alibi and don't blame others. This is an easy thing to say, but we all know it's very hard to do. A mature person does it. A mature person takes responsibility.
Second, is the willingness to take on obligations and fulfill them. For example, I got married and took on obligations to my wife and children. I have ethical obligations to my patients and my profession, even on days that I might not feel like it. A mature person doesn't see obligations as burdens but as something he willingly accepts and sees through to fulfillment.
Three: Containing Emotions.
I would never suggest that you should ignore your emotions, but you have to learn to contain them. Immature people lash out at their boss or their coworker if something doesn't go their way, or argue with their spouse when they come home, or turn to alcohol or drugs because of a rough day.
I often tell my patients that maturity can be measured by how much anxiety they can tolerate without acting out inappropriately against themselves or others. Mature people express their emotions in the right place, at the right time, in the right way. We are emotional beings, but we should never let go of the steering wheel; that is, we need to learn how and when to contain our emotions.
Four: Having Perspective.
An immature teenager will regard a pimple as a catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, or will regard rejection by a girlfriend or boyfriend as the end of the world. Maturity comes from putting disappointments into perspective.
The reason we forgive a teenager's overreaction is because we understand it's probably the first time it's happened. But life's disappointments don't stop when you turn 21. Far from it. Disappointments of every variety, great and small, happen throughout life. The mature person learns from them and gets stronger each time he recovers. This kind of mature thinking is best expressed in the famous advice given to King Solomon: This too shall pass.

@@TheLoscla05 --- I agree . . . lemme put it this way . . . our courts view ALL women as more virtuous than ALL men . . . women aren't stupid, they know this. They know that lying doesn't get you arrested if you are female. And if you are arrested, you ain't gonna get anything but a slap on the wrist from the courts. This is what I meant by a society with ethics challenges. BTW, the same exact thing can be said about people with wealth. You can buy your way out of punishment most of the time. THESE THINGS ARE MAJOR ISSUES that make people cynical and then angry and then eventually, societal collapse.

Sadly what's supposed to be common sense and should be widely known is not anymore. Its come to an era where if you criticise a person for example on their behaviour or actions, and said person happens to be of darker akin color, or a different religion or culture, you're the bad guy for criticising their actions, not them for making a mistake in the first place. It's controversial in the sense that if you're part of a certain group, be it race, religion, culture, ethnicity, even a political standing or ideology, you may not have to take responsibility for your actions. You may not have to answer to any of your mistakes no matter how bad and morally wrong they are.

@@GabrielTobing, sounds like your stuffing down your emotions. Letting logic inform your emotions means looking at the bigger picture and letting go of what you want because it's not logically possible. Think of it this way. Right now I want to by a house. I can't because I don't have the resources. So letting logic inform my emotions looks like this. I can't by it now, so I let go of the idea of buying now and replace with a goal to do so later. I plan to fulfill that goal by setting aside a small amount of my resources on a schedule that will make the goal attainable in a reasonable amount of time. This means that I take the time necessary to save the resources make moderate sacrifices to do so. I plan for setbacks emotional by recognizing the will come and delay my plan and by being willing to stretch out/modify my plan as necessary. Isn’t containing emotions immature? I understand that there’s a place and time for everything, but shouldn’t people be able to stand up for themselves? If you’re in an environment where you’re being mistreated, you owe it to yourself to let others know you have rights, you cannot allow people to think they can mess with you just for the sake of being “in control of your emotions”. A mature thing to do would be to voice your issues.

Really think about how both terms are used. When someone says, "it's your responsibility!" - it is always in response to you not holding up your end of a social transaction. Hence, why they have to tug at your emotions to achieve your participation. - It's quite fitting that he used marriage as the example. (I'm watching it for the second time.) There are several issues with this video; one of them is that it takes being mature as an intrinsic good, which I don't agree with. For example, acknowledging your mistakes to other people is good because it promotes better relations with them (and this presumably will make you happier), but not because it contributes to your being an idealized version of a mature person. In general, his focus on "being more mature" or "growing up" is the main problem. He should focus instead on the real benefits or advantages of living your life or behaving in certain ways. If he happened to be my therapist and if he took this same approach in theray as well I'd be very disappointed.

The message about not being a victim really resonated with me. I realized how immature I was being and I'm ready to move forward and take responsibility, and recognize that other people aren't responsible for my situation. I was a hardcore Trump/MAGA follower who used to blame China and immigrants for my problems. I used to think I was the victim of a war on Christmas. In the past I thought that I was the victim of certain books being in my kid's schools. I used to believe that as an American I was the victim of the election being stolen and the president I voted for not being in office. One time I remember hearing Trump say "“We are all victims. Everybody here. All these thousands of people tonight. They’re all victims. Every one of you.” That was the moment I knew I needed to grow up out of the victim mindset and do the hard work to build a little maturity. I'm happy to say that any time I hear Trump say something like "I'm the most persecuted person in history" I can't help but just laugh. Thank god I've finally taken the advice in this video, and grown up.

A psychiatrist, telling someone to CONTAIN their emotions is one of thee worst possible things you could ever advise to any person. That is literally coping 101. You should NEVER do that. MAYBE in a professional setting where you dont have much of a choice, and even then, that is still toxic to your own mental health. As a mature person, you are supposed to CONTROL your emotions, or at the very least, control your actions that follow afterwords, not bottle them up as if they aren't happening. Recognizing that you are feeling a certain way, accepting it, and taking steps to minimize the severity of what might come as a result is what a mature person does. Even if you recognize your emotions but chose to contain them, often warrants for some very dishonest communication skills. They do something to help them relax, they write, they COPE with the problem, they talk about it. They don't ignore them, or bottle them up, or however you would like to put it and then explode as a result. When you are faced with a difficult situation that is centered around gauging your emotions properly when responding to someone or something, containing your emotions can be very dangerous because you are not doing anything to minimize it internally, and thus conditioning yourself to ignore them. This guy is SEVERELY out of touch and needs his licence revoked. Its no wonder he has a 1.9/5 rating. Good lord what a mess.

Instead, I asked them for feedback and I learnt more about what type of person they want and which factors I lacked to discuss. I am slowly figuring out what type of person they want, what they want to hear more of and which companies are more suitable for me. Most importantly, I am learning more about myself and I am not giving up.

Aside from a job, you dont need any other obligation, it doesnt make you mature, it makes you stressed and lacking money, as matter of fact, you will basically live to fulfill them, as far as I know we have just one life, and the least way I wanna spend it is living for others, because if that hold you back, then there is no other way to call it but burdens Expressing emotions is whatever, you can express whenever you want as long as you are willing to accept the consequences.

Life is challenging, yet everyone is born into it regardless. An entitled individual feels that their parents and society owe them for their difficult existence. In contrast, a strong person embraces responsibilities and obligations, viewing life as something they owe to the world, making it better for themselves and others around them. That's maturity. Maturity is strength.

Dear Doctor Stephen Marmer, I appreciate that you are trying to prove a point, I have a few burning questions I wanted to ask. For instance, Have you ever thought how your responsibility statement can be applied to collective events when you said, ”The first way is simply to acknowledge that you’re responsible for what you do.” (Marmer) For example, there was the Great Recession where according to investopedia.com, ”The subprime mortgage crisis was the collective creation of the world's central banks, homeowners, lenders, credit rating agencies, underwriters, and investors.” (Hall) So this brings up an important question who was responsible for the event the lenders, bankers, and investors or the people who were participating in the subprime loan market? Is it both or neither? Another question I have is about your statement about the characteristic of taking control where you stated, ”The only way to achieve maturity is to take charge of your life. Nothing empowers you as much as exercising that control.” (Marmer) How does this idea applies to people who are in the position of political and economic power. Because being a leader of an organization or a country would be considered the ultimate form of taking control, however, there have been individuals in the past and present that acted in ways that would be considered the opposite of maturity. For instance, there was Jeffery Epstein where he was in a position to make decisions due to him being a businessman and having connections with other people in power. However, there have been many times that he acted in ways that should raise eyebrows of many people. For example, according to the Associated Press, ”Under a 2008 non-prosecution agreement, Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges in Florida of solicitation of prostitution involving a minor and another similar prostitution charge. That allowed him to avoid federal prosecution and a possible life sentence, instead serving 13 months in a work-release program. He was required to make payments to victims and register as a sex offender.” (Klepper) I also have a question about your statement about containing emotions when you said, ”Mature people express their emotions in the right place, at the right time, in the right way. We are emotional beings, but we should never let go of the steering wheel; that is, we need to learn how and when to contain our emotions.” (Marmer) What are your views about crying? Because many people view crying as a way of expressing emotions while at the same time it helps contain emotions. For example, according to Medical News Today, the act of crying helps to reduce the person's distress and containing emotions. (Burgess) And finally, can I see your sources? I wish to do further reading and examination of your research. Sincerely, Connor Compton Sources used for research: Klepper, David, and Jim Mustian. “Who was Jeffrey Epstein, and what’s the impact of his death?” apnews.com, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, 11th of August 2019, apnews.com/d4eba0e23c374057bc4a76e9282ffbc8. This feels, ironic because this year when I turned 21 I went through the worst moments of my, I became broken and refused help from anyone. But long story short, I picked up the pieces and built myself a new, as man not just physically but finally, mentally. I speak from harsh experience and those goes out to all the young adults out there; when the time comes for you to grow up and become a man, you will be at the worst state in your life. You will suffer greatly, the most you will ever in your life and you will be broken, stepped over and driven to your absolute emotional and mental peak but if your strong and over come this difficult obstacle you will become a new you, a man. Nothing in life comes with a sacrifice but with every negative comes a positive and vice versa. Be cautious friends, for that will not be the first time your strength will be tested. Stay strong and prevail, things will get better.

The majority of people these days mature somewhere in their 20s or maybe early 30s. A small amount mature early in their teens & a few people NEVER mature. When maturity is reached, appreciation for conservative ideas naturally occurs. People start caring more about family, law and order, appreciation for history & self governance. It is easy to see that maturity is directly linked to political leanings, mature people tend to be more conservative or on the right end of the spectrum and immature people tend to be left leaning. I know this is true because I lived it myself. When I finally matured in my late 20s, I naturally became more conservative, in my early 20s I was a left leaning, bernie supporting democrat that although thought he knew everything, was actually pretty ignorant to history & the entire reality of the democRAT party. If you really want to red pill someone, just help them mature.
